New state of Telangana is born in southern India
India's southern state of Andhra Pradesh has formally split in two, with its northern area
carved out to create a new state called Telangana.
The move followed prolonged protests by residents of Telangana, who felt the region had
long been neglected.
Telangana, which officially came into existence at midnight local time, becomes the country's
29th state.
With a population of 35 million, it comprises 10 former districts of Andhra Pradesh and the
city of Hyderabad.
K Chandrasekhar Rao, of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi party (TRS), which for 14 years
spearheaded the movement for separation and will form the new state's first government, has
been sworn in as the chief minister for Telangana.

Hyderabad, which forms the joint capital of the two states for the next 10 years, was covered
with pink balloons, banners and flags to mark Telangana's statehood, says BBC Hindi's
Zubair Ahmed. Pink is the colour of the TRS.
"The sacrifice of our people and the youth who led the movement has culminated in the
formation of a new state. It is a historic day for us," Krishank, a local student leader, said.
He said providing jobs to thousands of young people should be a top priority of the new
government.
But there are also opponents of the division. One, A Ravi, said he was unhappy that his
"beloved state had been torn apart".
"It's a sad day because we speak the same language and have no distinct identity. Politicians
played a dirty role in dividing the state into two," Mr Ravi, an info-tech professional, told
BBC Hindi.
Andhra Pradesh and Telangana share the same language of Telugu.
Correspondents say the large state of Andhra Pradesh was deeply divided economically, with
people in the less-developed Telangana region feeling largely neglected.
India's upper house approved a bill to carve out the new state in February, despite opposition
from lawmakers in the Congress Party, which governed Andhra Pradesh.
The then chief minister of Andhra Pradesh state, Kiran Kumar Reddy, resigned after
parliament approved the bill.
Opponents are unhappy that Hyderabad, which is home to many major information
technology and pharmaceutical companies, would become a shared state capital.
After 10 years, Andhra Pradesh is expected to develop a new capital.

Salaam Telangana: Hopes soar in Telangana as India sees birth of its
29th state
TNN | Jun 2, 2014, 05.36 AM IST
HYDERABAD: The movement for a separate state from one region of Andhra Pradesh
lasting several decades but bitterly opposed by the other climaxed with the birth of Telangana
and Residuary Andhra Pradesh at the stroke of June 1-2 midnight. Symbolizing the
divergent views on the issue in both the regions, in Telangana, the 29th state of India, the
celebrations began on Sunday evening itself, with crackers being burst, sweets being
distributed and an air of expectation and hope resounding across the region. In contrast, the
mood in AP was sombre, with the entire region enveloped in silence but nonetheless with a
resolve to move ahead with similar hopes and aspirations. Telangana region, especially
Hyderabad, turned pink in anticipation of the swearing-in of TRS president K Chandrasekhar
Rao as the first chief minister of the new state at 8.15am on Monday
While it will be life as usual in AP on Monday where the the new government headed by
TDP's Chandrababu Naidu is to take charge only on June 8, in Telangana, President's Rule
will end, and a popular TRS government will take charge. KCR is scheduled to pay floral
tributes at the Martyr's Memorial at Gun Park near Public Gardens at 7.30 am before
proceeding for the swearing-in ceremony at the Raj Bhavan. From there, the new CM is
scheduled to go to party headquarters Telangana Bhavan and garland the statue of Telangana
Talli. The first public event in the new state is the Telangana Formation Day celebrations at
Parade Grounds at 11 am. The TRS is expected to distribute mini-biryani packets to all the
attendees of the Formation Day celebrations. KCR will enter his premises in C Block of the
Secretariat at 12.57 pm and occupy the chair of the chief minister. And the task of running the
new administration will begin with a cabinet meeting in the afternoon. Telanganites are
hoping that their aspirations for which they fought for a separate state for decades will be met
with by the new TRS government. "The separate state agitation was for development of
Telangana, jobs for locals, incentives for farmers and providing basic amenities like health
and housing. There is an air of expectation that KCR will set out to achieve them during the
five years for which he has got a clear mandate from the people," said 72-year-old city
engineer G Narsing Rao who has kept track of the Telangana agitation from 1969 to 2001,
when it was revived by the TRS. The mood in the new state of AP may be sombre but is not
one of pessimism. "We have opposed the division of united Andhra Pradesh. But the
Congress went ahead with it for which they have paid the price. We have voted in
Chandrababu Naidu. With the NDA in power at the Centre, and the TDP in the state, we
expect re-building of the Seemandhra region in a grand scale in the coming five years. The
parting is over, let us both go on our ways and concentrate on development," said Vikram
Reddy, software professional from Vijayawada. The last time the country witnessed such an
event was in 2000 when the then NDA government had split Uttar Pradesh to create
Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh to create Chhattisgarh and Bihar to give birth to Jharkhand, a
process that was peaceful and welcomed by everyone. But in the case of Telangana and AP,
the wounds will take a long time to heal as there are several issues still left like assets and
liabilities, power, irrigation and employees to be divided between them. In the meantime, the
people in both the new states look hopefully to the new governments to execute the
development mantra that they promised in their election manifestoes.

Indien hat einen neuen Bundesstaat: Telangana
2. Juni 2014
Gestern um Mitternacht bekam Indien seinen 29. Bundesstaat: Der ostindische Bundesstaat
