Thank you! Northeastern District Contest ~ Fall 2014 Page 3 Murray’s Welcome - continued Welcome to the 2014 Fall NED Convention in beautiful Providence, Rhode Island! O n behalf of the members of the Northeastern District Board of Directors, welcome to the Northeastern District 2014 convention. We are very pleased that you are with us this weekend, and we hope that you have a wonderful time. W e are here to celebrate the music, since that is what brings us together. The songs we sing in the barbershop style, making chords ring is what it is all about. So let’s sing songs, tags and have a great time! A s we are enjoying this time together, help me thank Mike Maino and his local committee and Dave Cole and the Events Team for making this a great weekend. I have had some experience behind the scenes, and I know that they do a great job making it look effortless. Yours in harmony, T his Convention marks the start of an important experiment the District is trying in 2015. We are inviting any quartet or chorus that wishes to participate in the 2015 District Convention and Contest to join us without having to qualify in the spring, and to make the event an exciting weekend filled with Gold Medal Moments. The International Quartet Preliminary Contest also will be held in conjunction with the District Convention, instead of in the spring. This will give our quartets additional time to get coaching and to raise funds to attend International the following summer. This is being implemented at this convention for the first time, so we welcome our quartet competitors hoping to qualify for the International Competition in Pittsburgh, PA June 28 to July 5, 2015. W e are eager for chapters and individuals to consider developing activities that would happen during the spring to replace division contests. A festival, a youth event, a woodshedding weekend, a harmony school for your chapter or Division - these are all ideas worth exploring, and the District Board will be looking for ways to assist you to bring your ideas to life. You probably have a better idea just waiting to be brought to life. Let us know what we can do to help make it happen. cont. > Northeastern District Contest ~ Fall 2014 Page 4 Murray Phillips President, Northeastern District Barbershop Harmony Society We are honored to have you with us! STANDING OVATION PROGRAM …designed to assist chapters in developing shows that will be so good that they achieve a Standing Ovation at their conclusion. The reviewer will investigate all aspects of the show, starting with how easy it is to park his car to his arrival at the venue and then all aspects of the show itself, from the opening to the closing curtains. Many things make up the experience of an audience member and that’s what the reviewer wants to find out… how welcome has the chapter made each audience member. The reviewer will try to highlight the many positive things that the chorus did and point out the areas where improvements can be made. Interested in a SOP review? Our home and native land! True patriot love in all thy sons command. With glowing hearts we see thee rise, The True North strong and free! From far and wide, O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. God keep our land glorious and free! O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. O Canada, we stand on guard for thee! THE STAR-SPANGLED BANNER Oh, say! can you see, by the dawn’s early light, What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight, O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming? And the rocket’s red glare, The bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. Oh, say! does that star-spangled banner yet wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
