(Prayer to the Goddess who slayed the demon Mahishasura)
Each verse begins by saying, “Victory and victory to you, oh darling daughter of the mountain,”
and ends with “who has captivating braided hair, is the daughter of a mountain, and is the slayer of
Mahishasura”, and the rest consists of descriptive phrases extolling the qualities of Durga and her
ferocious battle against the forces of negativity. These range from descriptions of her physical
beauty, eg:
who shines likes the hot sun, who attracts the attention of Lord Shiva by the twinkling sound made
by her anklets while she is engaged in dancing, who is sweeter than honey, has a glittering mien,
who enjoys to smile, who shines likes the hot sun, etc,
and of her goddess-like nature, eg:
who makes the whole earth happy, who rejoices with this universe, who showers boons on devas,
punishes those who are undisciplined, enjoys being happy, looks after the three worlds, removes the
effect of sins, who has the strength which never diminishes to gain victory over enemies in the
battle field, who forgives and gives refuge to the heroic soldiers of the enemy rank whose wives
come seeking refuge for them, etc,
and of her placement within the firmament of deities, eg:
who is the daughter of Nanda, who resides on the peak of Vindhyas, who plays with Lord Vishnu,
who is the consort of the lord with the blue neck, (Shiva), who made Pramatha, the attendant of
Lord Shiva, known for his tricky strategy, as her assistant, etc,
to her bloodthirsty ferocity in overcoming demons, eg:
who breaks the heads of ogres into hundreds of pieces, severs the heads of the generals of the
enemy with her own arms, who is the blood red creeper emanating from the seeds of blood which
fell in the battle field, who decks herself with ornaments on her throbbing limbs in the field of battle
when she gets her bow ready to fight, etc.
