DISSERTATION
“Reverse Knowledge Spillovers and Microfoundations of Endogenous Scientific Change:
Evidence from the Agricultural Biotechnology Industry”
My dissertation provides the first empirical analysis of the underexplored reverse direction of
localized knowledge spillovers between industry and academia: how local industry R&D can
shape the rate and direction of academic research in the regional innovation system. I present an
analytical framework of the endogeneity of academic science, which proposes that academic
researchers are motivated to explore opportunities emerging from the local industry environment
when their incentives align with university’s institutional logic and individual career
considerations. Based on the analytical framework, I test and find support for my argument in the
setting of the agricultural biotechnology industry, examining how academic organizations and
individuals colocated with the agricultural industry incumbents responded to the industry’s foray
into plant biotechnology R&D in the 1980s.
