Senior Update – Week of December 15

Senior Update – Week
th
of December 15
• Massachusetts College of Art and
Design
- A reminder that for those students applying to the
college, in a major that RIC,URI,and/or CCRI does not have, they
should apply under the New England Regional Program (Apple
Program). This program applies to any majors Rhode Island public
colleges do not offer. If anyone needs help with figuring this out, please
let Miss Hoyt know. The Apple Program very often helps students
attend out of state colleges in New England for reduced tuition.
• Problems With e-mails from
Colleges
– When we are contacting colleges when students feel
they have not yet heard from those they applied to (for example: for
setting up a portal, etc.), MANY of these colleges indicate they have
confirmation that e-mails HAVE BEEN sent to the student by the
college admissions office. Seniors need to be very careful in
monitoring their own e-mails. Colleges do not really like
1
it when we have to call to ask for information that they
have already sent out. We (and the admissions counselors) do not
know if students are deleting the e-mails because they feel they are not
important, if the information is going into the student’s spam, if parents
have opened the e-mails, etc. As previously mentioned, portals are
extremely important for checking on the status of one’s application,
notification of financial aid information, acceptances, etc. Please speak
with Miss Hoyt if you need help in setting up the portals/understanding
about checking e-mails.
• The Recommenders on the
Common Application
– Some seniors have been
experiencing confusion related to the Recommenders Section within the
My Colleges Section of the common application. When you look at that
section and see a teacher’s name, it could say: not started (which means
the person has not done anything yet in terms of putting it on the
common app), started (which means the person began the letter), or
submitted (which means the person has written and downloaded the
letter). We also began to see: Downloaded and did not know what this
means. The answer we received back form the common application is as
follows: “ The “download” message means the school has printed tour
application/supplement and it is under review. The “Submitted” status
means that forms have been submitted but the school has not yet viewed
them”. Please see Miss Hoyt if you have any questions on this… also, if
2
it still says, “Not started” and we have already submitted your
application, please let Miss Hoyt know and she will speak with the
individuals about submitting.

• SAT Scores
– A reminder that if seniors took ACTs and/or
SAT Is in November and the scores were good, they need to be sure and
let Miss Hoyt know (as she has not yet received the scores) – she can
either send them in once received to schools that don’t require them
from the College Board/ACT Board – or, students can send them in
themselves. If anyone needs help with this, let Miss Hoyt know.
