Aims and objectives

Please read the guidance document Statement of purpose: Guidance for providers.
Aims and objectives
What are your aims and objectives in providing the regulated activities and locations
shown in part 3 of this statement of purpose
Aims and Objectives of the Services:
Within this service the philosophy of care and support that we have embedded into
our health care setting is based on the belief that, by developing a programme of
personalised care and attention for our Young People, this will contribute to their wellbeing and comfort so that they are able to live in the wider community with
appropriate support, guidance and assistance or maintain their optimum level of
functioning.
In order to implement our philosophy of care as indicated above, we have set
ourselves a series of Aims and Objectives that we consistently aim to achieve and
maintain. Only by continually checking our performance against these Aims and
Objectives can we assure the Young People, their carers and ourselves that we are
delivering the appropriate service in an agreed and beneficial way.
We focus on Young Peoples’ Independence:
As an integral part of caring for the health and well-being of Young People, each
Young Person has the right to receive a non-discriminatory service and have an equal
opportunity to attain their maximum level of independence.
Young People’s Personal Choices:
To ensure that Young People are empowered to make informed choices and
decisions and all appropriate information is communicated in a manner that will be in
an accessible format for each Young Person. Additionally, parents and/ or care givers
are kept involved in the decision making process in conjunction with the Young
Person.
Positive Risk Taking:
In order to encourage each Young Person to maintain autonomy and independence
as far as possible, our Young People are empowered to undertake activities and
supported if there is an element of risk involved. Positive risk taking is considered
and an integral part of personal development.
Risk assessment and management is a core activity that is continuously under review,
using a range of strategies. Where concerns are raised regarding the level of risk
involved in a particular activity, the matter is discussed and an agreed course of
100457 1.01 Statement of purpose Part 2

action determined. Staff will involve the Young Person and parents/ carers/ advocate
where appropriate in these discussions to ensure there is a balance between taking
risks and ensuring Young Persons' safety. The hospital employs a range of risk
assessments in order to maintain inclusion whilst safeguarding against risks. The risk
assessments are reviewed regularly as part of the “Active Care” programme.
Individual’s Social Needs:
Our Young People are assessed and a plan of support is devised which may include
skills development and community participation to enable the Young Person to move
into community living where appropriate.
Wherever possible, our Young People are encouraged to attend and, if practicable,
participate in the various activities that take place in the local community. The local
community organisations in turn are encouraged to visit our Young People with
various events, activities, and presentations in conjunction with parents and/ or care
givers.
Respecting and Preserving Dignity:
In providing care to the Young Person there are procedures that need to be carried
out which maybe of necessity but can be sensitive in nature. Care is exercised by all
staff involved in such procedures to preserve the dignity of the Young Person.
Cambian identifies that on occasions there may be a need for a specific gender carer
and the hospital will ensure that it works in line with the wishes of the Young Person
to provide the appropriate carer for that individual. All Young People have access to
their own room and their own private “en suite facility”.
It is the right of each Young Person to exercise their preference for privacy. This is
acknowledged and appropriate measures are implemented by staff to ensure that the
Young Person’s privacy is respected by the Young Person's peers and staff members
alike. However, there may be circumstances where this may not be possible although
staff will make reference to personalised care plans to ensure that individual safety is
maintained at all times. This will include ensuring that hospital observation policies
and procedures are followed throughout each 24 hour period.
Confidentiality of Information:
In the course of providing care and treatment to Young People, confidential and
sensitive information regarding each Young Person is made available, only to the staff
that are involved in the day to day care of the Young Person. Staff members ensure
that appropriate records are kept and used as necessary whilst maintaining
confidentiality of information in accordance with current best practice. No confidential
information will be made available to any person or organisation outside the hospital
unless it is legal and appropriate to do so. All individual information is held in
accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998.
100457 1.01 Statement of purpose Part 2

Cambian Group Hospitals are all committed to the Caldicott principles of information
governance. There is a group Caldicott Guardian, supported by local (hospital)
Caldicott champions– usually the Responsible Clinician that promote safe and
confidential governance of individual confidential data.
Individuals may request access to their records under the Data Protection Act 1998.
Staff are trained in order to support Young People in our care in achieving their
independence, promoting their personal choices and social needs, respecting and
preserving their dignity whilst maintianing confidentiality and empowering Young
People with positive risk taking.

Description of the location
(The premises and the area around them, access, adaptations, equipment, facilities,
suitability for relevant special needs, staffing & qualifications etc)
Cambian Willows is a 12 bedded unit which provides care and treatment for children and
adolescents between the ages of 12 and 18 years who have mental health difficulties. We
are a mixed gender unit and we look after Young People who may be detained under the
Mental Health Act or are of an informal status.
Our aim is to provide assessment and treatment to theYoung People in our care. We
endeavour to create an environment that is empathetic to the needs of children and
adolescents with mental health issues; giving them the opportunity to experience a positive
adolescence. We strive to support and treat Young People during the acute phase of their
Mental Illness and focus on helping them to re-intergrate into their community and continue
with their education. To achieve this we work alongside families, carers, educational facilities
as well as relevant community teams to ensure the best possible outcomes for the Young
Person. We place great emphasis on maintaining existing skills and abilities but also
encourage our Young People to interact socially and spend time in the local community in a
supported way.
Cambian Willows is a service that has been developed from Cambian's success in our
Mental Health, Education and Learning Disabilities services. The combination of our Ofstead
'Outstanding' registration residential education together with our industry-leading Mental
Health Rehabilitation Services is the basis of our approach to the care we provide the
children and adolescents within our hospital.
