NATIONAL CATBOAT CHAMPIONSHIP
NOVEMBER 10 2014
The Camana Bay National Catboat Championship, held on
Remembrance Day, is the culmination of a series of races held
throughout the year. It’s one of the most exciting races of the year.
It’s a great event for competitors as well as spectators who will be
able to enjoy local food and music on the beach.
Catboats were introduced in Cayman in the early 1900s and are an
integral part of the maritime history of the Cayman Islands. The
handcrafted wooden boats were vital to survival in the early days of
Cayman – before modern transportation arrived. These venerable
vessels were used for turtling and fishing as well as a means of
transportation. In their heyday, they were a common sight in the
George Town Harbour and were used to unload cargo from ships and
to distribute supplies and packages to the districts. As times
progressed, however, their numbers dwindled.

RE-BRAND OVERVIEW

CEPTS began in 2008 in a joint effort between the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism and
Department of Environment. Since the project was initiated six years ago, five preliminary tourism
partners achieved Green Globe (GG) certification through the facilitation of the CEPTS programme.

Since their initial certification four of the five properties with an exception of the Little Cayman Beach
Resort have been recertified and continue to improve their carbon footprint as well has set a shining
example as the top “Green” companies in the Cayman Islands. (Little Cayman Beach Resort withdrew
from the programme in 2013 due to limited resources. They were unable to execute GG’s new
criteria.)
Cont..
RE-BRAND OVERVIEW

With efforts to improve participation the CEPTS team have decided to develop a new proposal which
will have CEPTS branded as its own sustainable environmental programme; with its own criteria for
the Cayman Islands while gradually introducing the new companies into the GG certification process.

The CEPTS rebrand aims to;
 Continue to provide support and guidance to those properties interested in becoming (GG)
certified but to provide it at a level that is simple and much easier to attain.
 Facilitate with the increased number of sustainable initiatives on Island while highlighting and
recognising those companies that have already made an attempt to implement minor
environmental initiatives within their businesses.
 Encourage even those companies with minimal resources to be a part of the CEPTS programme.
CERTIFICATION LEVELS
Cont..
Once a company has been audited by a auditor from the Department of Environment (DOE) and their
certification level is determined they will be given a full report. The report will include information on their
current achievements as well as ways they can improve their sustainable initiatives to reach to the next
level of certification. They will be issued a decal with the year of their certification and a gift bag for their
participation.

THE GUARDIAN OF THE REEF
The Guardian of the Reef — a 13-foot bronze sculpture was placed on a sandy flat in 65 feet of water
just off Lighthouse Point. The statue is a mythological creature — half ancient warrior and half
seahorse — is meant to be a beacon of marine conservation and its sinking marked the beginning of a
yearlong celebration of Divetech's 20th anniversary. The Guardian helps focus attention on ocean
conservation and introduce an initiative to raise money for an ocean-conservation programme to
educate schoolchildren in Grand Cayman about our marine resources. The concrete pedestal will
attract underwater life, coral and sponges almost immediately and begin to grow on the base.
