Village of Gates Mills
Dear Villagers,
The Farmer’s Almanac has good news for sleigh drivers this winter! A colder than normal
winter with magnificent snowfalls from mid December through Valentine’s Day. It sounds
perfect! Only pristine snow for months as it will be refreshed again and again. Plenty of
opportunities to play Pollyanna’s Glad Game and cast a sunny outlook in the months ahead.
Who isn’t happy to see the Christmas greens, ribbons and twinkling white lights dressing up
our pretty Village? It just might be the most beautiful season here in the valley. The days will
pass quickly as we spend time with our friends, page through the holiday catalogs and bake
favorite cookies and cakes. Before long the Service Department will be stacking the grand
pyramid of logs and kindling behind The Southwick House for the Christmas Eve bonfire.
A giant roaring bonfire is a splendid way to chase the cold on Christmas Eve. The Christmas
Tree Celebration on the Polo Field is a Village tradition. Make plans to come by around 4:00
and gather with your friends and family to share some hot dogs, hot chocolate, and warm
community spirit. How will Santa arrive this year? His invitation reads, “4:30!” and he is sure
to have gifts for our young believers. The Christmas Tree Celebration Committee’s page has
the details along with invitations for new helper elves and a little more jingle.
The Improvement Society is organizing for its annual Christmas Employee Fund, the
traditional way Villagers show appreciation for the excellent, professional services we receive
throughout the year. Village lore has it that the Society began the fund to replace the more
“spirited” expressions of gratitude received by various Village employees. The Society spreads
its own version of cheer by appropriately distributing the fund among police, fire, service and
administrative departmental employees. Our Village is looking very fine indeed, and donations
to the fund are an ideal way to show your appreciation. Look inside for The Improvement
Society’s page. You will be glad to learn that The Gates Mills Improvement Society now has a
tax-exempt status under section 501(c) (3). Your gift is t a x d e d u c t i b l e .
Shopping days are counting down, and while shopping in the Village is limited, shopping
opportunities are close at hand. As the snow drifts grow, be cheered to know that gift cards for
Sara’s Place, Joe Petrella’s Fitness Studio, and services by our advertisers are a phone call
away. Prestige Jewels offers treasures, AMO Upholstery can revamp a favorite chair, and
who isn’t dreaming of a new kitchen from Somrak’s? Our advertisers value your business.
At 6:00 p.m. on December 9th, be sure to stop by Town Hall and say farewell to Terry Vales
and Roger Beuck, our Community Building employees, who are retiring. Before the 6:30 p.m.
Council meeting, there will be a gathering honoring Terry and Roger for their service to the
Village. We are glad for their well deserved free time, but still they will be missed. Roger
retired in October after 18 years of service, and Terry retires December 31st with 40 years.
As the year ends, I am very pleased to have so many villagers contributing to The Pink Sheet.
Thank you, Joe Petrella, Dr. Anna, Susie Thorpe, Advertising Editor Becky Burrington, Pink
Sheet Accounting Manager Patty Serrano, and all our Village officials and organization board
members. Your time and talents are greatly appreciated and enrich our community.
Have a wonderful holiday! The Pink Sheet is happy to return in February.

