I am sure that you will find it informative and interesting and, as you read through it, I am sure that you will share in our sense of pride in the achievements of our pupils and staff. If there are topics that you would like to explore further, please feel free to get in touch with me. If you have suggestions about the format or content of future reports, I would be pleased to hear your ideas. The theme of this year's report is "Exceptional Success" and this is a theme that is dear to all of our hearts in ISF. In ISF we educate a highly diverse body of students. We believe that a university education should be accessible to most students and that the success of our school should be measured by how much value is added to each student. As you read this report, you will learn about our students' amazing work within the SABIS Student Life Organization®; their successes in the mastery of languages and in some of their many other endeavours such as debating. You will also learn about the chosen universities and degree courses of our graduating class of 2013. Each year the amazing range of university courses and the impressive university destinations of our graduation classes is testimony to the skill and dedication of our university counsellors and to the efficacy our SABIS® system. I am sure that you will share our pride in the achievements of all of these students. All of these achievements are made possible because ISF is a member of the SABIS® School Network. We in ISF are extremely proud to be a member of a large global network, which draws upon over 127 years of experience to deliver an outstanding education to many thousands of children in 15 countries over four continents. All of our students benefit from the distinctive SABIS® Educational System and the very powerful SABIS® assessment and IT tools, including the SABIS Integrated Testing and Learning® system (ITL®), to make outstanding progress throughout their school life. Again this year we have invested in our school and have placed more interactive white boards throughout the school so that the SABIS® curriculum may be taught more efficiently to our students. SABIS® has also made available new SABIS® software tools for our students, such as the ITL® Preplist and the On-Demand Tutoring Program, both available via WebSchool. We have already begun preparations for the next school year. As always, we aim to improve upon our achievements of this year. I hope that, as you review this report, you will share our pride in what we have achieved together this year and that you look forward to being part of our ISF community next year. Angus Slesser ISF School Director 1 Letter from the ISF GmbH Managing Director Widespread studies have shown that education contributes directly to a person's future earning potential; it supports upward mobility and has a powerful effect on the distribution of income and GDP. With the potential to dramatically shape future individuals' earnings and raise their living standard as well as impact the economic development of nations, education is largely considered to be the key to successfully unlocking the future. Helping students unlock the future through education is a complex undertaking that is made more so due to the accelerated pace of change in today's technology-based economy. In order to be able to reap the rewards of education, students must have the skills needed to achieve exceptional success. They must have a solid academic foundation; they must be prepared for jobs that do not even exist today; and they must constantly re-engineer their knowledge and work continuously to hone their soft skills in order to succeed in the wide variety of positions that they will hold as professionals. An education that prepares students to achieve success in today's flattened global environment is also part of the key to the future. As students embark on careers that can take them anywhere in the world, the ability to succeed in "multicultural," "multiracial," and "multinational" settings is a skill that is increasing in demand. The best schools must provide a rich, international curriculum, serve multicultural student bodies and emphasize the teaching of world languages and cultures. These elements contribute to students' development as global citizens; they help foster the development of tolerance, promote an open-minded outlook, and teach students to think outside of the box. As a global education management organization that has been in the business of education for over 127 years, SABIS® understands that education is the key to the future. That is why the SABIS® Educational System implemented at ISF uses proven teaching methods, a dynamic, international curriculum, cutting-edge technological tools, and an engaging SABIS Student Life Organization® to help students build a strong foundation of knowledge and skills and position them to achieve exceptional success in school, university, and beyond. The exceptional success of ISF students is evident in the excellent results consistently achieved on external examinations such as the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE), the International Baccalaureate (IB), and Advanced Placement® (AP®). Year after year, ISF external exam results far exceed global averages. Using the key that their education has provided, ISF graduates have opened the door to some of the most prestigious universities in the world, pursued rewarding careers, and become valuable community members and leaders. Education is the key to the future. At SABIS® we know this and are committed to providing our students at ISF and throughout the SABIS® School Network with the knowledge and skills needed to unlock a future filled with exceptional success. Bringing these benefits and more to students at ISF and other SABIS® member schools, the SABIS® On-Demand Tutoring Project was launched in early 2014. Students who have not fully understood a concept in class, were absent, or want to review a topic before an exam can simply log on to the SABIS® On-Demand Tutoring site through