Digital TV
services on
Channel 12
Australia has switched to digital-only TV. This means
that analog TV signals have been completely switched
off and television is now broadcast in digital-only.
To watch digital-only TV, your television needs to
be able to receive digital signals. You can choose to
connect a digital set-top box or digital video recorder
to your existing analog television, or use a digital
television, which has an in-built tuner.

Where can I get information about TV services in my area?
You can find out about local TV services, the frequencies they are transmitted on, and the
expected coverage of the transmitter serving your area, simply by entering your address
into mySwitch at the department of Communications website or by calling the Digital Ready
Information Line on 1800 20 10 13.
Why can’t I get all of the channels available in my area clearly?
In some parts of Australia, digital services are
broadcast on Channel 12. This channel was
not used at all for analog services and many
VHF antennas were not designed to receive
this channel.
If you are having trouble picking up services
broadcast on Channel 12, you may need to
replace your current VHF antenna with a new
antenna designed to receive Channel 12. If you
have a combination UHF/VHF antenna, you
may prefer to replace the whole antenna.
While many VHF antennas currently on sale
are designed to receive Channel 12, some
models are still only designed to receive
channels 6 to 11, so you should check that
the antenna will be suitable before purchasing.
You may wish to consider engaging an antenna
technician to check that your antenna is correctly
set up to receive the digital television services
in your area, and to help with any adjustments
that might be needed.
If you live in a property that is rented or
shares an antenna, the landlord or body
corporate is responsible for the antenna
and you should contact them to organise
any necessary adjustments.
What if I still can’t receive adequate reception from a local tower?
If your antenna is correctly set up and you still can’t receive adequate reception from your local
transmitter, you may be eligible to access the government-funded Viewer Access Satellite
Television (VAST) service. To find out about this service and if it applies to you call 1800 20 10 13
or visit the Department of Communications website.
