Updates from USAID Trip – April 27-May 5, 2014
Dr. Adolfo Rocha traveled to Peru this spring to provide Ponseti Method training.
Dr. Rocha trained healthcare practitioners at Hospital del Niño in Lima and
Hospital Infantil Alianza Holandesa in Arequipa. The training was provided to enhance
the quality of technical issues such as casting, tenotomies, and bracing. During Dr.
Rocha’s time in Peru, 10 healthcare practitioners received training and 52 patients were
evaluated.
Although local doctors in Arequipa were utilizing surgical procedures in the
past, they seem interested in learning the technique. PIA hopes their hospitals and/or
institutions will facilitate this training for the benefit of their patients. Dr. Rocha took
advantage of the presence of the local doctors to review basic principles, treatment
steps, and tips to use during manipulations and castings.
Dr. Rocha also evaluated progress of the clubfoot project at these hospitals.
It is evident that this is a country with a high percentage of clubfoot cases and a
number of them have associated pathologies/syndromes. PIA will continue to train
doctors and assist the treatment of clubfoot in Peru using the Ponseti Method.
PIA and the Peru team plan to create educational brochures for parents
whose children are receiving care in Peru.

Dr. Gaston Terrazas, PIA visiting faculty (Chile), traveled to Peru to provide
comprehensive clinical training in the use of the Ponseti Method. Seven healthcare
providers from two Lima hospitals, Hospital del Nino INSN-MINSA and San Juan de Dios
Hospital, benefitted from the training.
A visiting professorship consists of on-site mentoring by an experienced provider at a
new clinical unit. The goal is to further refine new practitioner’s skills and to assure
that the Ponseti technique is being correctly applied and that the clubfoot clinic unit is
functioning satisfactorily. Training occurs during clinic hours with mentorship occurring
as patients are being treated during their clinic appointments.
More than forty clubfoot patients were seen throughout the week. Doctors reported
that there are more patients appearing in the clinic each week, and that awareness and
knowledge of treatment availability are spreading!
