BRICS countries are marching ahead in the energy sector with new energy strategies. There is a rapid development in
industry and energy consumption escalating into a kind of critical breakdown in these countries. Research and
Innovation is also happening in a massive way in the energy sector to counter such a criticality. This creates a context of
sharing ideas and strategies in this very important area of ‘energy innovation’ in the BRICS countries. Unisa will be
th
th
hosting the Second Annual BRICS Symposium from 5 to 7 March 2014, following the success of this event last year.
This will form part of Unisa’s Annual Research and Innovation week. The symposium will create an opportunity for
scientists and other scholars from the BRICS countries get together to present latest developments in energy research
and share ideas.
This year the symposium focuses on innovation in energy and materials that are associated with new emerging energy
technologies. The symposium will cover the following topics:
1. Renewable energy and strategies
2. Superconductivity and energy applications
3. Nanotechnology and energy applications
