Hello, my name is Giedre Rudzionyte. Originally I'm from Lithuania, have been
living here in Iceland for more than five years. I have been working at nursing
home for five years, where I take care of disabled people. I have Bachelor degree
in Icelandic language, and now trying to get another one in Anthropology. My
interests are psychological and social immigrant issues in local community,
cultural anthropology and globalization. If I were elected to be representative
and spokesman in Multicultural Council, I would try to do my best to justify each
of immigrant expectations. Every foreigner in this country should have the
opportunity to live their lives without a fear of adaptation or alienation. Team of
Multicultural council should be prepared not only for practical services, but to
hold seminars and talk about emotional adjustment in this country. Every
immigrant knows those problems that I'm talking about know. It is fear of
speaking in Icelandic, fear of asking for help, fear of loosing their jobs because of
cultural misunderstandings. We should teach people how to face those problems
that are not that visible, but are much more important than others. I think it is my
time to join the team and be the part of those who are going to try to make some
progress.

Hvers vegna langar mig til að bjóða mig fram í fjölmenningarráð? Sem
tvöfaldur innflytjandi (Foreldrar fóru frá Spáni til þýskalands þar sem ég ólst upp
sem útlendingur og svo kom ég til Íslands) veit ég hvernig það er og hver stærstu
vandamálin geta verið. Vegna þess skrifaði ég M. A. ritgerð um fólksflutninga til
Íslands. Þar var meðal annars langur kafli um síðustu 20 árin á Íslandi og fólkið
sem kom hingað til þess að vinna, hvernig það er að vera með fjölskyldu og ekki.
Einnig kenndi ég við Háskola Íslands: „Þýska og þvermenningaleg tjáskipti“.

How long a resident of Iceland? 2 years and 11 months
Interests: I am interested on social networking for development. Regarding Iceland I am very
interested on see how the inherited positive trust circle and social capital in the Icelandic society can
serve as the engine of development.
Further than that I like nature and photography, enjoy arts in its many forms. I find it challenging and
captivating, the (sub)conscious action of analyzing the societies in which I live. I am, on other matters,
the president of the Spanish-speakers association in Iceland and responsible for organizing its cultural
events. Also as a volunteer, I coordinate the Spanish group of the Móðurmál school in Iceland, in where
we teach the other mother tongue to bilingual children.
I am quite active politically and further than my work in grass-roots movement in Spain (that I try to
keep in the distance), here in Iceland I work actively in the building process towards a multicultural
society which can integrate new cultures.
Why you are interested in becoming a candidate in Reykjavík´s Multicultural Council?
I have lived in different countries and places and have always try to add my "grain of sand" to the
society in which I live. Now, I have lived in Iceland for quite a long time and it looks like it is going to
last longer. During this time, I have tried to be involved in many things but still have not found the
proper activity through which I can contribute. With the association of spanish speakers I have done
some collaborations regarding the immigration plan or the multicultural day, or cultural events for
Café Lingua, for example, and maybe it is in this field of multiculturalism where I can contribute the
most. In Spain we have been receiving immigrants for decades (centuries, but let´s not go that far) and
so, multiculturalism, cultures, immigration policies, etc. are a big part of my profession as a Social
educator.
I find very interesting to put into practice my knowledge and experience of building up inclusive
societies in a place like Iceland because, as I said above the inherited social capital should make it
easier with the proper incentives.
I use a lot of tools in the internet to know peoples opinion, and try my best to listen
and comprehend every point of view to find the best solution for everyone.
In general, I find the project challenging and very exciting and I would like very much to do it :)

Mig langar að vinna í málefnum innflytjanda og strýkja stöðu þeirra í borginni,
auka þátttöku þeirra í íslenska samfélaginu og vinna gegn félagslegri einangrun og
fordómum.
Annað sem þú vilt koma á framfæri? Sem túlkur fæ ég oft tækifari til að kynnast
málefnum innflytjenda og ég þekki vel vandarmál sem þeir glíma við. Ég fæ
margar ábendingar um hvernig hægt væri að bæta þjónustu við innflytjendur og
með mögulegri aðild minni í Fjölmenningaráði gæti ég hugsanlega komið þeim á
framfæri.