WebSchool, select a concept, and view a pre-recorded video explanation. In keeping with its strategic approach to technology as a whole, SABIS® developed the On-Demand Tutoring Program with a view to adding value to students' educational experience and helping ensure that they will achieve exceptional success. The video tutorials use narration prepared by students through the SABIS Student Life Organization® and carefully vetted by the SABIS® Academic Development Department. Student engagement in the production of the tutorials strengthens their understanding of concepts as they consider the best way to help others understand. Student involvement in the production of the tutorials also fosters the development of essential language arts skills – such as writing and public speaking – and qualities like self-confidence and poise. Mirroring the proven SABIS Point System® of instruction, all tutorials in the SABIS® On-Demand Tutoring Project begin with a clear explanation of the concept. The tutorials then provide time for the student to pause and practice application of the concept on an exercise. As the video continues, the narrator then demonstrates the solution of the exercise to ensure that the concept has been correctly applied before moving on to yet another exercise. ISF students who are enrolled in mathematics and science in grades 7-9, can currently access over 90 tutorial videos. The long-term goal is create a comprehensive library of video tutorials that covers concepts in all subjects and at all grade levels. To access On-Demand Tutoring, ISF students who are enrolled in the grade levels and courses for which ondemand tutorials are available can log on to SABIS® WebSchool at www.webschool.sabis.net. 5 ISF’s Intensive English Program – English as a Second Language The international curriculum implemented at ISF focuses on the core subjects of English and mathematics, gateway subjects that enable students to build a broad, well-rounded knowledge base. As the language of instruction at ISF is English, the school actively promotes the mastery of English as an essential component for exceptional success. In catering to a multinational student body hailing from over 50 nations, ISF offers an Intensive English Program that ensures that each and every student is given the opportunity to master the English language and successfully integrate into the ISF English program for native speakers. As part of the admissions process, all prospective students in grades 2 to 10 take a diagnostic test in English. Based on the results of the test, each student is placed in either English Regular for native speakers or one of three levels of Intensive English— beginners, intermediate, and advanced — depending on their fluency level. Regardless of the Intensive English level, courses focus on the development of 4 skills: reading comprehension, grammar, composition, and vocabulary. The rigorous Intensive English program helps students, some of whom have no prior knowledge of the English language, learn the language quickly and proceed to English Regular classes. In fact, the average amount of time that it takes a student with no prior knowledge of English to progress to English Regular is 3-6 terms, or 1 to 1.5 academic years. By helping non-native speakers of English quickly achieve mother-tongue fluency, ISF lays the foundation for exceptional academic success in school and beyond. Mastery of English also opens new horizons for ISF students, many of whom start out in the Intensive English Program and then go on to attend top universities in the U.K. and in the U.S. This is a great testament to the success of the Intensive English Program at ISF! Grade 7 Intensive English intermediate class 6 Korean and Japanese Native Speaker Programs ISF embraces its multinational student body and takes pride in the wide range of world languages offered to its students. In addition to foreign language courses in English (Intensive English), German, French, and Spanish, ISF also offers native speaker language courses in English, German and Korean and most recently has added native speaker courses in Japanese from grade 9. Additionally, ISF offers mother-tongue courses in Korean and Japanese. ISF students of Korean origin have the opportunity to learn and progress in their native language. The Korean Language Program offered at ISF is available to students in grades 1-12 and prepares students to sit for IGCSE Korean Language exams as well as IB Korean First Language. Grade 9 student in native Korean class As with the Korean Language Program at the school, students of Japanese origin also have the opportunity to study Japanese as a mother-tongue language. The program currently enrols 25 of the 40 Japanese students registered in grades 9-12 at ISF and prepares them for external examinations in their native language including IGCSE and the IB Diploma. The high-quality Korean and Japanese mother-tongue programs offered at ISF are effective in preparing students for admission to top universities in both Korea and Japan. In fact, 8 graduates from the Class of 2013 gained acceptance to top universities in Korea. ISF's Japanese Program, although younger than the Korean program, is also drawing attention and putting ISF Japanese graduates on the map. Having heard of the school's solid academic reputation, in November 2013, a representative from Okayama University in Japan visited ISF to introduce students to the university's well-established faculties of science and medicine. Equipped with a solid foundation of mother-tongue language skills as well as knowledge in a wide range of subjects, ISF Korean and Japanese students are prepared to achieve exceptional success at top universities at home and abroad. Testimonial: "I am currently studying Korean History at Korea University. I would like to thank ISF for all the support and guidance they gave me when I was in the process of applying to universities. These results coupled with ISF students' reputation for having a solid education and essential life skills enable