Bacterial Meningitis is a potentially deadly disease that can progress
extremely fast. It is an inflammation of the membranes that surround the
brain and spinal cord. The bacteria that cause meningitis can also infect the
blood. This disease strikes about 3,000 Americans annually, including 100125 on college campuses, leading to 5-15 deaths among college students
every year. Consequences include: death (in 18-24 hours), permanent brain
damage, coma, hearing loss and blindness, patches on skin, vomiting, light
sensitivity, stiff neck, confusion and sleepiness, nausea, lethargy, seizures.
Symptoms include: high fever, sever headache, rash or purple patches on
skin, vomiting, light sensitivity, stiff neck, confusion and sleepiness, nausea,
lethargy, seizures. The more symptoms, the higher the risk; seek attention
immediately.
Diagnosis is made by a medical provider and is usually based on a
combination of clinical symptoms and laboratory results from spinal fluid and
blood tests. Early diagnosis and treatment can greatly improve the likelihood
of recovery.
Transmission occurs when people exchange saliva (such as by kissing,
or by sharing drinking containers, utensils, cigarettes, toothbrushes, etc.) or
come in contact with respiratory or throat secretions.
Antibiotic treatment, if received early, can save lives and chances of
recovery are increased. Vaccinations are available and are required for
college students under 22 years of age.
Vaccinations are effective, but do not protect against all types of meningitis.
Vaccinations take 10 days to become effective, with protection lasting five
years. The cost of vaccine varies - check with a health care provider. The
vaccination is very safe with minor side effects.

Legacy Act” removes certain residency restrictions and
permits eligible veterans to assign their unused hours to
their children. Applications are available in the Enrollment
Services Center. First time Hazlewood applicants must
apply at least two weeks prior to the payment deadline.
If application is not approved by the payment deadline,
the student must make arrangements to pay from
personal funds. The student will be reimbursed for the
payment made, if approved for Hazlewood Benefits by
the semester’s census date. Previous ACC Hazlewood
recipients may apply until the end of late registration.
Applications received after the deadline will be
processed for the subsequent semester. Additional

Tuition for Repeated Courses
Enactment by the Legislature of the State of Texas: Amendment to the Texas Education Code - An additional charge
equal to the current out-of-district rate per credit hour will
be charged for any college level course taken at Alvin Community College for the third time. This includes courses with
grades of W and R. See catalog for excluded courses.
Tuition for Developmental Courses Over 27 Hours
When 27 hours of developmental education courses at
Alvin Community College are exceeded, students will be
additionally charged the current out-of-district rate per credit
hour. This includes courses with grades of W and R.
10
Excessive Hours - Additional Charges
TEC 54.068: Students who have attempted 45 or more
credit hours beyond the amount required for their (baccalaureate) degree at Texas public colleges or universities
may be charged additional tuition, up to the level of out-ofstate tuition. This includes all credit hours in which a student was registered as of the official census date for the
semester (i.e. repeated courses, failed courses, and courses from which the student withdrew after the census date);
this does not include credit hours for which the student paid
out-of-state tuition, courses designated as developmental,
any hours removed from admission consideration under
Academic Fresh Start, or hours accumulated toward a previous baccalaureate degree. Students who entered higher
education for the first time prior to fall 1999 while classified
for tuition purposes as a Texas resident, are exempt. Students enrolling in Fall 2006 or later may pay a higher tuition
rate if they have attempted 30 or more credit hours beyond
the amount required for their degree. (Developmental and
technical courses which are not part of the baccalaureate
degree plan do not count toward the excess hours.)
Six Drop Limit - Number of Course Withdrawals
Course Drop Limit Provisions-TEC 51.907 - Texas Education
Code
All first-year students enrolled in the fall of 2007 or after
at any Texas public college or university are limited to six
course drops during their academic career. Students may
not drop more than six courses regardless of how many
institutions attended, how many courses taken or how
many years attended. This policy does not apply to courses
dropped prior to census date, complete withdrawals from
all courses for the semester, courses taken while attending high school, developmental courses, drops from private
or out-of-state institutions, and courses dropped during the
Three Week Mini term. Drops beyond the maximum of six
will be allowed for students who can show good cause for
dropping more, including severe illness, active duty military
service, or work obligations beyond the student’s control.
Students who feel they have good cause for an exception
should discuss their reasons with a counselor or advisor.
Exceptions are granted by the Academic and Technical
Deans. Students are encouraged to discuss options with
their professors and advisors and to make use of campus
resources before deciding to drop a course. Once the six
course drop limit has been reached grades are assigned.
Drops included in the limit will be recorded on the student
transcript.
$1,000 Rebate
Senate Bill 1907 provides a $1000 tuition rebate to students
who complete their baccalaureate degree while attempting
no more than three credits beyond degree requirements.

DISTANCE EDUCATION - ONLINE and HYBRID
Taking distance education classes is an option for students
who don’t have time to attend classes, work irregular hours,
or have other time commitments.
Internet (IN)
An Internet (IN) class is conducted almost, if not entirely,
online. Some instructors may require that students come to
campus for orientations, field trips, or to take tests in an
approved testing location. Students must have access to the
Internet, as all classes are conducted through MyBlackboard.
Hybrid (HY)
Hybrid courses combine online learning and face-to-face
instruction in a manner that reduces the number of face-toface classroom meetings. Students attend a portion of the
class in the traditional classroom at regularly scheduled times
and complete the remaining portion of the class online using
MyBlackboard.
TBA - To Be Arranged
Students registered for TBA classes are responsible for
contacting the course instructor during the first five days of
the term. Students should check their class schedule for the
name of the assigned instructor. If a name is not provided,
contact the department chair. Course instructors may be
reached by using the first initial of the first name followed
by the last [email protected]; e.g. John Smith-jsmith@
alvincollege.edu.
How do you register for Distance Education courses?
It is best to register early to ensure that the course will be
available. Additional fees for Hybrid (HY) and Internet (IN)
classes will be charged at the rate listed under Tuition and
Fees.
Receive a Degree Online
The Distance Education Department offers several degrees
and certificates that can be earned completely online. Choose
from the following:
•Associate of Arts (A.A.) - Sociology
•Associate of Arts (A.A.) - Psychology

to take the Online Readiness Course (ORNT 0100). This
is a no cost self-paced course that should be successfully
completed by the 7th class day. The average completion time
for this course is one hour. This course is designed to break
down the technological barriers and other issues that prevent
student success in the online learning environment. Students
are required to take this course one time.
Students who are registering for an online section of any
course must register for ORNT 0100 first before registering for
any online course.
