Actions Taken by Hubbard Feeds in Response to Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea
Virus (PEDV)
As Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus (PEDV) continues to spread amongst swine production
operations across the U.S. and Canada, Hubbard Feeds has taken actions to minimize the risk
that PEDV may be transmitted through our feed products. Due to the dynamic nature of PEDV,
Hubbard Feeds will provide regular informational updates for our customers on the status of
PEDV.
Use of Porcine Protein Products in Hubbard Swine Feeds:
According to North American Spray Dried Blood and Plasma Producers (NASDBPP) properly
sourced, collected and processed porcine blood and porcine blood products are safe and do not
contribute to the spread of PEDV. In a statement issued February 11, 2014, the NASDBPP
described the procedures and standards used in the production of spray dried blood products
and the processing conditions which would be expected to inactivate the virus. The full text of
the NASDBPP statement can be found at http://www.aasv.org/pedv/NASDBPP_PR.pdf
Pork proteins derived as a by-product of heparin (used in human medicine as a blood
coagulant) extraction called peptones also undergo extensive chemical, enzymatic and thermal
processing sufficient to de-activate the virus.
Nutriquest, a provider of a concentrated activated plasma called beta-GRO®, has also
published information regarding the processing and handling procedures of their product. BetaGRO® is tested for PEDV using a PCR test and furthermore undergoes irradiation. To date no
PEDV positive samples of beta-GRO have been found. Further information on Nutriquest
products is available from Hubbard Feeds.
While the existing safety data on porcine proteins indicates minimal risk of PEDV contamination,
Hubbard Feeds is responding to customer concerns by reformulating its existing brands (First
Course®, Lean Start®, Powerstart™ and Show-Rite®) to remove all porcine protein products
except beta-GRO and choice white grease. In addition, porcine meat and bone meal and/or
porcine blood meal will be removed from all swine feeds.
Hubbard Feeds is also creating a new line of swine feeds (designated “NPP”) that will not
contain any porcine proteins or porcine choice white grease. This will allow us to satisfy
customers who currently prefer not to feed any porcine protein products. These new feeds are
named as follows:
 First Course Prestarter NPP
 Lean Start 2 NPP
 Lean Start 3 NPP
 Lean Start 3-650 Premix NPP
 Powerstart 19 13 NPP
 Powerstart 25 16 NPP


Powerstart 25 16 Basemix NPP
Show-Rite Show Pig Starter NPP
Hubbard Feeds will continue to apply science-based principles when evaluating ingredient
information, specifically porcine proteins in regards to PEDV. Swine producers must also
recognize that PEDV is highly transmissible and may contaminate hog barns by many different
vectors; therefore, a highly functional biosecurity program on the farm remains the most
important line of defense against PEDV.
