DUKES OPEN 2014 AGAINST FIRST FBS FOE: Duquesne kicks
off its 88th season of football at the University at Buffalo on Saturday, Aug. 30 at 3:30 p.m.
(ESPN3.com/970 AM ESPN/iHeart Radio). This marks Duquesne’s first game ever against
a Football Subdivision team. The Dukes are just the third Northeast Conference team to play
a FBS team following Central Connecticut State which played Western Michigan in 2007
and Wagner which played Florida Atlantic in 2012 and Syracuse in 2013. The Seahawks are
also scheduled to play Florida International this season. Overall, the Dukes are 50-23-3 in
season openers (records available since 1902, DU fielded its first team in 1891), including a
4-5 mark under 10th-year head coach Jerry Schmitt. The Dukes are 13-8 in season openers
since moving to the FCS level in 1993, with seven losses coming to Bucknell and the eighth
coming on the road to nationally ranked Old Dominion in 2012. Last year, DU finished 7-4
and tied for first in the Northeast Conference with a 4-2 record. Duquesne returns 16 position starters from last year’s team, including nine on defense. This is Duquesne’s seventh
season as a scholarship-granting football program. With the move to the NEC, Duquesne
offered 18 scholarships in February of 2008. That number has increased to 35 this season.
Duquesne granted only need-based financial aid for football playing student-athletes as a
member of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Football League from 1994 through
2007. The NEC competed as a non-scholarship member of the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision until 2006 when the conference adopted an athletics-based aid model. This
is the fifth season the NEC regular season champion will be an automatic qualifier for the
Division I Football Championship.
DUKES AND BULLS: This is just the second meeting between Duquesne and MidAmerican Conference foe Buffalo. UB leads the all-time series, 1-0 after a 49-0 victory at
UB Stadium on Oct. 2, 1991. Alan Bell ran for 266 yards and three touchdowns that day as
the Bulls outgained the Dukes, 589-160. Buffalo rushed for 531 yards on 57 carries.
EARLY START: The August 30 game at Buffalo ties the earliest opener in school
history (2001 vs. VMI & 2003 at Bucknell are the others).
FBS INFLUENCE: Three players with FBS game experience are on the opening
day 2-deep: back-up WR Wayne Capers (Arizona), starting S Chris Johnson (Florida)
and projected starting OLB Armstead Williams (Purdue) have all played in a BCS game.
Back-up CB Ken Egu ran track and was on the football team at Washington, but did not
see action. FB Randy Morris was a two-year walk-on at Pitt, but did not play.
CAPTAINS: Captains for the 2014 season are: junior OL Dan Buchholz (Malvern
Pa./Great Valley), sophomore QB Dillon Buechel (McKees Rocks, Pa./Montour), junior DL Zach Zidian (Youngstown, Ohio/Boardman) and senior DB Rich Piekarski
(Hudson, Ohio/Hudson).
QUICK HITS
• Duquesne, which returns 16 position starters, won three of its last four to tie Sacred Heart for the
regular-season Northeast Conference title. The lone loss, which came at SHU on Nov. 9 (10-0), prevented the Dukes from earning the NEC’s automatic bid to the NCAA Football Championship.
• Twenty-three position returnees started at least once last season.
2014 DUKES TO WATCH
QB • DILLON BUECHEL, So. (6-3, 191)
Put together the top freshman season by a
Duquense quarterback ... set school records
for passes completed (217) and attemped (373)
in throwing for the sixth-highest yardage total in
school history (2,569) ... completed 58.2 percent
of his passes for 14 TDs ... was named second
team All-NEC ... was one 20 players named to
the initial Jerry Rice Award Watch List ... earned
NEC Rookie of the Week three times ... ranked
23rd nationally - and second among freshmen
- in passing yards per game (233.5).
WR • DEVIN RAHMING, Sr. (5-11, 170)
Came into his own as a receiver and return man
last season ... caught 32 passes for 395 yards
and three TDs in nine games ... started the last
five games of the season after missing the first
two with an ankle injury ... all 32 of his catches
came in DU’s last seven games ... accounted
for a team-high 97.3 all-purpose yards per game
... averaged 7.7 yards on 18 punt returns and
28.0 yards on 12 kickoff returns ... his 62-yard
punt return for a score vs. Wagner was DU’s
first punt return for a TD since 1997 ... set
career highs for catches (9) and yards (116) in
amassing 236 all-purpose yards vs. CCSU ...
returned a pair of free kicks following safeties 78
yards to go along with six catches for 86 yards
at Robert Morris.
S • CHRIS JOHNSON, Sr. (5-10, 196)
Second-year transfer from the University of Florida will start at safety for the second consecutive
season ... played in all 26 games, including a
pair of bowl games (Sugar & Gator), in two years
in Gainesville before stepping into the starting
lineup for the Dukes ... had 49 tackles, broke
up five passes and forced two fumbles in nine
games ... was slowed by a late season shoulder
injury that forced him to miss two games.
NT • ZACH ZIDIAN, Jr. (6-1, 325)
Second Team All-NEC pick was the primary
reason linebackers ranked first, second and
fourth on the team in total tackles in 2013 ...
had 44 stops of his own (including 5.5 tackles
for loss and 2.5 sacks) ... showed a nose for the
football with a team- and NEC-high four fumble
recoveries ... enters his junior season with a
streak of 21 consecutive starts.
