There were some scheduling problems here due to the fact we had a reduced amount of tables
available as we only had 50 per cent of our usual facility. Our organising team did their best and
must be congratulated on their efforts to resolve the situation.
MENS ROUND-UP
The O/40 men’s singles event saw last years’ champion L.T. retain his title with a 3-1 victory in
the final against Tom Haddley. Tom who was runner-up at Sunderland reached the final with wins
over Ken Stonebridge, John Stone, Costas Papantoniou (in future to be known as CP!), Stephen
Horsfield and Dave Robson in the semi-final. Whilst L.T had victories over Steve Eades, Dave
Griffith, Kevin Caldon and Tomasz Rzeszotko in the semi’s.
During the event Ray Dixon’s lad Andrew had a good win over Clive Carthy before losing in five
to No.3 Seed Darren Griffin. David Langham had a good win over Dave Harvey before losing to
Keith Williams.
The O/50 Tournament saw Adrian Pilgrim win his first title in this event with a 3-1 victory in the
final against Nigel Eckersley. Adrian in reaching the final had wins over Terry Parkings, Alan
Whitton, John Payne and Kevin Caldon in the semi’s whilst ECK had victories over Tom Murray,
Ivan Lewis, Steve Horton (3-2 after being 2-0 down) and Dave Harvey in reaching the final. No.1
Seed Keith Williams was beaten in his group match by Alan Cherry who went out in round 2 to
Clive Carthy. Whilst Williams went on to the quarters with wins over Jim Brewster, Davy Bowles,
and Dave Robson before losing to Kevin Caldon -8, 12, -10, 9,-11. Last year’s winner Peter
Bartram after beating Gerry Campbell from Scotland went out to Dave Harvey.
The O/60 saw new boy Brian Johns chalk up his first title with a very close victory in the final
against NO.1. Seed Maurice Newman by -5, -8, 9, 9, and 9. I expect this victory by Brian will be
the first of many in the next few Seasons. To win the event Brian beat Dave Harvey, Derek
Balding, John Williamson and Peter Radford, whilst Maurice had wins over Johnny Fannin, Tony
Needham, Tony Clayton (11-9 in the 5th after being 2-0 down) and Chris Pickard.

The O/70 saw another person retain their title Peter Radford when he beat Tony Brown 3-1 in the
final. With Points Crowley recovering from having a knee replacement and Brian Hill sunning
himself in Spain, Peter took the title with a comfortable wins over Geoff Bax, Johnny Fannin and
Peter Bradley. Tony Brown made it to the final with wins over Dennis Bromage Ron Langheim,
and an 11-9 win in the 5th against Roy Norton in the Semi’s.
It is good to see Syd Montgomery competing in our Tournaments again after a long absence. His
coaching at Ashford T.T.C by Joanne and Paul Drinkhall has yet to influence his results at the
moment but I am sure it will come!
The O/80 final saw the No.1 and No.2 Seeds do battle and this resulted in a 3-1 win for Geoff
Bax against “Old Merv Wood.”
WOMEN’S ROUND-UP
The O/40 event final saw a battle between two South Coast rivals and in the end it was Dorset’s
Sanja Clements who came out on top with a -7, -4, 11, 9, and 8 victory over Sussex’s Rose
Rainton. Sanja in reaching the final beat Christine Williams, Janet Adams and Jane Vickers
whilst Rose had wins over Dawn Sagoo, Sandy Nash and Michelle Reeves.
The O/50 event was won by Jane Vickers (Derbyshire) with a 3-0 victory in the final over Denise
McEvoy. Jane had wins earlier on against Wendy Pryce, Maggie Welsman and Teresa Devaney
(a close one here! -11, -7, 5, 14 and 4). Whilst Denise reached the final with wins over Sheila
King, Penny Perry and Janet Adams who in the previous round had beaten No.1 Seed Jan Johns
3-2.
The O/60 title was last won by Maggie Welsman who last won a title back in Hereford in 2013 but
she put that right with a 3-1 victory in the final against Linda Simpson.
National Champion Teresa Devaney who had won seven out of the last ten O/60 events went out
to Linda Simpson in the semi’s (3-2) after beating Sylvia Tyler whilst Linda beat Lynda Reid and
Sandra Ryder. Maggie’s victories were over Audrey Robinson, Marilyn Bawden and Penny
Perry.
In the O/70’s National Champion Margaret Dignum retained her Midland Title with a 3-1 win in
the final against Sally Bax. To reach the final Sally beat Lynda Reid and Doreen Schofield, whilst
Margaret beat Sylvia Tyler.
