From the Pastor’s Study
2When the day of Pentecost had come, they were
all together in one place. 2And suddenly from
heaven there came a sound like the rush of a
violent wind, and it filled the entire house where
they were sitting. 3Divided tongues, as of fire,
appeared among them, and a tongue rested on
each of them. 4All of them were filled with the
Holy Spirit and began to speak in other
languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.

Dear Friends,
One of the great celebrations of the church year is Pentecost. We
know it as the day that the Holy Spirit came to the disciples and the
church began. Here in the United States, it has not been recognized in
the secular culture in the same way that Christmas and Easter have
been. But, even now in Europe, many countries have a public holiday on
the Monday after Pentecost.
The scriptural account tells us that Pentecost is an ancient Jewish
harvest celebration. Jews today still celebrate it as “Shavuot”. The Book
of Acts tells us that after His resurrection, Jesus stayed with the
disciples for forty days. Then He ascended into heaven. In the second
chapter of Acts, ten days have passed since his ascension and people
from all over the known world are coming into Jerusalem to celebrate
Pentecost. The disciples are gathered together wondering how they can
continue the work that Jesus started.
And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a
violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were
sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a
tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy
Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them
ability.
With the presence of the Holy Spirit, the disciples are given the
ability to tell of the power of Jesus Christ to all that are gathered in
Jerusalem. They are able to speak in different languages so that
everyone may hear and understand. Acts tells us that over three
thousand people become followers of Jesus Christ on that day.

PASTOR’S MESSAGE CONTINUED; CAKE WALK
The birthday of the church is cause for a party! Here at The Congregational Church of
New Canaan we will observe Pentecost by hearing from our young people on Children’s
Sunday. It is fitting that through all the events that day we will be celebrating our future as
we honor our beginnings.
As we enter into the summer months and each of us begins the blessed tasks of
relaxation and renewal, I encourage each of us to ask ourselves the following questions:
How can I continue the work that Jesus started? And, How can I share God’s love to
others in a way that they will understand?
Blessings,
Anne

weekly to children’s choir rehearsals and to sing on
Sundays. The theology of the church is presented
through music so children received Biblical stories