Village of
Gates Mills
From the Mayor:
Winter does not officially arrive until December 21st this year, but an Arctic blast and several
inches of snow the week of November 10th, brought our plows and salt trucks out of their summer
hibernation earlier than we all would have liked. Thanks to the Service Department for its great
work keeping our roads clear.
As many of you may know, Village Council has directed that a committee of residents be formed to
develop a regional plan for addressing ways to prevent or control further gas wells in the Village
and surrounding areas. A letter regarding the committee appears elsewhere in this Pink Sheet.
Please take a moment to review it.
In our continuing effort to provide timely information about Village activities, we will begin
distributing, via e-mail, the agenda for, and minutes of, Council meetings. If you are interested in
receiving them, please send a note to: [email protected].
At the November Council meeting, I had the pleasure of swearing in our new Police Chief, Gregg
Minichello. Gregg replaces outgoing Chief, Ron Whitmer, who has retired from police duties.
We will miss Ron and his professionalism, but we feel very comfortable with his replacement.
Also at the November meeting, we had a second reading of an ordinance that, if passed, would
require property owners to register rental properties. More information on the proposed
ordinance is available on the Village’s website. While we would prefer not to burden our property
owners with more regulation, it has become clear that the Village’s lack of knowledge about rental
units raises financial, administrative and public safety concerns. If you have additional thoughts
on how best to address these issues, please share them.
One of our residents, James Burrington, was recently recognized by the American Chemical
Society’s Division of Energy and Fuels and awarded the organization’s Distinguished Researcher
Award. Dr. Burrington’s work has been in the discovery, understanding and commercial
application of novel chemical technologies to improve sustainability and reduce environmental
impact in the petroleum additive industry. He will be recognized at the Society’s March meeting,
where a symposium organized in his honor will be held. Congratulations to Dr. Burrington for
this significant honor.
A few closing notes: this year’s Halloween party was a huge success. Special thanks to Joycelyn
Brogley and Doug Webb (and their team) for all their hard work. Speaking of hard work, the
Gates Mills Players continue their string of successes with the now-completed performances of
“Once Upon a Mattress.” Finally, I will provide a State of the Village report in the February Pink
Sheet, with a preview at the January Improvement Society dinner.

GATES MILLS IMPROVEMENT SOCIETY EMPLOYEE CHRISTMAS FUND
For more than 50 years The Gates Mills Improvement Society has been the sponsor of the
"Village Employee Christmas Fund'. It is the traditional way that our village residents provide a
special thank you for the efficient, effective and friendly service provided by our village
employees.
Last year, 382 families chose to join in and make it possible for us to distribute $47,150.00. The
Christmas Fund was distributed pursuant to a formula based on both job position and years of
service. Last year 51 of our full and part time employees in our Police, Service, Fire and
Administrative departments received gifts from the Gates Mills Christmas Fund.
To participate, make your check payable to The Gates Mills Improvement Society, and send it
to us in the envelope provided by December 15th.
Your gift is tax deductible. The Gates Mills Improvement Society now has a tax exempt status

Our board member John Kramer identified the
bell (at left) as belonging to St. Christopher’s-bythe-River Episcopal Church. The photograph of
the painting in The Community House parlor
(below) shows the bell housed in a stone and
wooden structure at the rear of the church
property (look for the arrow). The tale unfolds:
The small book, Gates Mills and a History of its Village Church, describes The Episcopal
Church’s growth in the village. In 1926, The Episcopal Mission decided to seek
possession of the church, built in 1853 on land provided by Hosley Gates, from the
Methodist Church. After finally acquiring title to the building in 1927, the Bishop’s
Committee asked Frank R. (Fritz) Walker, an eminent Cleveland architect and committee
member, to make designs for the church’s remodeling. A chancel and Sunday school
room were added, and repairs were made. In 1934, a well was drilled, drainpipes were
replaced and the furnace was overhauled.
In 1927, Mrs. Sarita Oglebay Burton Russell presented a new chime of 8 bells, made in
Corydon, England, to the church in memory of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Oglebay. The
old church bell (above), “whose ringing had been familiar and welcome throughout the
valley for many years,” was ensconced beside the river in a shrine of hand-hewn logs made
by celebrated stonemason, George Brown. In September of 1947, the bell was donated
to the new Methodist Church on the corner of Wilson Mills and SOM Center Roads.

The May 7, 1934, minutes of the Bishop’s Committee records the congregation’s love of
the building and grounds: “Our little church has great charm because of its simplicity
and purity in design and freshness. It seems to this committee highly important that
constant attention be given to keep it this way.” (p. 66).