Hvers vegna langar mig til að bjóða mig fram í fjölmenningarrá: Ég hef mikinn
áhuga á málefnum innflytjenda og býð fram krafta mína og reynslu til að gera Reykjavík
að borg fyrir alla. Ég tel mikilvægt að auka sýnileika innflytjenda á öllum sviðum
samfélagsins, að innflytjendur eigi sér sterka rödd. Það er mikilvægt að innflytjendur geti
nýtt færni sína til fulls í íslensku samfélagi. Jafnframt þarf að efla samskiptin milli ólíkra
hópa. I am passionate about immigrant issues and would like to contribute to existing
efforts to make Reykjavík a true city for all by combining my varied experiences over the
years. I feel it is especially important to increase the visibility of immigrants in all sectors
of society, for immigrants to have a stronger voice, as well as help us reach our full
potential in society while fostering improved understanding between different groups.
Other information: I have gained much from my experience living in Iceland over the
past nine years, as well as time spent in France, Japan and the United States. Having
grown up in Australia to immigrant parents, I also have insight as a ‘second-generation
immigrant.’
I have been part of the media project Vision Media, which aims, in part, to better reflect a
multicultural Iceland and focuses on inclusive journalism, diversity and equality. I have
also covered immigrant issues as a journalist for other media organizations and for the
Immigrant Radio project, where I ran a regular English program from 2006 to early
2009. In addition, I have worked with immigrants as an English teacher and have for
many years worked with asylum seekers and refugees as a volunteer for the Red Cross,
both in Iceland and Australia.

Why I’m interested in becoming a candidate in Reykjavik’s Multicultural
Council?
In a world increasingly torn by identity conflicts, I’m optimistic that here in
Reykjavik and Iceland as a nation diversity is still welcomed and celebrated.
I’m a native Kenyan, the land of safaris and a parent to a school going child. I
share the aspiration and anxiety of immigrants who landed on these shores to
take a shot at job or business, to raise a family, learn Icelandic and achieve the
Nordic dream.
I’m British educated Civil Engineer with multifaceted experience in the corporate
sector, non-governmental organizations and a host of advocacy forums. I have a
track record in servant leadership and innovation to help fix problems.
Significant segments of foreign-born population remain acutely detached from
mainstream Icelandic affairs, often resigned to isolation and eternal lamentation
of the weather. If elected, I will add a progressive voice to the debate and
dialogue with all stakeholders, towards putting more smile and prosperity to the
residents of this awesome town. Let’s make Reykjavik the Human rights’ capital

Ég vil taka þátt í því að koma rödd útlendinga til borginni, og skapa
fyrirmyndastefna hvað innflytjenda- og hælisleitendamál varðar. Ég hef bæði
reynslu og vilja til þess, bæði sem varaþingmaður sem lagði áherslu á
breytingar við útlendingalög, og sem blaðamaður sem hefur fjallað mikið um
fjölmenningarmál. Ég tel að Reykjavík geti sýnt öðrum hvernig sanngjarn og
virk stefna í þetta sviði virkar, og mig langar að leggja hönd á plóg og vinna í því
sviði. Annað sem þú vilt koma á framfæri?: Ég er bara þakklátur fyrir tækifæri
að bjóða mig fram, og tel mig heppinn að búa í borg sem er þegar að gera
töluvert gott hvað fjölmenningu varðar.

Iceland is my home, my love and my life. With that love comes obligation to my
fellow Icelanders whether being born here or abroad. We are all in this together
and should all take part in making this country a better place. If I can use any of
my abilities, knowledge or talents to better where I live, I would certainly never
pass up an opportunity to do so. This would be a wonderful experience for me to
share thoughts and hopefully improve our systems which in return would
improve the lives of others.

Ég hef búið á Íslandi í samtals 14 ár.
Félagsstörf/áhugamál: Ég hef mjög mikinn áhuga á því að ferðast og kynnast
nýjum menningarheimum. Ég hef að sjálfsögðu mikinn áhuga á málefnum
innflytjenda og hef verið sjálfboðaliði hjá Rauða krossinum í nokkur ár. Þar tók
ég t.d. þátt í samstarfsverkefni Rauða krossins og UNHCR þar sem ég starfaði með
flóttamönnum og innflytjendum á Íslandi. Verkefnið snérist aðallega um að
auðvelda fólki að aðlagast íslensku samfélagi og að vera því innan handar.
Hvers vegna langar mig að bjóða mig fram í fjölmenningarráð ? Sjálf er ég
hálf-spænsk og hef flutt mjög oft á milli landa. Ég hef búið á Spáni, Íslandi, í
Danmörku, Noregi og Mósambík. Ég hef sjálf verið innflytjandi í mörgum löndum
og mér þykir áhugavert fá tækifæri til þess að hafa áhrif á málefni sem kemur mér
við og tækifæri til þess að vinna með ólíku fólki að því að skapa stefnu í þessum
málum.
