It is an inflammation of the membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord. The bacteria that cause meningitis can also infect the blood. This disease strikes about 3,000 Americans annually, including 100125 on college campuses, leading to 5-15 deaths among college students every year. Consequences include: death (in 18-24 hours), permanent brain damage, coma, hearing loss and blindness, patches on skin, vomiting, light sensitivity, stiff neck, confusion and sleepiness, nausea, lethargy, seizures. Symptoms include: high fever, sever headache, rash or purple patches on skin, vomiting, light sensitivity, stiff neck, confusion and sleepiness, nausea, lethargy, seizures. The more symptoms, the higher the risk; seek attention immediately. Diagnosis is made by a medical provider and is usually based on a combination of clinical symptoms and laboratory results from spinal fluid and blood tests. Early diagnosis and treatment can greatly improve the likelihood of recovery. Transmission occurs when people exchange saliva (such as by kissing, or by sharing drinking containers, utensils, cigarettes, toothbrushes, etc.) or come in contact with respiratory or throat secretions. Antibiotic treatment, if received early, can save lives and chances of recovery are increased. Vaccinations are available and are required for college students under 22 years of age. Vaccinations are effective, but do not protect against all types of meningitis. Vaccinations take 10 days to become effective, with protection lasting five years. The cost of vaccine varies - check with a health care provider. The vaccination is very safe with minor side effects. This includes courses with grades of W and R. See catalog for excluded courses. This includes courses with grades of W and R. 10 Excessive Hours - Additional Charges TEC 54.068: Students who have attempted 45 or more credit hours beyond the amount required for their (baccalaureate) degree at Texas public colleges or universities may be charged additional tuition, up to the level of out-ofstate tuition. This includes all credit hours in which a student was registered as of the official census date for the semester (i.e. repeated courses, failed courses, and courses from which the student withdrew after the census date); this does not include credit hours for which the student paid out-of-state tuition, courses designated as developmental, any hours removed from admission consideration under Academic Fresh Start, or hours accumulated toward a previous baccalaureate degree. Students who entered higher education for the first time prior to fall 1999 while classified for tuition purposes as a Texas resident, are exempt. Students enrolling in Fall 2006 or later may pay a higher tuition rate if they have attempted 30 or more credit hours beyond the amount required for their degree. (Developmental and technical courses which are not part of the baccalaureate degree plan do not count toward the excess hours.) Six Drop Limit - Number of Course Withdrawals Course Drop Limit Provisions-TEC 51.907 - Texas Education Code All first-year students enrolled in the fall of 2007 or after at any Texas public college or university are limited to six course drops during their academic career. Students may not drop more than six courses regardless of how many institutions attended, how many courses taken or how many years attended. This policy does not apply to courses dropped prior to census date, complete withdrawals from all courses for the semester, courses taken while attending high school, developmental courses, drops from private or out-of-state institutions, and courses dropped during the Three Week Mini term. Drops beyond the maximum of six will be allowed for students who can show good cause for dropping more, including severe illness, active duty military service, or work obligations beyond the student’s control. Students who feel they have good cause for an exception should discuss their reasons with a counselor or advisor. Exceptions are granted by the Academic and Technical Deans. Students are encouraged to discuss options with their professors and advisors and to make use of campus resources before deciding to drop a course. Once the six course drop limit has been reached grades are assigned. Drops included in the limit will be recorded on the student transcript. $1,000 Rebate Senate Bill 1907 provides a $1000 tuition rebate to students who complete their baccalaureate degree while attempting no more than three credits beyond degree requirements.
