ACT/MME Testing
As of this writing, we have had one of the
toughest winters in memory, as the snow and
Polar Vortex have led to many school
cancellations. Barring gubernatorial and
legislative action, we may have to make up days
or hours to reach our required hours of
instruction. Stay tuned to the District website or
teleparent for updates. In the meantime, bundle
‘em up, and send them to school. We have
much to do.

NWEA Testing
In keeping with MCL380.1249 of the
Michigan Revised School Code, governing
annual performance evaluation for all school
teachers and administrators, a significant
factor for satisfactory performance is the
measurement of “student growth by national,
state, or local assessments and other objective
criteria.” Subsequently, one of the assessment
the Gibraltar School District is using this year
is the Northwest Evaluation Association tests
in Reading and Mathematics, for grades
Kindergarten through eleven. The tests are
administered entirely on computers, measuring
student growth at three times during the school
year. By this time, your student should have
completed the second round of NWEA testing,
which, hopefully, shows growth in their
achievement. An NWEA progress report
will be sent home highlighting their
performance.

Musicians Shine at MSBOA
Like much of January 2014, Saturday the
25th was a cold, snow filled, miserable day.
The kind of day where one is supposed to
stay shut up inside the cabin, stoking the fire
and telling tales of past terrible winters.
However, 54 stalwart students braved the
cold polar conditions and traveled to the
District 12 MSBOA Solo and Ensemble
Festival to represent their school musically
amongst all others.
Fifty Four students divided into 22
ensembles and solos had all practiced on
their own time with their own guidance to
prepare for the festival. The performing
groups included 2 saxophone quartets, a
percussion ensemble, a brass quartet, a
clarinet quartet and numerous solos, duets
and trios. In the end 6 of the 22 groups
earned a 1st division rating which qualifies
them to participate in the State Solo and
Ensemble Festival. Those moving on to
states will be: Jeremiah Hendra – Trumpet
Solo; Rhianna Blaies, Payton Howard –
Flute Duet; Austin Gilliam, Mary Kozmor,
Robby Lawrence, Casy Saenz, Beck
Morningstar, JP Cox, Preston Hayes, Laura
Mitchell, Emily McKinnie, and Jake Snyder
– Percussion Chamber Group; Chris
Demers, Amanda Whitaker, Colin Szajner,
and Hailey Holmgren – Saxophone Quartet;
Sara Engstrom, Megan Vicelli, Amy Miller,
Alex Mills – Clarinet Quartet; and Sean
Miller, Nick Catalanotto, Madison Olender,
and Joellen Saugrich – Brass Quartet.
Congratulations to all who performed and
especially to those progressing onto the state
festival March 22nd. Good luck.