ISF students to pursue their university of choice in their chosen field of study. Over the years, ISF graduates have gone on to attend some of the top universities around the globe. That holds particularly true for the graduates of the Class of 2013, who are currently pursuing university studies at the likes of the University of St. Andrews and King's College in the U.K.; University of California - Berkeley, Boston University, and Purdue University in the U.S.; Goethe Universität in Frankfurt; Universität Salzburg in Austria; and Seoul National University and Korea University in Korea, to name a few. Through a solid academic foundation, thorough preparation for various university entrance qualifications, fluency in English, and personalized university guidance, ISF students are well prepared to achieve exceptional success in university and beyond. Testimonial: "I'm beyond thankful for all the work you put into making my education just perfect! I am now studying at Penn University and I feel that I was very well prepared." -- Luis Stubbe, ISF, Class of 2011 8 The SABIS Student Life Organization® at ISF – Social Responsibilty Department The SABIS Student Life Organization® (SLO®) is an integral part of everyday life at ISF. Through involvement in the various SLO® departments, students develop their academic, managerial, organizational, and leadership skills. SLO® is one of the many ways that ISF provides students with rich opportunities to develop important life skills that prepare them to achieve exceptional success in a changing world. Each of the SLO® departments at ISF successfully contributes to making the school an inspiring and motivating place for everyone. Making a positive contribution to not only the school, but also to the community and world at large is the SLO® Social Responsibility Department. The role of the SLO® Social Responsibility Department is to raise awareness about environmental issues, teach the importance of giving back to the community, and encourage students to help those who are less fortunate. In giving back to the community, this year, the SLO® Social Responsibility Department focused on a drive to collect toys for the children at Bärenherz Kinderhospiz Wiesbaden, a facility that provides housing for terminally ill children and their families. At Bärenherz Kinderhospiz Wiesbaden, children are given the opportunity to live the remainder of their precious lives in relative comfort with their families and with access to necessary medical attention. After collecting generous donations from the ISF community, the SLO® Social Responsibility Department prefects sorted through the donated toys, wrapped them up, and delivered them to the children at Bärenherz Kinderhospiz Wiesbaden. In line with its commitment to helping those who are less fortunate, the SLO® Social Responsibility Department organized a Valentine's Day fundraiser for the ISF Kenya Project, a program that aims to raise funds for the improvement of a school in rural Kenya. This year, the department plans to build a fence around the grounds of the Chitsanze Primary School in Kenya, provide a shaded area for parent-teacher meetings, install a water connection to the school dispensary, and secure basic medical equipment at the school. SLO® students delivering toys to Bärenherz Kinderhospiz, Wiesbaden In addition to showing compassion for others, the SLO® Social Responsibility Department also focuses on raising awareness about the environment. Every year, the first week of June is officially entitled "Environment Week" at ISF. Every day of the week is themed around an environmental issue with a number of activities and games prepared especially for each grade level including Energy Day, Food Day, Green Day, Air Quality Day, and Earth Day. Last year, the SLO® Social Responsibility Department organized a special "Water Day," when lower school students participated in a game that taught them about endangered aquatic species. The department is already working on making this year's "Environment Week" a huge success. Watch the ISF Weekly Update for more information as June draws nearer! Through the multitude of activities organized by the SABIS Student Life Organization® at ISF, the school educates outstanding students who are academically strong, morally sound, mentally sharp, and ready to achieve exceptional success. 9 ISF Debating Club Success First prize in German Junior League ISF debaters returning from competition The Debating Society is one of many successful activities that is organized by the SABIS Student Life Organization® (SLO®) at ISF. Twenty-four (24) juniors and seniors from ISF are currently members of the club, and the team is an active participant in the international debate scene. ISF is very proud of its Debating Club, which currently ranks among the top 10 debating teams in the world. In November 2013, the ISF debating team tied for 7th place out of 40 international teams at the EurOpen Schools Debating Championship. In 2013, 5 juniors on the team won the Junior League Championships of Germany. The successful students from grades 7-9 were Luisa von Bismarck, Amelie Haeberlin, Peter Lee Hamilton, Ksenia Simongauz, and Young Jin Song. The team is now focussed on retaining this title in the future. Debaters at ISF are taught to be systematic in their approach to debating. They learn to be critical thinkers who can approach global issues with clarity and precision of thought. During competition, they have tackled various subjects relating to the European Union, state censorship of the media, performance enhancing drugs in sports, and much more. ISF contributes to the debater's exceptional success by fostering an international community and encouraging them to explore the world through argumentation and analysis. Two (2) ISF students, Luisa von Bismarck and Olivia Scalise Gaspar, will be joining 5 students from schools across Germany on the German national debating team for the final trial of the World Schools Debating Championships (WSDC) in Bangkok, Thailand, in August 2014. She