President: Dr. Peter Vickers, Cert Ed., Dip CD., SRN, RSCN, BA, PhD, FHEA Peter Vickers initially trained as a school teacher and taught art and crafts in primary, secondary and special schools, as well as with the British Forces in Germany. In addition he had other jobs, mainly manual, including sausage-making, farming, working in a cemetery and as a postman, before commencing nurse training in York. After qualifying as a nurse, he worked on the paediatric unit in York – where he nursed his first child with a severe immunodeficiency (Schwachman-Diamond Syndrome) in 1983. This means that he has been involved in Immunology and Immunodeficiency for 30 years, because he then moved to Great Ormond Street in London to specialise in Paediatric Immunology and Infectious Diseases. Whilst there he obtained a first degree in molecular biochemistry and genetics and later undertook research into the effects of isolation and hospitalisation on children (and their families) who had been treated for SCID, for which he was awarded his doctorate. This research took place in the UK and Germany, and formed the basis for a published book on SCID and the effects of early isolation and hospitalisation on children - and their families. In addition he has written many chapters on Immunology and Immunodeficiency in various Nursing textbooks, and has also co-authored a book on writing a research proposal for health care professionals. As well as writing, he has presented papers on immunology and immunodeficiency at many conferences in Europe and the UK - and North Africa. Now semi-retired, he occasionally works as a Visiting Senior Lecturer at the University of Hertfordshire, and when not working continues to play his many brass musical instruments – to the delight of his neighbours!