SANDRA TURNER, CHAIR JENNIFER DECKER AUDREY DVORAK LARRY FRANKEL EMILY MCCARTNEY JENNI MCMASTER MARY REYNOLDS JODY SAKS MARIE SALIBRA MITZI SEITH JIM STAFFORD G A T E S M I L L S E D U C A T I O N C O M M I T T E E L I A I S O N T O M A Y F I E L D S C H O O L S Important to our committee is maintaining an extraordinary elementary school in
our Village. Excellent teachers, a fantastic principal, eager-to-learn students, and
involved families are helping us achieve this goal. Today we would like to
highlight a family that is new to our elementary school – the Meacham Family.
Liz and Mattuck Meacham moved their family to Gates Mills in June, 2013. Their children are Bennett and Morgan. The family has truly enjoyed their move here from Cleveland Heights. One of the delightful surprises about our Village was the Gates Mills Elementary School. The family was encouraged to look at the school and consider it for their children who are in third and fifth grades. “We loved it the minute we walked in”, says Liz. Principal, teachers and staff know all of the students. The classes are small. The children at the school seemed very happy. Their behavior was very good. Respect for one another was very evident. But it took the family eight months of thoughtful consideration before deciding to move the children from their current private school to Gates Mills Elementary School! You see, Liz is an Assistant Professor at Ursuline College, and knows about instructional design. According to her, the Gates Mills Elementary School is extremely up-‐to-‐date with their instructional methods. Principal Mrs. Tammi Bender oversees cutting-‐edge education at the school. Parents are encouraged to participate in the instruction of their children as volunteers. Recently, Liz volunteered to assist with an integrated science unit that greatly impressed her. “It is exceptional”, says Liz. The entire family is so pleased. According to son Bennett in fifth grade, “I wish that we had come to this school sooner”. “The children are happy when they are getting ready to go to school, and they are happy at the end of the day coming home from school. What more can a parent ask for?” asks Liz. The Meacham Family is happy to talk with anybody about the school. Just ask them. Interviewed by Sandra Turner and Jody Saks

Gates Mills School is proud to announce that two Gates Mills families celebrated their children as Students of the Month at Mayfield Middle School. Both families attributed Gates Mills School as being the foundation for their successes today. We are so proud of them and are proud that they will always be a part of the Gates Mills School family. Congratulations! Abby Coffin's parents told us: "Abby is doing wonderfully at Mayfield Middle School, excelling both academically and socially! Each of you at Gates Mills Elementary helped nurture, challenge and encourage Abby to be the best student she can be. Thank you!" Jack Hansen's parents told us: "Jack is thriving in 6th grade due to the solid academic foundation that was formed at Gates Mills School. YOUR HOLIDAY SURVIVAL GUIDE
It's here - whether you're ready or not. Just look at
the seasonal shelves in your favorite store.
Retailers like to call it ‘holiday season' but let's be
more accurate.
Weight Gain Season begins now, and runs straight
through New Year's Day.
The next two months will bring ample opportunity for
you to expand your waistline. Of course the choice
is yours.
Why discuss it now and not mid way through
December? Because now is your opportunity to
plan for the weeks ahead. Once the craziness
begins, you'll be too busy to put a plan into action.
So let's take this moment of clarity, this calm before
the storm, to outline a two-part plan that will save
your waist from unwanted holiday inches.
Part One: Your Exercise Plan.
Exercise is the first thing people cut when they get
busy, and the holiday season is notorious for empty
gyms. This year, do something different: obligate
yourself to exercise. Promising to yourself won't do
it; you need to promise to others so that you won't
drop the ball.
ü Sign up to work with a fitness expert - This is
the perfect solution for consistent, challenging
and effective workouts. I'll give you the attention
and assistance that you need to power through
the holidays in better shape than ever - talk
about motivating!
ü Join a class - You won't be as effective
exercising on your own during the busy holiday
season, so join a class for accountability. Find
something challenging that gets your heart rate
elevated and uses strength training.
ü Get a serious exercise buddy - Some friends
can be an awesome help while others end up
pulling you down. When looking for an exercise
buddy consider the following questions:
- Do they share your fitness goals?
- Are they fairly encouraging?
- Do they give up easily?
- Are they at your fitness level?
Part Two: Your Diet Plan.
The holidays offer ample opportunities to indulge,
so you need to hammer down some guidelines
before hitting that buffet line. I'm not saying that you
shouldn't indulge in any seasonal treats, but use
moderation. Don't use the holidays as an excuse to
eat until the point of being uncomfortable - will you
really miss that bloated feeling? Decide which treats
to cut out this year.
Don't bring edible treats to the office or to parties.
You know that the leftovers will come home and
you'll end up eating far more than your share. Do
everyone a favor by not gifting fattening treats.
When faced with a buffet line, load your plate first
with greens, vegetables and lean meats before
breads and heavier foods. Also drink water with
your meal and keep alcoholic beverages to a 2drink maximum.
Beware of holiday drinks - most are brimming with
calories. Hot drinks from coffee shops, cocktails at
parties and creamy eggnog are all very enjoyable,
and all filled with empty calories. Stick with hot tea
or unsweetened coffee.
Everywhere you go during the holiday season
brings you face-to-face with a plate of sweets. To
avoid being a bore but without adding inches to your
waist, try the one treat rule. Each time you're in a
social situation that involves sweets, just eat one,
and enjoy your treat slowly.
You don't have to gain weight this holiday season.
The key is your mindset. If you approach the
holidays with the mindset of, “I deserve to indulge
and I shouldn't have to exercise,” then you'll enter
2015 a few pounds heavier, a little less healthy, and
with lower energy than ever before.
I believe that you deserve better. I believe that you
should enter 2015 in better shape than you are
today, healthier than you've been in a long time, and
with more energy than you thought possible.
I'm here to help - call or email set up a fitness
consultation with me. I'd love to show you how to
transform your body over the weeks to come.

