NOTES AND NUMBERS FOR WEEK ONE
AT A GLANCE
MAKE IT SEVEN
It’s time to turn the page. After finishing a spectacular 2014 season with an NCAA
Championship--the first in program history--the No. 2 Oklahoma women’s gymnastics team
will open the 2015 campaign on Friday night against No. 13 Arkansas. The Sooners are a
perfect 6-0 in home openers under head coach K.J. Kindler, and boast a 10-1 mark all-time
against the Razorbacks.

READY, SET, RELOAD
The Sooners enter this season losing six routines from the 2014 squad, but are ready to reload with a stellar class of five
freshmen. Primed for its debut on Friday, Oklahoma’s freshman class was ranked the No. 2 group in the country by College
Gym Fans in the preseason and is expected to contribute on all four events. Major contributors will include former U.S. Senior
National Team member Brenna Dowell and J.O. vault champion Ali Jackson, while previous junior international elite Stefani
Catour and level 10 standouts Natalie Brown and Samantha Craus will provide crucial depth across the board.
NO BREAKS
The Oklahoma coaching staff has lined up a slate in 2015 that will challenge the Sooners from week one. Ranked as the thirdtoughest schedule in the country by RoadtoNationals.com, OU is set to face three of the nation’s top four finishing teams from
the 2014 season (Alabama, Florida, LSU). Oklahoma will also prep for the postseason with two neutral-site podium meets in
the Metroplex Challenge and the Perfect 10 Challenge. The Sooners are one of three 2014 Super Six teams to own a top-10
ranking for strength of schedule.
SENIOR STARS
The Sooners will be boosted this season by leadership on and off the competition floor from seniors Erica Brewer, Rebecca
Clark and Haley Sorensen. The trio have aided Oklahoma to three NCAA appearances, an NCAA title (2014) and an NCAA
runner-up finish (2013) during their careers. Brewer and Clark also own a total of five All-America honors, while Sorensen is
poised for a big senior campaign after a strong outing on beam in the preseason.
QUICK HITS
• OU’s No. 2 ranking in the NACGC Preseason Coaches’ Poll is the program’s highest-ever preseason ranking.
• Oklahoma returns six previous NCAA All-Americans who own 11 total accolades: Erica Brewer (UB, BB, AA), Chayse Capps (BB), Rebecca
Clark (UB), Maile’ana Kanewa (V, FX), Kara Lovan (FX) and Haley Scaman (V, FX).
• Junior Haley Scaman enters this season as the only Sooner in program history to post multiple 10.0s in a career and 10.0s on multiple
events. Scaman owns two perfect scores on floor and one on vault--all achieved in 2014. Scaman earned 20 event title crowns last season.
• The Sooners will host both the 2014 Big 12 Championships and an NCAA Regional contest in Norman this season.
• All three of OU’s regular season matches as well as the conference championship and regional contests will be televised live by Sooner
Sports TV.
• Head coach K.J. Kindler enters the season within striking distance of her 300th career win with 273 total victories.
VAULT
EVENT TO WATCH
Oklahoma returns five gymnasts from last season’s standout vault lineup and is poised for an even stronger
outing in 2015. The Sooners posted four of the top five team scores in program history in 2014, including a
49.700 at the NCAA Minneapolis Regional that stands as the best mark on any event in the OU record books. OU will welcome back vaulting
All-Americans Maile’ana Kanewa and Haley Scaman, both of whom finished in the top four nationally on the event last season. The Sooners
will also pick up powerful options in Brenna Dowell and Ali Jackson, as well as solid depth from Stefani Catour.

The Oklahoma Sooners achieved an ultimate team goal in 2014,
but complacency will not be an issue in 2015. Locked in and ready
to go beyond, OU will utilize a core of experience and dynamic
newcomers to aim for the podium again this season.
VAULT
True freshmen Brenna Dowell and Ali Jackson will enter the vault
lineup and contribute immediately, performing the most difficult
vaults in the squad in a Yurchenko 1.5. Consistent and stellar last
season, Haley Scaman will again ground the squad in the last
position with her dynamic vault that can drop on a dime. Chayse
Capps and vault All-American Maile’ana Kanewa are also capable of
outperforming anyone in the field.
OU will also count on contributions from Keeley Kmieciak, Hunter
Price and Kara Lovan throughout the year.

“Vault has received the biggest upgrade for our team in 2015,”
head coach K.J. Kindler said. “This lineup has power, amplitude
and difficulty on this event and should be amongst the best in the
country.”
UNEVEN BARS
The Sooners strongest weapons on bars are expected to be Dowell
and sophomore McKenzie Wofford. Wofford swings with ease and
displays incredible dismount height, while Dowell will also wow
with the height on her releases. Veteran Rebecca Clark will be the
priceless starter with a short and sweet routine. Senior uneven bars
All-American Brewer, Scaman and Kmieciak can also all hit the
mark at 9.9-plus for the Sooners and bring a true “stick factor” on
their dismounts.
Other gymnasts vying for spots in the lineup will include Lovan,
Jackson and Stefani Catour.
“A slew of other athletes are stepping up to add depth and choices
to our team,” Kindler said. “In total, we have thirteen 10.0-valued
routines to choose from.”
BALANCE BEAM
Oklahoma will boast a plethora of options on beam for the 2015
season. Staples will include Kmieciak, Lovan, Clark, Brewer and
Capps, all of whom have high-pressure experience under their belts.
Senior Haley Sorensen will have a huge opportunity for a potential
lead-off position after a strong offseason, while Kmieciak brings
steadiness from two seasons of starting experience. Clark and Lovan
are the likely core of the lineup and provide “WOW” moments with
their strong execution. Bringing up the rear will be All-Americans
Brewer and Capps; Brewer brings incredible confidence and
difficulty, while Capps is smooth and focused.
Fans can also expect to see Natalie Brown, Kanewa, Scaman and
Wofford as options capable of breakout seasons on the event.
“We lost incredibly steady options from last season,” Kindler said. “I
feel we are up to the challenge to replace these routines. Our team
has developed a love for competing beam.”
FLOOR EXERCISE
The losses of Lara Albright and Spears will be felt this season, but
Dowell and Jackson will provide excellent options with unique
tumbling, strong leaps and exciting dance. Brewer will serve as
a dynamic starter with an energetic routine, and Scaman will
likely take on the anchor role again with her incredible double
layout and a new blues musical selection. Crowd darlings and
incredible talents Kanewa and Capps will also impress with wholepackage presentation, while Lovan will bring clean tumbling and
entertaining dance to the floor.
Other gymnasts who are capable of contributing include Catour,
Brown and Jones.
“Similar to beam, floor will provide opportunities for newcomers
to explode onto the scene,” Kindler said. “We will have styles that
range from swing to hip hop.”
