CNA
Certified Nursing Assistant
As a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), you are
on the front lines of patient care and provide
critical services. This course, approved by
the Maryland Board of Nursing, provides the
training you need to effectively care for people
in a variety of health care settings. You must
successfully complete both Theory and Clinical
sections to receive your certification. Register
for both at the same time. To take the CNA
course, you must: be 18 years or older and have
a high school diploma or GED®, social security
number, complete immunizations (reviewed in
class), and pass a criminal background check.;
pass a basic reading exam before registering.
(Allow two hours to complete the test). Tests
must be completed a week prior to the class
start date; bring a credit or debit card and social
security number to first class. Expect additional
course costs (discussed on the first day of class)
for criminal background pre-check for clinical
placement, immunization and titer tests, Maryland Board of Nursing registry fee, full criminal
background check, and required materials
(stethoscope, uniform, and watch with second
hand). When you complete the CNA course,
you will be well-prepared and eligible to take
the State Geriatric Examination ($95 exam fee)
to become a Geriatric Nursing Assistant (GNA).
A free GNA review class is offered to Mount Airy
College Center CNA students. You may register
after you have been notified that you passed the
reading test. Cost of $1,500 includes fees, books
and CPR certification. .

CPR
CPR: Health Care Provider
Using the American Heart Association guidelines,
this course is designed to teach the skills of CPR for
victims of all ages. Includes ventilation with a barrier
device, bag-valve mask device, oxygen, use of an
automated external defibrillator (AED), and how to
relieve foreign body airway obstruction. Intended for
participants who work in a health care setting and
are required to take a Health Care Provider course for
their employment. Course completion card is issued
for all participants in a Basic Life Support for Health
Care Provider course who successfully complete the
written examination and demonstration.

Medicine Aide Update
Meets the Maryland Board of Nursing renewal
requirements for the Certified Medicine Aide.
Designed to keep the practicing CMA informed
and updated regarding new medications,
non-parenteral drug administration, policies and
practices, and medications needed by geriatric
clients. Emphasis is on new drug therapies and
the role of the medicine aide in providing safe and
competent care. Upon registration, students must
submit a copy of their current CNA/GNA certification, proof of successful completion of their initial
CMA training course in Maryland, and must verify
current CNA practice of at least 16 hours within the
last 2 years, must verify active practice as a CNA/
GNA/CMA in a licensed nursing home for at least 8
hours within the last 2 years, and must verify active
practice as a CMA for 100 hours within the last two
years. Verification can be provided by the employer
on facility letterhead. Please note: The Maryland
Board of Nursing requires that this update must
be completed no more than 90 days before the
expiration of the CNA/GNA/CMA certification.

Oral Radiography
This course uses American Heart Association
guidelines to provide a systematic approach
to dealing with a cardiopulmonary emergency
or sudden death. Includes, but not limited to,
myocardial infarction, respiratory arrest with a
pulse, witnessed VF adult cardiac arrest, airways
management and testing, mega VF:refractory
VF/pulseless VT, pulseless electrical activity, strip
recognition and testing, asystole, bradycardia,
unstable tachycardia-cardioversion, and stable
tachycardia. Money collected for this course
does not represent income for the American
Heart Association. Enrollment deadline is one
week prior to course start date.
Further your dental assisting career and
prepare to sit for the DANB Radiation Health
and Safety exam. This course is approved by
the Maryland State Board of Dental Examiners.
Completion of a two-hour, hands-on clinical
practicum is required. You may complete your
clinical at your place of employment or you
must concurrently register for Oral Radiography
Clinical, which will take place at the Maryland
State Dental Association. A completed Student
Health Profile will be required by the 3rd class
