Italian company ‘F.lli Scapin’ proudly presents his own brand new set of portable actuation devices,
specifically conceived and designed to replace manual work of water sector operators, allowing to
perform easy and fast opening/closing of water valves, penstocks and sluice gates.
Portable actuators catalogue includes a battery-operated unit APB45N and two Honda engine-operated
models APS100N and APS140N. These devices, made with light alloys coupled with last generation
engines and components, represent the ultimate tool for operating in water regulation, irrigation and flow
control.

Easy to use: they don’t require any physical effort by operators;

APB45N portable battery-operated model
Basic model APB45N is a modern portable battery-operated system that, coupled to manual operation
units, makes it possible to handle small-size hydraulic valves and penstocks without any physical effort
from operators.
It’s particularly recommended for emergency operations when no electrical power is available, on
electrified multi-revolution actuation systems, especially on Drehmo actuators. This model can be used
for a long period, thanks to the long-lasting 36V DeWalt battery it is equipped with.

This tool uses a DeWalt case for his ergonomic design and in order to easily equip DeWalt Li-ion 36V
battery (placed under the main handle).
Despite its exterior look, APB45N is not a simple ‘commercial screwer’. Case is DeWalt made, but all
remaining internal components have been specifically created and tested for moving valves and
penstocks.
APB device has been set not to exceed 45Nm, in order to prevent damages to actuator and gearbox
reducer. Reduction ratio of reducer’s casing, coupled with power produced by electric engine (located
externally under the left handle) allows the transfer of movement rotation from APB to a valve/penstock.
Of course, before operating with this tool, you must connect the adjustable anti-rotation pin (in front of
the device) to the anti-rotation flange on reducer’s shaft, and fix it using the safety split.
APB45N has been equipped also with a very useful gear reversal with two directions (L/R): this allows
to quickly move on Left or Right. Last part shown in photos is spindle, where the operator has to mount
the proper bushing in order to connect APB to output shaft.
This battery device is provided along with its plastic case; on request, it can be equipped also with a
custom light kit, that allows to easily work during night time or in absence of light.

APS100N portable engine operated model
APS100N model allows to quickly and safely handle medium-size penstock and hydraulic valves.
With a weight of approx. 12 kg and a modern engine Honda GX25 4T, this model can be used in either
horizontal or vertical position and guarantees really impressive performances. It’s the ideal tool for all
water-treatment sector operators.

APS140N portable engine operated model
APS140N is the top model that can handle, even under heavy conditions, average and large size
penstocks and hydraulic valves. With a max torque of 147 Nm achieved via Honda GX35 4T, this
actuation system is the ultimate solution for all valves, sluice gates and penstocks that cannot be
electrically powered, and therefore represents a true alternative to electric actuation systems.

APS INTERNAL COMPONENTS
This photo shows the various parts of APS actuators:
Internal components of both devices are the same. In fact, 100N and 140N models are based on same
structure; the only difference is on model of petrol engine installed.
For powering this tool, ‘F.lli Scapin’ chose to use HONDA engines, which are considered as the most
powerful and reliable motors available in world market.
GX25 and GX35 are 4T engines, both equipped with a 0,7lt. tank. With this solution, an operator has no
need to make mixture, avoiding the risk of causing environmental pollution. At the same time, recharging
GX with a portable 5 Lt. fuel tank, you get the chance to operate with APS for several hours of
uninterrupted work.
Honda GX is connected to an inner clutch that not exceeds Nm torque limit, in order to prevent
damages to the actuator and to the valve/penstock.
Reducer’s casing is the core of APS units. It has been created using ergal, a very light but resistant
aluminum alloy. It contains a bevel gear pair, made of hardened steel and precision-machined in order to
minimize tool vibrations while in operation.
At the same time, inner bevel gear is in oil bath; this solution allows APS device to work on both high and
low temperatures, with no overheat.

In order to fulfill with EU safety legislation, main handle is equipped with switch on/off and an
accelerator composed by two buttons. They must be pressed at same time to start the rotation
movement of portable actuator.
Both APS units have been provided with a gear reversal at three positions (L/R/neutral).
Side grip can be mounted on left and right side of main handle: this allows APS devices to be easily
used by both left-handed and right-handed operators.
Similarly to APB45N, even APS tools are completed by adjustable anti-rotation pin, security safety
split, and spindle.
On request, APS units are provided on its metallic box. Also, they can be equipped with a custom light
kit that allows to easily work during night time or in absence of light. In case of need, APS night kit is
removable from actuators and it can be worn on the front of operator using its custom elastic headband.

