Delivering DTH
across Africa
A new dawn
“Now is the time”, said Mthuli Ncube, Chief
Economist and Vice-President of the African
Development Bank, “After ten years of improved
stability, sound macroeconomic policies and
blossoming trade links, growth has made
African nations freer than ever to choose their
own development paths and implement active
policies for economic transformation.”

Africa’s TV revolution
Africa is watching more TV
In the next ten years, Africa will become the shining
light of digital TV. As economies around the world
struggle with the remnants of a recession, a shrinking
audience and a saturated market, African nations
are charging ahead. New markets open up every day,
bringing new opportunities for platform operators
and broadcasters from all over the world.
4 | Africa's TV revolution
Africa’s evolving middle class is demanding better TV. As the continent continues to
rise, broadcasters on the continent and from around the world, are desperate to feed a
market hungry for content. They need digital media content delivered directly to homes
across Africa, reaching new markets, growing their audiences.
Africa is turning to satellite
Over 300 million Africans live many kilometres from the nearest fibre, with many millions
living in non-urban areas, cut off from the bigger cities. Broadcasters are now turning
towards satellite, with its vast coverage and a reach that’s undaunted by mountain,
desert, jungle or savannah.

Reaching new
audiences
Top broadcasters in Africa are already partnering with
SES to grow their audiences in Africa. With 9 satellites
over Africa, and another to launch in 2014, our
satellite capacity brings new opportunities to connect
customers, employees and TV audiences, enabling
operators to deliver thousands of hours of the latest
TV content every day.
6 | Reaching new audiences
With more than 25 years’ experience and a growing
fleet of 55 satellites, SES provides capacity to leading
Pay TV, Free-to-Air and Free-to-View broadcasters.
SES’s 56th satellite, ASTRA 2G, is scheduled for launch
in 2014 and will extend the reach and capacity of
Direct-to-Home (DTH) even further across Africa.

Beyond satellite
capacity
“Connecting more than one billion people in Africa requires
more than providing downlinks and uplinks”
- Ibrahima Guimba-Saidou, SES Senior VP for Africa.
SES is dedicated to the African continent, with local offices and regional knowledge to make sure you
connect with more viewers, no matter where they are. We also hold specialised training programmes
for installers and broadcasters and bigger, knowledge-sharing workshops, designed to build local
expertise in the media and broadcasting industry across the continent.
Working in Africa, for Africa
SES operates three regional offices with local teams in South Africa, Ghana and Ethiopia, as well
as two teleport networks in Ghana and Djibouti. Our network offers in-country knowledge from an
African perspective, bringing hassle-free connectivity to your country. Another sign of our commitment
to growth on the African continent are our one-of-a-kind workshops and training programmes.
10 | Beyond satellite capacity
Empowering your installers
The Elevate training programme was born out of a need to complement satellite and digital
television roll-out on the African continent with quality installations by well-trained installers. This SES
initiative has already held training programmes in South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal, Cameroon,
Ivory Coast, Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, benefitting local business
growth across the digital broadcasting environment in Africa.
Sharing our knowledge
Working closely with African regulators, government agencies, broadcasters and network operators,
our aim is to assist as many countries as possible with a successful digital migration by the
2015 deadline. SES Caravans have visited 14 countries since November 2011 with more than 700
participants. And this is just the beginning.
There’s no denying that Africa’s DTH market is now a serious
global player. With our range of solutions and value added
services, SES will help you realise your DTH vision, one
customer at a time.
