Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis — EBV is one of the recognized
initiating causes of hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), a
potentially fatal genetic disorder characterized pathologically by
generalized histiocytic proliferation and hemophagocytosis (picture 3)
[23]. Patients with this unusual syndrome present with fever, generalized
lymphadenopathy, hepatosplenomegaly, hepatitis, pancytopenia and
coagulopathy. T cell proliferation is a primary feature of HLH. The
