Assisted Living Residences (ALR)
An Assisted Living Residence (ALR) is an adult home or enriched housing program that has additionally
been licensed by the NYS Department of Health as an ALR. The facility is required to provide housing,
twenty-four hour on-site monitoring, personal care services and/or home care services in a home-like
setting. Daily food service, case management services, and an individualized service plan are also
provided. ALRs may offer each resident their own room, a small apartment, or a shared space with a
suitable roommate. Residents also share common areas, such as the dining room or living room. Most
are on a private pay basis - typically $2000 - $4000/mo. Some of the newer long term care insurance
policies include an assisted living benefit or will cover home or personal care services provided by a
home health care agency.
