File: JEB-REG ENTRANCE AGE Initial Entrance Requirements Regulations The following statements shall be observed in entering students in kindergarten and grade one. Entrance Requirements – Kindergarten 1. That the entrance age for kindergarten be set at five years of age on or before August 1. 2. A physical examination shall be required within 14 days of registration using the Ohio Department of Health recommended form. The examination shall be administered by the doctor of the family’s choice at family expense. 3. Written verification from the doctor must be presented that the youngster has received or is in the process of receiving, immunization against mumps, hepatitis B, poliomyelitis, measles (rubeola), German measles (rubella) and DPT (diphtheria, pertussis and tetanus). This must be received within 14 days from the start of school. 4. Non-complying students will be excluded from school until further immunizations have been obtained. 5. Proof of birth date must be presented at the time of enrollment. Entrance Requirements – Grade One 1. That the entrance age for first grade be set at six years of age on or before August 1 of the year of admittance. 2. All children must have successfully completed kindergarten for admission to grade one. “Successfully completed kindergarten” and “successful completion of kindergarten” means that the child has completed the kindergarten requirements at one of the following: A. a public or chartered nonpublic school or B. a kindergarten class that is both of the following: 1) offered by a day-care provider licensed under State law; 1 of 3 Pickerington Local School District, Pickerington, Ohio File: JEB-REG 2) if offered after July 1, 1991, is directly taught by a teacher who holds one of the following: a) a valid certificate issued under State law; b) a Montessori Preprimary Credential or age-appropriate diploma granted by the American Montessori Society or the Association Montessori Internationale; c) certification determined to be equivalent to that described in division B, (2), (b) of this section and d) certification for teachers in nontax-supported schools pursuant to State law. 3. If a child does not meet the requirements of items 1, 2A or 2B above, upon request of a parent, this requirement may be waived by the District’s Early Entrance Committee in the case of a child who is at least six years of age by August 1 in the year of admittance, and who demonstrates to the satisfaction of the committee that he/she possesses the social, emotional and cognitive skills necessary for first grade. Students who turn six years old on or after January 2 are not eligible for enrollment into first grade. 4. The board of education of each city, local and exempted village school district shall establish an Early Entrance Committee. The committee shall be composed of all of the following to the extent such personnel are either employed by the District or employed by the Board of Education of the County District within which the District is located and the County District generally furnishes the services of such personnel to the District: A. the gifted coordinator or gifted intervention specialist; B. an elementary school counselor; C. an elementary school principal; D. a school psychologist; and, E. a teacher assigned to teach first grade. 2 of 3 Pickerington Local School District, Pickerington, Ohio File: JEB-REG The responsibility of the Early Entrance Committee shall be limited to the issuing of waivers allowing admittance to the first grade without the successful completion of kindergarten. The committee shall have no other authority except as specified in this section. If the kindergarten requirement is waived, students must present the following to enroll: A. A physical examination within 14 days of registration using the Ohio Department of Health recommended form. The examination shall be administered by the doctor of the family’s choice at the family’s expense. B. Written verification from the doctor that the youngster has received, or is in the process of receiving, immunization against mumps, hepatitis B, poliomyelitis, measles (rubeola), German measles (rubella) and DPT (diphtheria, pertussis and tetanus).
