Offset Printing Process
Rheology of the ink is important to ensure correct ink transfer from the
blanket to the substrate, and to reproduce the image surface
Two types of curing :
Coldset – Ink is cured at room temperature
Heatset – Ink is cured/settled in the heat (150°C)

Improved Printability with SOCAL® &
WINNOFIL® in Offset Inks
Positive effect on misting behaviour – Creep Test
A certain stress is applied to the sample. During this stress the elastic behaviour (Compliance)
is measured. After the stress period the speed to recover its rest structure is measured.
Formulation with
SOCAL® & WINNOFIL®
recovers its rest
structure faster
The use of SOCAL® &
WINNOFIL® has a
positive effect on
misting behaviour

High stability against Citric Acid
The Offset Printing process uses a solution of citric acid. Uncoated CaCO3 would form
Calcium Citrate which disturbs the printing process.

Optical Properties of SOCAL® & WINNOFIL®
in Offset Inks
high Transparency
important for Offset Inks
ultrafine particles (50-80nm) are easy to disperse.
high Gloss
smooth and closed surface finish due to ultrafine particle size
no shear out of larger particles
good compatibility of coated SOCAL® & WINNOFIL® with varnish
increased Pigment Efficiency (Space Holding Effect)
1-3% SOCAL® & WINNOFIL® improves the pigment efficiency.
SOCAL® & WINNOFIL® helps to disperse the pigments (interparticle
friction).
SOCAL® & WINNOFIL® acts as spacer between two pigment
molecules and improve the function of the pigment.

Clay
Gravure Printing
Solvent-based, low viscosity inks
(0.05 – 1 Pa.s)
Can be used for many applications
like magazines, packaging
printing…
Long runs with good quality
BUT gravure cylinders are really
expensive
Substrate / paper
Impression
roller
Doctor blade
Gravure
cylinder
Ink duct
The use of SOCAL® & WINNOFIL® can reduce costs :
SOCAL® & WINNOFIL® reduces formulation costs as it is less
expensive than other pigments
SOCAL® & WINNOFIL® reduces the wear of gravure cylinders,
and therefore reduces maintenance costs
11
Flexography - Process
Synonyms: Flexo, letterpress, relief
Flexo is the modern „Gutenberg“ process
12
Flexography
Printing areas stand up in relief.
Solvent- or water-based, liquid inks (low
viscosity, 0.05-1 Pa.s)
Printing plates are flexible and “soft”, made of
rubber or photopolymers (easy to produce).
Printing plates are mounted onto a cylinder
(easy to change).

Flexography - Summary
Fine SOCAL® grades give good hiding power.
Fine SOCAL® grades act as matting agent.
For matt inks, replacement of TiO2 is possible with fine
SOCAL® grades.
For high gloss applications, small amount of ultrafine SOCAL®
& WINNOFIL® shows positive synergetic effect with TiO2.
Ultrafine SOCAL® & WINNOFIL® grades help to disperse TiO2.
Ultrafine SOCAL® & WINNOFIL® grades improve pigment function of
TiO2 by “spacing effect”.
Small reduction in gloss at 2-5 parts ultrafine SOCAL® & WINNOFIL®.

Screen Printing
Butter-like printing ink, solvent- or water-based, but also
plastisols
Big amount of ink is transferred (10 times more than for
other printing processes)
It is possible to print on any substrates of any shape,
thickness and size!

PVC Screen Printing Plastisols - Summary
Fine SOCAL® grades provide
very matt surface
very white optical properties (cost saving in white pigment)
only small increase in viscosity
very good dispersability
Ultrafine SOCAL® & WINNOFIL® grades in screen printing
plastisols
control the viscosity
act as anti settling agent
improve homogeneous dispersion (pigments, blowing agent)
They also allow the production of matt primers for wall coating
papers before overprinting with foam layers.
Fast drying appears to be a key benefit that is not seen with
natural calcium carbonate (GCC) in this application. Machines can
run faster!
23
