More red-footed booby birds illegally killed
On 22 January, 2014 a Home Island community member reported another
dump of red-footed booby bird wings and feathers. Remains of red-footed
boobies on Home Island have been found several times this Duldrums
season.
Combined with recent cyclone damage, poaching may have negatively
impacted on the booby bird’s breeding success for 2014. This is a very
disappointing result for Parks Australia and Cocos community.
The red-footed booby is listed as a threatened species and is protected
under the Environment Protection Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC
Act). The red-footed booby population at Pulu Keeling National Park is one
of the few remaining significant breeding populations with the Indian
Ocean.
Under the EPBC Act it is an offence to take, trade, kill, injure, move or
keep any listed species from Pulu Keeling National Park OR anywhere in the
southern atoll unless it is in accordance with a permit under the Act.
Heavy fines can apply.
This illegal activity is still occurring despite the
commitment and efforts of the Cocos community to
protect these birds.

permit (kebenaran) dibawa Akta.
Denda yang berat boleh diberikan.
Perlakuan terlarang ini masih berlaku walaupun
tanggungjawab dan keusahaan masyarakat Cocos untuk
menjaga burung-burung ini.

Thought for the Day

Joke of the Week
It was snowing heavily and
blowing to the point that
visibility was almost zero when
the little Antartian got off work.
She made her way to her car and
wondered how she was going to
make it home. She sat in her car
while it warmed up and thought
about her situation.
She finally remembered her
daddy's advice that if she got
caught in a blizzard; she should
wait for a snowplow to come by
and follow it. That way she
would not get stuck in a
snowdrift.
This made her feel much better
and sure enough in a little while
a snowplow went by and she
started to follow it.
As she follows the snow plow she
was feeling very smug as they
continued and she was not
having any problem with the
blizzard conditions.
After quite sometime had passed
she was somewhat surprised
when the snow plow stopped and
the driver got out and came
back to her car and signaled for
her to roll down her window.
The snowplow driver wanted to
know if she was all right as she
had been following him for a
long time. She said that she was
fine and told him of her daddy's
advice to follow a snowplow
when caught in a blizzard.
The driver replied that it was OK
with him and she could continue
if she wanted but he was done
with the Wal-Mart parking lot
and was going over to K-Mart
next.

General Tips
Change to Fluorescent Bulbs - If
every house in the United States
changed all of the light bulbs in
their house, that would be
equivalent to taking one million
cars off the streets.
Don't Rinse - Skip rinsing your
plates before putting them into
the dishwasher.
Hang Outside to Dry - Get a
cloths line or rack to dry your
cloths.
Turn off computers at night don't just put them to sleep.
Use Both Sides of Paper - double
sided print will save half of the
amount of paper you would have
normally used.
Get rid of baths - You will in
average save about half the
amount of water that you would
if you were taking a bath.
Don't get bottled water - get a
reusable container to carry
water. It is definitely more cost
efficient.
Turn the water off when you
brush - You will save water doing
this alone.
Shorten your shower - The less
time your shower takes, the
lower your impact on the
environment.
Recycle Glass - If you do not
recycle this, it will take a million
years to decompose.
Don't Pre-Heat the Oven - unless
needed, just turn the oven on
after you put the dish in it.
Use Warm or Cold Setting on
Washer - instead of the hot cycle
use the warm or cold setting.
This will save a lot of energy a
year.
Turn off your lights - The
benefits are obvious.
Stop paper bank statements just check it out online.
Buy Rechargeable Batteries Even though it will take a good
investment to buy these you will
find yourself gaining it back in
no time.
Pay your Bills Online - If every
house in the US did this then we
would save 18 million trees
every year.
Get a reusable bag - get yourself
a reusable bag so that you won't
have to worry about carrying
your necessities.
Plant a Tree - It's good for the
air, can keep you cool, and can
increase your property value.
Walk or Ride Your Bike When you
can - If you have to go
somewhere close consider riding
your bike or walking there
instead of your car. It's better on
the environment and healthier.
