Product Stewardship Summary RAFFINATE-1 This product stewardship summary is intended to give general information about the chemical or categories of chemicals addressed. It is not intended to provide an in-depth discussion of health and safety information. Additional information is available through the chemical’s applicable Material Safety Data Sheet, which should be consulted before use of the chemical. This product stewardship summary does not supplant or replace required regulatory and/or legal communication documents. A. Chemical Identification Raffinate-1 is produced as a co-product of ethylene manufacture from a steam cracker. The product is extracted from the crude C4 stream in a butadiene extraction plant. The valuable butadiene which may be 40-45% of the stream, what is left is Raffinate-1. It consists of Isobutylene, the two normal isomers, butene-1 and butene-2 and small quantities of butanes and other compounds. Removal of the isobutylene, usually by reaction with Methanol to produce MTBE, leaves Raffinate-2. Raffinate-1 Uses Raffinate-1 is a chemical building block used in the manufacture of methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) and diisobutylene (DIB). MTBE is a liquid added to petroleum to reduce emissions, and DIB is an intermediate in the production of alcohols and solvents end uses include adhesives for the plastics industry, electrical insulating materials, protective coatings, and sealing compounds. C. Health, Safety and Environmental Information Acute exposure results in irritation of the mucous membranes, higher levels can result in neurological effects such as blurred vision, fatigue, headache and vertigo. Exposure to the skin can lead to frostbite. Long-term exposure has been associated with cardiovascular disease, there is a consistent association with leukemia, and weaker association with other cancers. Raffinate-1 is listed as a known carcinogen by the Agency for Toxic Substances Disease Registry and the US EPA. The American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) lists the chemical as a suspected carcinogen. The Natural Resource Defense Council (NRDC) lists some disease clusters that are suspected to be associated with this chemical. Jan 14 Research & Development – PT. Chandra Asri Petrochemical Tbk 2 Product Stewardship Summary D. Storage and Transport Storage of Raffinate-1 as a compressed, liquefied gas carries a specific and unusual hazard. Steel is recommended for tanks and piping in Raffinate-1 service, and it is usually stored under pressure or in insulated tanks at reduced temperature, preferably below 1.6°C. E. Conclusion Raffinate-1 is highly flammable. Acute toxicity is low at typical exposure levels. High levels of exposure for short or long periods can cause eye, nose and throat irritation headaches, and other reversible central nervous system effects ranging from dizziness to unconsciousness. Raffinate-1 should be stored in mild steel or stainless steel. Control measures have been put in place to minimize exposure potentials to workers, public, and the environment. However, prior to use or handling Raffinate-1, make sure to consult the relevant product Material Safety Data Sheet and review applicable regulatory guidelines and requirements, including but not limited to OSHA guidelines, should be consulted prior to the use or handling of Raffinate-1.
