Pastel Workshop at Stony Creek
Working with pastels, we’ll spend a weekend observing a slice of nature in scenic Stony
Creek. This shoreline setting provides a variety of landscape views including water,
marshland, houses, boats, and sky. Students will learn to apply pastel to respond to the
color, light and atmosphere that nature throws our way. In the event of light rain we’ll
seek shelter and work from one of several open gazebos in the area. Some drawing or
painting experience will be helpful but is not a prerequisite to enjoying the class. A full
materials list and meeting location will be sent upon registration. Optional: Sunday session
will be followed by pizza dinner at Stony Creek Market.
Instructor: Lisa Hess Hesselgrave
Lab fee: $5
Saturday & Sunday, 1 - 4pm, Apr 19 - 20
Cost: $72; members: $65
Immersion in Abstraction
Explore the world of abstraction. In this class students will investigate contemporary
abstraction and discover ways to generate and compose their own abstract imagery.
Some approaches will involve collage, expressive narrative, symbolic imagery, and
geometry. The course will cover the basics of color theory, space, value, and composition. All levels welcome; the class will be tailored to individual participants. The only
prerequisite is to come with a curiosity and willingness to experiment. Over the two
days, students will be guided towards the completion of a small series of works, as well
as at least one larger work.
Instructor: Lenny Moskowitz
Lab fee: $5
Saturday & Sunday, 1 - 4pm, Apr 12 - 13
Cost: $72; members: $65
Waxing Wabi-Sabi on the Weekend
In this encaustic workshop, we will take inspiration from Wabi-Sabi, an aesthetic that
embraces the imperfection of processes over which we have no control. With this in
mind, we will begin with observations of our surroundings. Using encaustic, students
will be introduced to texturizing, layering and techniques for creating a patina while
taking advantage of happy accidents that occur with the medium. Some experience
with encaustic is helpful although not required. Specialized materials valued at $35
included. List of additional materials will be sent upon registration.
Instructor: Ruth Sack
Lab fee: $15
Saturday & Sunday, 10am - 4pm, Mar 8 - 9
Cost: $175; members: $161
Encaustic Collograph
This workshop combines encaustic painting with printmaking by creating collagraph
plates using wax to make the printable matrix. Participants will be able to experiment
with inlaying and incising techniques to create texture and build their image on a reuseable Plexi-glass plate which can then be inked with water based inks (Akua intaglio)
and printed on a printing press. The possibilities of using encaustic to create texture
in printmaking are limitless. Combining these two artistic mediums will be an exciting
visual and artistic journey. This workshop is best suited for those with some experience
with encaustic and printmaking with a press, but not required. Specialized materials
valued at $40 included.
Instructor: Binnie Birstein
Lab fee: $15
Saturday & Sunday, 10am - 4pm, Jun 14 - 15

artworks - including painting, sculpture, video and installation - by artists from around
the world. You will be inspired, intellectually invigorated, seduced or possibly confused,
and even a bit disgruntled. No matter, the time goes by swiftly; you will have fun, and
your mind and body will receive the exercise they so need. Bring comfortable shoes.
Students will be notified of meeting location before the event. Please note students will
provide their own transportation.

Plein Air Painting on Nantucket Island
Instructor Lenny Moskowitz has created a warm, encouraging, and artistic environment
in which his students feel encouraged and eager to tap into their creative energies.
Using the Nantucket landscape, the process of creating a painting outdoors will be
simplified through demonstrations and individual guidance. Open to a range of media:
pastels, acrylic, watercolor, collage, or oil paint, students will explore new approaches
to landscape painting. The workshop includes accommodations in a seven-bedroom
house in downtown Nantucket. Come for the full six-nights. Non-student spouses are
welcome for an additional fee. Fee does not include food or transportation to the island.
For questions, please contact Lenny Moskowitz: 203-389-2182 or lennymosk@comcast.
net. To view Lenny’s work, see his website: www.lennymoskowitzart.com. This workshop
is open to all levels. Registration is limited. To register, please call CAW at 203-562-4927

Photography, Life and the Opposites
Successful images are always the result of photographers expressing themselves by
trying to be fair to their subjects. The basis of this workshop is the landmark principle
of Aesthetic Realism stated by its founder Eli Siegel: “All beauty is a making one of opposites, and the making one of opposites is what we are going after in ourselves.” Some
topics covered are: showing the depths of a person through what is seen on the surface;
choosing a background that is different from the main subject but doesn’t fight with it;
feeling at ease photographing strangers on the street. We will also look at questions
about self-expression had by some of the medium’s most important photographers—and
how they are our questions as well. Bring your camera (digital or film) to the first session
along with 3 prints for discussion in a critical and encouraging atmosphere.

Lightroom and RAW Workflow
In this course, students will use Adobe Lightroom to organize, edit, adjust, and output
their photographs. An emphasis will be placed using the RAW capture that most SLR
and Mirrorless digital cameras offer in order to have the most control of the images.
While Lightroom is designed to be a much simpler, intuitive program than Photoshop,
it is very powerful, and students will learn controls ranging from color correction and
black-and-white conversion, to advanced topics such as removing lens distortion. A
camera that shoots in RAW is recommended but not required.