is a positive role model for others and draws on a positive "can-do" attitude to expand her knowledge and understanding of the world beyond the classroom. Second Prize at Entrepreneurs of Tomorrow Awards Ceremony Laura Kuder joined ISF as a KG2 student in 2001. During her 13 years at ISF, Laura Kuder has embraced every opportunity to help her grow into a well-rounded, mature, and responsible individual with a stellar academic record. Laura thrived academically from her first day at ISF. Currently in Grade 12, she has a predicted IB score of 45, the top score possible, and is exploring her options for university. "As well as achieving excellent academic results, Laura is a clear leader and a great role model for the other students. "We have all enjoyed working with her," says Dr. Vivian Strouza, ISF Upper Secondary AQC and IB Coordinator. Ms. Jules Akrigg, Laura's English teacher, adds, "Laura Kuder is one of the most inspiring students I have met in my career so far." However, it is not just her academic performance that makes Laura stand out. Her contributions to the school through Student Life also make her exceptional. Committed to being an active member of the school community, Laura has been an active member of SLO®, where she developed and demonstrated impressive organizational and leadership abilities in roles of responsibility. Between grades 9 and 12, Laura advanced from Senior Prefect to Head Prefect. During that time Laura, with unfailing energy and drive, organized a range of activities including a Mathematics Relay, a Trivia Night, and a trip to a museum. Reflecting on her SLO® involvement she observed, "As Head Prefect, I got involved with all the departments and promoted a positive school spirit." In harmony with creating a positive school spirit, Laura participated in the annual ISF musical productions including "Footloose" and "We Will Rock You." An accomplished sportswoman, Laura also represented ISF at tennis tournaments and won second place in the 2013 GISST competition. Laura did not stop at musical productions and sports. In Grade 11, she participated in the "Entrepreneurs of Tomorrow" competition and won second place for her business plan along with fellow student and team-mate Franziska Gossmann. She also attended the Model United Nations Conference in Genoa, where she was involved in debates on disarmament and international security. "During Laura's long membership of our ISF community, she has only brought credit to the school and herself. She will make a brilliant university student and will undoubtedly carve out for herself a significant and successful career in whatever field she chooses – and that success will be richly deserved," said Mr. Roger Williams, Laura's University and Careers Advisor at ISF. Laura has been offered a place to study at the Ivy League University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, as well as a scholarship to study at Bentley University in Waltham, Massachusetts – one of the USA’s top business schools. She has also received offers from prestigious Russell Group universities in the U.K. including the University of Edinburgh and Durham University. As Laura is set to embark on the next chapter in her life, we wish her the best of luck, confident that her positive attitude and strong academic foundation will help her continue to experience exceptional success and fulfill her dreams. 15 Ann Sophie Bierwirth This is the story of a student who developed over the years from being a child who enjoyed coming to school but lacked motivation for academics to a student who plays an active, central role in daily life at ISF. Ann Sophie Bierwirth first joined ISF as a KG2 student back in 2003. She is currently in Grade 10 and preparing for her IGCSE exams. She is a strong student who particularly enjoys German, geography, and biology and who is well respected by her peers and teachers alike. As a young student at the school, Ann Sophie enjoyed coming to school but lacked motivation. "When I first met Ann Sophie in Grade 4 Science class, she loved doodling and was generally unmotivated” said Ms. Tracy Chute. Little did Ms. Chute know that Ann Sophie's doodling would soon turn into accomplished works Ann Sophie Bierwirth of art, and her lack of motivation would disappear and make way for a young, very active member of her school community. "She has completely changed and is now involved in everything!" said Ms. Chute. Ann Sophie attributes the changes to the SABIS Student Life Organization® at ISF. As a prefect in the SLO® Management Department, Ann Sophie is a daily fixture in the SLO® Office and fully accepts the responsibility of her role. She can regularly be found in the SLO® Office ordering office supplies, turning her hand to the office accounts, and generally doing whatever needs to be done. Ann Sophie is also actively involved in the production of the ISF Student Life Book. She says "I love to come to the SLO® Office to help and be involved in the school". At ISF, Ann Sophie's "doodling" also evolved. Through the art program at the school, Ann Sophie has developed into a talented artist who, among other projects, put a lot of time and effort into designing cultural items for the display on Canada at International Day. This year, Ann Sophie has launched a new initiative with two of her fellow classmates, Maximilian Behrens and Elias Schultze-Lohoelter. They have formed a Student Philanthropic Society. The three classmates felt the need to raise awareness among their peers about international struggles. They have also taken steps to register their organization as an official charity in Germany. Anne Sophie continues to spread sunshine among the ISF community each and every day. Her positive attitude and active engagement will undoubtedly help her achieve exceptional success in life. 16 Download your favorite QR Code Reader and photograph this with your SmartPhone to visit the ISF website. 17 Strasse zur Internationalen Schule 33, 65931 Frankfurt am Main Tel: 069 954319-710 • [email protected] • www.isf-sabis.net
