Congratulations to the 13 researchers who submitted SSHRC Insight Development
Grant applications for the February 2014 competition. Results will be announced in June.
Through the signing of a memorandum of understanding on January 15, TRU and the
three European Universities that make up the International University Network (IUN) have
developed a new and comprehensive partnership, the International Strategic Network
(ISN). At a research summit with faculty that was held at TRU on January 17, TRU and its
ISN partners discussed opportunities for research collaboration, and developed plans for
an international conference on sustainability to be held at the IUN’s World Campus in
Unna, Germany. Read more about TRU’s ISN partnership. The ERA-Can+ project offers
additional opportunities for research partnerships and funding in Europe: http://www.eracan.ca
Congratulations to all who were involved in hosting a successful Philosophy, History and
Politics Undergraduate Conference in January. The conference attracted 59 student
presenters from universities in BC, Alberta and the United States. Read about the
conference: http://research.inside.tru.ca/?p=3419

The Library Research Across the Disciplines Lecture Series features informal
lunchtime talks by faculty about their research. Up next: Florriann Fehr will present
“Understanding the lived experience of student-parents in undergraduate nursing school”
on Feb 27. See http://tru.ca.libcal.com/lectureseries#!/month/2014/02 for details.
The 9th Annual Undergraduate Research & Innovation Conference will be held on
campus Mar 28 and 29. Over 200 students will share their work through poster
presentations, exhibits, readings, performances and concurrent lecture sessions. An initial
schedule is posted at http://ugc.sites.tru.ca/. Elizabeth Rennie, one of the organizers,
says: "We will be seeking faculty moderators in mid-March, but more than anything else
we encourage faculty to save the dates and simply attend as much of the conference as
they are able to. Students have put a lot of work into both their research and in preparing
for the conference, and in order for the experience to truly be a valuable one for them,
they now need an audience. Come and ask questions, engage in discussion, and learn –
there will be 200 eager teachers available to share their expertise and enthusiasm."
Contact Rennie at [email protected] if you'd like to get involved.
TRU will host its first 3-Minute Thesis competition
on March 28. The competition, which originated at
the University of Queensland, challenges graduate
students to present a compelling oration on their
thesis topic and its significance in three minutes,
using only one slide, in language that a layperson can understand. Students will have an
opportunity to win cash prizes, and TRU will pay one student’s way to the Western
Canadian Regional competition at University of Calgary. http://research.inside.tru.ca/?

Graduate students will have an opportunity to take a free Mitacs workshop, Practice Your
Presentation Skills I, on March 22 from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Students must register in
advance.
