APA Announces Retirement of Marilyn Leland
Launches National Search to Identify New Executive Director
Electric industry executive Marilyn Leland recently announced her upcoming retirement to the
Alaska Power Association (APA) Board of Directors and the ARECA Insurance Exchange (AIE)
Board of Trustees.
Leland has headed the statewide electric utility trade association and its affiliated
organization, ARECA Insurance Exchange, since May 2006. “During her tenure at APA, Leland
established herself as a highly respected leader of the Alaska electric industry and was a key
player during the development of the 2008 Alaska Energy Plan legislation,” said Ben Frantz,
APA Board President. “Her in-depth knowledge of Alaska, extensive experience in association
management, and sound leadership of our insurance company have been invaluable assets.
She leaves big shoes to fill and she will be greatly missed by our membership.”
Leland will remain on staff through August 1 and will assist in the transition process and help
manage APA operations during this period.
“For the past eight years,” said Leland, “I have had the privilege of representing the electric
utility industry and supporting the work of APA member utilities. It has been a tremendous
pleasure to serve APA as part of the dedicated team of staff, volunteers, and leaders – many of
whom I consider friends.”
APA and AIE have established a selection committee and retained the services of the National
Rural Electric Cooperative Association’s Executive Search Department to conduct a nationwide
search. Individuals interested in the APA Executive Director position should direct inquiries to
Ken Holmes, NRECA Executive Search, at 785-201-2148 or [email protected].
Prior to joining APA, Leland was Deputy Director of the Prince William Sound Regional Citizens
Advisory Council and was one of its original founding directors, following the Exxon Valdez Oil
Spill in March 1989.

62-year-old statewide trade association for urban and rural electric utilities. It provides advocacy and
program services to member utilities. APA member utilities supply power to Alaskans in
communities from Barrow to Unalaska, though the Interior and Southcentral regions, and down the
Inside Passage.
ARECA Insurance Exchange, APA’s sister organization, provides multi-line coverage to Alaska nonprofit electric and telephone utilities. AIE is an Alaska-based reciprocal insurance company that holds
an A.M. Best rating of A-, the highest achievable rating for a company its size.