KEEPING FAMILY PETS SAFE DURING THE HOLIDAYS
-LESSONS LEARNED SERIES
BY
DR. ANNA
If your family is like mine, then you’ve encountered some challenges with
family pets over the holidays. These life lessons can help with almost any
kind of pet that roams the house.
As a veterinarian, I learn about a dizzying array of decorations, plants, or
foods often displayed during the holidays that can cause harm to your
pet if eaten. The harm caused can range from simply irritating (causing a
pet to vomit) to poisonous (causing serious symptoms that can lead to
death).
Most kinds of trees, plants, and flowers did not work well in our house,
regardless of the time of year, because our cats liked to nibble on the leaves (even pine needles from a
fresh cut tree taken inside for the holidays) or petals. We avoided having those plants known to be
poisonous. However, they ate the nonpoisonous plants or flowers we had, which caused an upset
stomach (not pleasant for the cats), and we’d have to clean up the vomit (not pleasant for us) and
contend with ruined flooring, carpets and rugs.
Our Swedish traditions of decorating and wrapping presents also posed another problem. Decorating a
tree with tinsel is a no-no since tinsel strands (or any string or ribbon on a gift) can get caught
underneath a cat’s tongue, causing a most uncomfortable intestinal situation leading to a very painful
death if not identified in time or an expensive surgery. We do without ribbons for gifts we wrap and whisk
away any ribbons, plastic bags, and wrapping when we receive gifts.
The solution to holiday foods is that my family does not feed our cats human food any time of year. We
know to keep dangerous foods like chocolate and grapes away from them, along with other troublesome
holiday goodies.
Our final solution for the above holiday problems was to designate a room where cats are not allowed to
roam. In this room, trees, plants, and flowers of any kind are welcomed at any time of the year. Any
decorations are allowed. Guests who are allergic to cats can stay in that room without experiencing
annoying sniffles or runny eyes. Finally, whenever guests come over, we make sure the cats are located
in a room where they are safe (most cats fear strangers), and have food, water, and a litter pan available
to them.
Do you have holiday nightmare stories where pets are concerned? Do you have suggestions that worked
for you and your family? To share your stories, contact us at [email protected].
Thanks for reading and may your Holidays be safe for the whole family,
