GRAND KNIGHT—CONTINUED
Looking toward the future the Sweetheart Dance committee is already working on that always well attended event. This
year the Sweetheart Dance falls on Valentines Day and we hope to have photographs available to those Sweetheart couples who would like a souvenir of the evening. (5”x7” just $10.00).
The council is looking into a trip to the Knights of Columbus museum on Saturday, January 31st. The museum is featuring twenty-four Creches with various Nativity scenes for the Christmas season. As part of their permanent exhibit there
is the cross that stood on top of St Peter’s Basilica for over four hundred years, the Christopher Columbus and Father
Michael J.McGivney Galleries, the Wall of History beginning in 1882 when the Knights of Columbus was founded to
the present and much more. We are also planning on going out to eat at one of the local restaurants after the museum.
Anyone interested should call Kevin Godek at (413) 534-3485. We need to have a count as soon as possible so we can
charter a bus and other arrangements.
The First and Second Degrees that were scheduled for March have been moved up to Monday,
February 23rd and Tuesday, February 24th. On Sunday, March 15th we will be having a Third
Degree. These dates are very important because on Saturday, April 11th, Fairview Council will
be hosting the Exemplification of the Fourth Degree. On average, the Fourth Degree is only
held at our Council every five years, so now is the opportune time to become a member of our
Fourth Degree Assembly 2670.

PRAYER INTENTIONS
Please remember to keep in your prayers all of the Brother Knights and members of their families that have passed away,
those who are sick and elderly, for all Priests and religious vocations, for the life of the unborn, and remember to keep
the men and women serving in our military safe, so they may return home to their loved ones.
We ask that you pray for the repose of the souls of , Brother Knight Michael Sears who leaves behind his wife Helene,
and Brother Knight Jimmy Shepard who leaves behind his parents Reid and Brenda.
Fr. Frank Lawlor, Council Chaplain
SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
My Brother Knights and Families, this year your Knights of Columbus Council 4044 will be awarding College Scholarships to student relatives of current or deceased Council 4044 members.
These scholarships are made available through your continued support of and dedication to Council 4044 activities and
functions.
Applications for the 2015 Council 4044 Scholarship Program will be available in the Members Lounge beginning on
January 2nd 2015 and after that date on the Council’s website http://www.kofc4044.com/.
Remember to carefully read and follow all instructions in the application package. In the past many applicants failed
to provide their transcripts or other pertinent information, which caused delays in the completion of the review
process.
Please contact me at (413) 532-3342 with any questions.

CHAPLAIN
I would like to kick off the New Year with a challenge to all of my brother Knights. For 2015 I would like to see all of
you focus your attention on St. John Paul’s call for a New Evangelization!
In December of 1990, Saint John Paul issued an encyclical entitled”Redemptoris Missio” (The Mission of the Redeemer). In it he emphasized the fact that each of the gospels relates a story of Jesus giving a "missionary mandate" to
the Apostles: "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations….” In the encyclical the Pope affirmed that the Church continues on this mission and that as members of the
Church we all share in the responsibility for its success.
While historically, “mission territory” has been thought of as places far away, John Paul laments the fact that there are
“entire groups of the baptized who are all around us and have lost a living sense of the faith and live a lives far removed
from Christ and his Gospel.” He tells us that in these cases, “what is needed is a ‘new evangelization’ or a ‘reevangelization."
I am certain the each member of this council knows someone like this; people who have “lost a living sense of the faith”
and who live lives far removed from Christ. The last five Popes have all echoed the call for all of us to act. Pope John
Paul II and his successors have called upon each of us to become true missionaries to our neighbors, friends and families.
As members of this great organization, as Catholic gentlemen we must begin to do what we can to bring people back to
the gospel.
As we begin this process let’s keep a few things in mind.
1. Evangelization must begin with Prayer. Pray for those who have drifted away and for the strength to help them.
2. Evangelization requires an attitude of peace and good-will. Condemnation will get you nowhere. Judgment and lectures have no place.
3. Evangelization is best accomplished with simple basic kindness and example. Remember the words of St. Francis;
“Preach the Gospel often, if necessary use words”.
During 2015 you (yes, I mean you!) can become a missionary. You can make a huge contribution to the spiritual life of
your neighbor, your sister or your son by bringing them back to Jesus. Let’s begin with prayer.
God Bless You, Happy New Year
Fr. Frank Lawlor, Council Chaplain
VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH
Congratulations Mike, Carole, and David Dubuc for being chosen as January’s Volunteers of the Month. They are one of
our many families that volunteer for Bingo every week. Mike and David work in the kitchen while Carole sells specials
for two hours before Bingo starts. They also volunteer every Thanksgiving, serving those less fortunate. Finally, Mike
and Carole volunteer at the Soldiers’ Home with the Fourth Degree.

BINGO MEETING
There is a Bingo meeting scheduled for Friday, January 2nd at 7:00 pm. Prior to the meeting from 6—7:00 pm we will
be gathering in the lounge to wish everyone a Happy New Year. There will be something to eat and we will have a cash
bar. The Honor Guard rehearsal has been moved to Friday, January 9th.
We will review how we did last year and I will ask a few volunteers to speak, including the Grand Knight. I am looking
for suggestions regarding areas that need improving. Along with your suggestion I would like to hear how you would
handle the situation. I have some new ideas that I will be addressing. I want this to be constructive as we only have two
or three years before there is a casino in Springfield.