Accessories and usage of APB/APS Devices
With the aim to guarantee a whole service to their customers, ‘F.lli Scapin’ offers a full set of accessories
to work with portable actuators.
These articles are all show in our website. They are both standard and custom made in order to match
each client’s request, allowing to solve all problems related to portable actuators installation and usage.

Connecting the tool and operating
In order to transfer the rotational motion produced by an APB/APS unit to a reducer’s shaft, you have to
install a bushing (photo 1) on actuator’s spindle by fixing it with four screws.
Considering the fact that our portable actuators produce a relevant force, an anti-rotation flange (photo
2) has to be mounted on valve/penstock reducer in order to prevent APB/APS ‘snatch’ rotation and avoid
injuries to operators. Anti-rotation system is completed by anti-rotation pin and safety spin, that allow to
keep the actuator fixed while operating.
This safety mechanism is compulsory by EU security law. ‘F.lli Scapin’ is not responsible for damages to
people or things that will result from non-using anti-rotation system.
Once you have installed proper bushing (on device chuck) and A-R flange (on gearbox reducer), all you
have to do is to connect bushing to output shaft, insert A-R pin into A-R flange, close A-R pin using its
safety split, and then you’re ready to operate. Photo 3 shows this connection phase.
This procedure is the same as working on valves or on penstocks/sluice gates.

About Nm torque of actuators
Output torque of APB/APS devices is adjustable by finger pressure on accelerator button. The more you
push the accelerator, more Nm is produced by portable actuator.
If you keep the button fully pushed, APB/APS units operate all time at its continuous torque.
If the tool encounters resistance while operating, it increases the torque until it reaches the maximum
Nm value, then it simply shuts down.
Similarly to Nm, even output speed is adjustable by simply increasing or decreasing finger pressure on
accelerator button.
Adaptors for operating on more valves (and penstocks)
If a customer needs to move more valves (or penstocks) with several types of shaft, ‘F.lli Scapin’ has
developed a full set of adaptors for simplify operations.
Let’s make this example. You need to operate on four gearbox reducers, each one with a different output
shaft diameter: Ø18, Ø25, Ø38 and Ø30. Instead of carry a full set of bushings and mount/dismantle the
proper bushing every time, the easiest way is to install a standard adaptor (photo 4) on every output
shaft. This solution allows to have a square section 24x24 on every gearbox reducer to operate with.
‘F.lli Scapin’ catalogue is furnished with adaptors of the most common sizes and measures. In addition,
for solving particular cases, our factory can easily create a specific adaptor, by simply knowing the
diameter of existing shaft to be standardized.
Following our previous example, once adaptors are mounted on shafts and Q24x24 bushing has been
installed on actuator, you can quickly operate with and APS/APB tool on all four shafts without continuos
bushings changes (photo 5).

However, along with installation of adaptors the existing hand-wheel is no longer usable. To solve this
inconvenience, ‘F.lli Scapin’ created a Q24 hand crank and a locking system, very useful if customer
needs to safely lock gearbox reducers (photo 6). A Q24 hand-wheel is also available on demand.
An easier situation occurs if you only have to handle several gearbox, all with same output shaft. In this
case, you simply install the proper bushing on APS/APB tool and then you are ready to operate. For
example, working on more output shafts Ø25 requires a cylindrical bushing Ø25. Similarly, if you have to
move only Q20x20 shafts, you only need to mount a Q20x20 bushing and then you can operate, with no
need to install adaptors or change hand-wheels.

Emergency operations on Electric Actuators
Emergency operations are valves/penstocks movements performed on electric actuators in lack of
electricity. ‘F.lli Scapin’ created custom kits especially designed for operating through emergency handwheel of AUMA/BIFFI/DREHMO electric actuators. All kits are designed for usage with Q24 adaptor.
Operations on Drehmo actuators are possible only using APB45N, because 45Nm is the maximum
power that can be applied on these devices.
AUMA and BIFFI units can stand powers up to 150Nm. For these two brands APS tools are more
suitable.
