CONSTABLE TO BILLING OUTLINE

CONSTABLE TO BILLING OUTLINE
(including several Quaker families)
Major revision February 2014.
We have used IGI, Quaker, Cornwall OPC and CFHS records,
plus information from over a dozen wills provided by Cornwall
Archives. There are still question marks and unplaced entries.
Corrections and additional information gratefully received!

A John CONSTABLE is mentioned in documents for the period 1529-32 in connection with a tenement and land called ‘Bake’ in Pelynt,
Cornwall, about 10 miles east of Golant. (C 1 /607/16)
There is another reference re a messuage and land in Eddyns Down; but so far I have not been able to identify this place. (C 1 /650/23)
Is the John CONSTABLE buried at Golant on July 30th 1600 a son of this Pelynt family?
And is this John CONSTABLE, buried in 1600, the father of the Henry and John who both married at Golant around 1567-8?
In the 1569 Cornwall Muster Roll the only two CONSTABLE entries are in Golant: Harry and John, presumably born c. 1540s - both good archers.
Notice that Henry and John both in their turn named their first child John.
And who’s is ‘Amey’ CONSTABLE buried there on April 30th 1596? (Cornwall opc)
Note on the HOCKEN family:
Dorothy and Ann HOCKEN were
daughters of Thomas HOCKEN of
St Breward. Dorothy was chr. there
on Nov. 22nd 1570.
Sister Ann married Reginald BILLING
at St Tudy on Oct. 16th 1592.
In his will of 1643 Reginald BILLING
left 40 shillings to his sister-in-law
Dorithy CONSTABLE.
Loveday HAMBLY the Quaker was
Reginald BILLING’s neice.

Charity BILLING continued in her grandfather Quaker BILLING’s
steps, establishing a Quaker meeting house in Port Isaac in 1806.
It was of course an earlier BILLING, Loveday HAMBLY, who had
been so passionate in the Quaker cause at Tregongeeves from the 1650s.
Indeed, she became known as the Quaker Saint.
