PHG Natural Dye Exploration with Judilee Fitzhugh
Feb 14-15, 2015,10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Multnomah Art Center, 7688 SW Capitol Hwy, Portland, OR
Close your eyes and visualize that beautiful French tapestry you saw in the
museum…or think of the elaborate English court gown in that television mini-series, the
exquisite Japanese kimono with the complicated shibori design, the finely woven East
Indian sari fabric with the pick up design. All of these textiles are dyed with natural
dyes! They are just as beautiful today as they were more than 150 years ago. Explore
natural dyes: both traditional and local variations; plant materials and processed
pigments; bright colors and earth tones; fiber, fabric and yarn.
Sat am: All the basics for silk and wool; cotton variations
Sat pm: Contact prints on fabric; a little bit of science
Sun am: Overdyeing and modifying; multiple colored skeins for weaving or knitting
Sun pm: Some advanced techniques: surface design, prints and resists, discharges
Cost of workshop: $45 - $65, depending on number of participants
Materials fee: $35, payable to instructor
Student supply list:
Rubber gloves
Plastic bags for wet fabrics
Sharp fabric scissors, seam ripper
Personal fibers (a comprehensive kit for sampling will be provided; students have
the option of bringing additional specialty fibers they are interested in: maximum of one
pound, pre-washed)
