March Epistle
St. John’s Episcopal Church
Keeping a Holy Lent
As Deacon Maggie said in her sermon
on February 16, our spiritual practices
shape our ways of being in the world.
What follows are opportunities to enrich
our spiritual lives during this holy season.
 Join thousands of Anglicans around
the world who say Morning Prayer,
Evening Prayer and Compline (prayers
at the end of the day). Choose this
Lent to say one, two or all three of
these offices each day. Find them in
the prayer book (pp. 37-135) or online
at http://prayer.forwardmovement.org/
 Prayerfully walk the Labyrinth in our
columbarium.
 Attend our mid-week Eucharist
services—Wednesdays at 11:45am.
 Participate in our Lenten Suppers on
Wednesdays at 5:30pm. Supper will
be followed by discussion of Bishop
Curry’s book Crazy Christians. You
don’t have to have read the book to
join us, but the book is great, so
reading it is a good idea anyway.
The evening will end with Compline
and finish no later than 7:30pm.
 Go to ChurchNext online and enroll in
The Big Class: Making Sense of the
Cross with David Lose. This MOOC
begins on March 5 and is free.
 Sign up for daily emails from Lent
Madness (Google it; it’s easy to find).
Modeled on March Madness, this program presents the biographies of two
saints of the church for each day of
Lent. Participants vote online for their
choice each day, finishing up at the end
of Lent with one saint who receives the
coveted Golden Halo. Previous winners
include Mary Magdalene, Frances
Perkins and CS Lewis. There will be
Lent Madness Bracket in the parish hall
so we can keep current.

LENT BEGINS ON ASH WEDNESDAY
MARCH 5, 2014
IMPOSITION OF ASHES AND HOLY
EUCHARIST AT NOON AND 7PM.
Senior Warden’s Corner
Greetings! By the time you read this,
your Vestry will have completed a weekend
retreat to help focus its activities in support
of St. John’s. We now head towards Lent,
with great plans for spring.
There are many opportunities for a little
extra spiritual challenge during Lent. Consider taking on
a new ministry, such as signing up to help with coffee
hour or in the nursery. One might bring items for TAM
or send a cheery note to one of our elders. Take a look at
the Outreach activity of helping with Habitat for
Humanity for those who are able. Come spread a little
mulch as we spruce up the Columbarium grounds on
March 15. We are also contemplating some events to
celebrate St. John’s thirtieth year in its current location,
pretty exciting!
May your Lenten time bring you spiritual renewal.

Crazy Christians: A Call to Follow Jesus
by the Rt. Rev. Michael B. Curry
“What we need are some crazy Christians—Christians
who are crazy enough to catch a glimpse of the crazy,
transforming, transfiguring, life-changing vision of our
Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Christians who are crazy
enough to follow him into the work of helping God to
realize God’s dream for all people and for all
creation” (from Chapter 1).
On five Wednesday evenings in Lent
(March 12, 19, 26; April 2, 9) we’ll
discuss Bishop Curry’s book and what it
means to be a “Crazy Christian” in the
context of our own journeys in faith.
We’ll meet at 5:30pm for soup, begin our discussion at
6:15 and conclude with Compline at 7pm.
Crazy Christians is available on Amazon.com in
paperback and for Kindle. Questions? Please see Deacon
Maggie or Mother Vicki. Contact Barbara in the parish
office to sign up.
Preschool News
The preschool would like to give a special thank you
to several church families for their generous donations to
the preschool. The donations enabled us to put down new
carpet in our multi-purpose room! We also were able to
put money in our Emily Noel Hill Scholarship fund. Your
kind-heartedness is really appreciated!

Preschool registration for 2014-2015 went very
smoothly. We have some openings in our Playgroup, two
year-old classes, three year-old classes and four year-old
classes. Please contact me for more information

Going Deep and Getting Sticky
Our EYC has been following Bishop Curry’s request
to go deeper into our faith. We have been planning a
Taize service for peace by cultivating peace within ourselves using meditation and art, reading passages and
practicing songs to be used in our candle lit service at
7pm on March 1. The EYC has also developed the
prayer stations for the service that will cultivate peace
within ourselves and in our world. We hope you will join
us for this unique worship opportunity.
Spring and summer will bring many opportunities for
our young people to “go deep” into their faith by participating in Diocese events locally and afar. The Spring
Youth Event for middle and high school students will
take place at Haw River on the weekend of April 4-6.
Led by Canon Michael Hunn, students will discuss
issues of faith, self-doubt and peer pressure and learn
communication skills to deal with the issues they face
each day. Middle School students are invited to be a part
of the Province IV Youth Ministries first annual Middle
School Mission Experience in Wilmington, NC from
June 24-28. High School students will have the amazing
opportunity to travel to Philadelphia, PA for the Episcopal Youth Event from July 8-16 where they will join
youth from around the world in worship and fellowship.
They will then do an outreach
mission in the city. The
Diocese also offers many
amazing camps. Please contact
me for more details or check the Diocese website at
www.dionc.org/Youth/youth-main.html
We have been experiencing “Sticky Faith” by working
with so many of the adults in our church family. In
February we felt affirmed and loved by the dozens of you
who shared kind words, gifts and treats in our Affirmagram bags. These messages of love reminded the youth
of the important role they play in our community. We
also worked side by side with adults at the component
build for Habitat for Humanity. More than window and
door frames were built that day. Important connections
between the youth and older members of St. John’s were
made, which will not be soon forgotten. We hope that
you will join us as we serve pancakes and raise funds for
youth programs on Shrove Tuesday, March 4, or maybe
you will join us on March 13 or April 10 as we pack bags
for Backpack Buddies. For the faith of young people to
“stick” they need to feel the support and learn the faith
stories of all members of our church. In fellowship, outreach and worship, we are feeling sticky and going deep.

Grounds and Columbarium Clean Up
Join us for our Spring grounds and columbarium clean up on Saturday March 15, 9am-1pm.
We will clean debris, rake leaves, spread mulch, trim shrubs and trees.
All ages are welcome to help!
