KBRA Meeting Jan. 21/14 - BIC Update 4 What is the Problem? • KB Internet Connections are “Too Small/Too Slow” – – – – Very slow page displays Streaming stops and startsVery slow down and up loads Connections drop out • Capacity Issue – Dirt Road vs. Highway • All Seagrave residents & businesses “Like Trying to Drain a Lake With Straw” KBRA Meeting Jan. 21/14 - BIC Update 5 How do we Measure Performance? • Internet: – Speed of transfer measured as Megabits/second • Most KB/Seagrave actual speeds are – less than 0-3 Mbps (Down) – Morning and evening worst times • Should be getting at a minimum: – Speed = 10 to 15+ Megabits per second (Down) – Needs to be reliable and affordable KBRA Meeting Jan. 21/14 - BIC Update 6 King`s Bay Residents Association So…….KBRA Executive Approved the Creation of a Committee to: • Identify the local Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and their services; • Gather info from KB and Seagrave residents on their internet services, level of satisfaction and interest to improve; and • Work with government & the ISPs to improve internet services - faster, more reliable and affordable. (BIC – DC, Don Biffin; Terry Bird, Lee Whitman and Marty Bailey) KBRA Meeting Jan. 21/14 - BIC Update 7 How Does the Internet Come to Us? • Wireless – Radio, Cellular or Satellite • Wired – Telephone or Cable Lines KBRA Meeting Jan. 21/14 - BIC Update 8 Internet Service Providers Wireless: – Radio modem is outside and looks like “Pizza Box” – Clear Line-of-Sight • • • • • Williams Communications Andrews Wireless Cable Cable Xplornet* Others ??? *Xplornet also offers satellite service – Costs range $50-100+/month, plus….. – Cellular internet available • Bell, Rogers, Telus (and their subs) • Data costs can be expensive KBRA Meeting Jan. 21/14 - BIC Update 9 Internet Service Providers Wired: • Bell Canada in Seagrave – Existing copper telephone lines to the home • This system is at capacity and is limited – Port Perry Bell Office is closest fiber node – Switch in Seagrave needs fiber connection – Bell says they have developed a business case, but no plans to upgrade connection to Seagrave at this time. KBRA Meeting Jan. 21/14 - BIC Update 10 Internet Service Providers Wired: – Cable TV Companies Provide Bundles – Compton/Rogers and Cable Cable Inc. – “Watch+Surf+Talk” – Eastlink is local Cable TV Provider–(Persona 2007) • Coax cable to most homes in KB/Seagrave • Only analogue Cable TV in Seagrave KBRA Meeting Jan. 21/14 - BIC Update 11 Internet Service Providers • Eastlink provides “Watch+Surf+Talk” service bundles nearby in Sunderland and Janetville: • Full digital HD TV with 100+ channels • Internet – 20 Mbps down & 2 Mbps up - unlimited – 40 mbps down & 6 Mbps up available • Phone, with call waiting/display & voicemail. LD extra. • $125.45 month (as per call centre/web site Jan16/14). • Eastlink has confirmed that there are no plans to provide to KB/Seagrave KBRA Meeting Jan. 21/14 - BIC Update 12 Eastlink • Estimated cost of extending fiber to Seagrave and rebuilding local Cable TV system $2.3m • Fiber connection is main issue • Eastlink interested in working with us and can contact: – Ron Mervis, Regional Mgr., Southern Ont. • [email protected] • 519-773-1226 • CKL Economic Development Project - Internet KBRA Meeting Jan. 21/14 - BIC Update 13 Recommendations & Next Steps • Best long term solution for KB and Seagrave is Wired Internet – Bell or Eastlink. • Short Term - Wireless • Committee continue investigating and gathering info. ISPs continually changing services & prices. • Residents can help by contacting Bell and Eastlink • Scugog, Durham & CKL also need to push as well • Further reports in future KBRA Meeting Jan. 21/14 - BIC Update 14