NOTE
LB • CHRISTIAN KUNTZ,
KUNTZ, Jr. (6-2, 210)
Kuntz, who led the nation in tackles for loss
(1.8/g.) in becoming just the fifth Duquesne
player to be named All-American (Third Team)
by The Sports Network, suffered an off-the-field
knee injury in the spring and is questionable for
the season. Kuntz, the first sophomore in school
history to earn All-American honors from any
affiliate, was the only Duke named First Team
All-NEC in 2013. The two-time NEC Defensive
Player of the Week tied for the team lead with 74
tackles (32 solo) and led the Dukes in tackles for
loss (19.5) and sacks (9.0). He also tied for
team-high with two fumbles forced.
• Twelve freshmen saw action in 2103: QB Dillon Buechel (RS), WR Chavas Rawlins, CB Sterling
Parks, spec teams Xavier Nelson (RS), spec teams Anthony Alimenti (RS), LB Aaron Reed (RS), OL
Larson Graham (RS), PK Austin Crimmins (RS),
PR Bobby Gustine, TE Kevin Enright (RS), DL
Jake Radziukinas (RS) & RB Zach DeNardo (RS).
NORTHEAST CONFERENCE
Buechel, Reed, Graham and Crimmins started
Last four years (2010-13)
every game. All but Parks (transfer) are back.
• In addition, nine first-year players saw action in
2013, with four starting at least once: SS Chris
Johnson, DB Nick Floyd, OL Ezek Suivaaia & LB
Austin Whalen.
• DU, which is 19-11 in NEC play over the past
three seasons (5-3 in 2010, 7-1 in 2011, 3-5 in 2012
& 4-2 in 2013), won a share of the conference title
for the second time in three years in 2013. The
Dukes went 4-11 in their first two seasons in the
conference (2-5 in 2008 and 2-6 in 2009).
• DU has defeated every NEC team - both home
and away - under current head coach Jerry
Schmitt except CCSU. The Dukes, who have
defeated the Blue Devils at home, have yet to win
on CCSU’s Arute Field under Schmitt (0-3). DU
travels to CCSU on Oct. 11.
Duquesne, which has won a share of two of
the past three NEC titles, has won more overall
games and more conference games than any NEC
program over the past four years. DU has also
posted more winning seasons - both overall and
in conference play - than any other NEC program
over the past four years:

OVERALL
• Dillon Buechel completed 58.2 percent of his
passes for a freshman record 2,569 yards and 14
touchdowns (120.37 efficiency rating) in earning
NEC Rookie of the Week honors three times last
season. Buechel was the first freshman to open
the season under center since Scott Knapp in
2005. Buechel replaced Sean Patterson, who
started 33 consecutive games from 2010-12.
• Junior LB Christian Kuntz, who tied for the team
lead in tackles (74) and led the Dukes in TFL (19.5)
and sacks (9.0) in 2013, is questionable for the
2014 season after suffering an off-the-field knee
injury in the spring. Kuntz, a Sports Network
Third Team All-American, ranked 1st nationally in
tackles for loss per game at 1.8. First-year Purdue
transfer Armstead Williams is the frontrunner to
replace Kuntz should Kuntz not be able to play
in 2014.
• 315-pound junior tackle Zach Zidian was a big
reason linebackers ranked first, second and fourth
on the team in total tackles. The Youngstown, Ohio
native - when he wasn’t occupying multiple offensive linemen - had 44 stops of his own (including
5.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks). In addition,
Zidian - a second team All-NEC pick, showed a
nose for the football with a team-high four fumble
recoveries.

• Returning linebackers sophomore Aaron Reed
(74 tackles) and junior Sam Martello (65 tackles) both started all 11 games last season.
• Senior safety Rich Piekarski, who finished third on the team with 70 tackles, led the team with two
interceptions and seven passes broken up.
• Duquesne is 22-17 in non-conference games under head coach Jerry Schmitt with wins over Robert
Morris (three times prior to joining the NEC), Dayton (three times), Bucknell (twice), Fordham (twice)
Albany (once as a CAA member) and Monmouth (as an independent). At home, the Dukes are 14-2
in non-league play. DU plays its most ambitious non-conference game in recent history when it
heads to Buffalo (Mid-American Conference) for the 2014 season opener. It will be DU’s first game
against a BCS school.
ON BUFFALO: Buffalo returns 16 starters from last year’s 8-5 team which made an appearance in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl ... the Bulls finished second in the Mid-American Conference
East with a school record six MAC wins (6-2) ... in a preseason poll, Buffalo was picked to finish
4th of 7 teams in the MAC East Division in 2014.
SEVEN AT HOME: The Dukes will play seven times at home and five times on the road.
The seven home games are the most since 2001 when DU scheduled six home games and later
added the ECAC Classic. It is the first time Duquesne has seven or more scheduled home games
since 1934 (eight).
PRESEASON HONORS
NEC PRESEASON POLL
(Coaches)
BALANCED ATTACK: The Dukes enter the season with 17 seniors (including graduate
students), 23 juniors, 19 sophomores, which includes 14 redshirt sophomores, 11 redshirt freshmen
and 27 true freshmen. The 27 newcomers is Duquesne’s largest class of newbies in the school’s
six-year involvement in the Northeast Conference.
IN NON-CONFERENCE PLAY: Duquesne is 22-17 in non-conference games under
tenth-year head coach Jerry Schmitt with wins over Robert Morris (three times prior to joining the
NEC), Dayton (three times), Bucknell (twice) and Fordham (twice). At home, the Dukes are 14-2
in non-league play, while on the road Schmitt’s Dukes have fashioned a 8-15 mark. DU snapped a
seven-game skid in non-conference road games with a 22-13 win at Dayton on Sept. 3, 2011. The win
snapped Dayton’s FCS-best win streak at 10. DU went 3-2 in non-conference games last season.
