INTRODUCTION
The American Academy of Medical Acupuncture is pleased to present a
symposium designed to meet an expressed need to explore the mechanisms
of acupuncture from several different perspectives, and to examine current
scientific research in the field of medical acupuncture. This meeting addresses
topics suggested by practitioners and stresses many different approaches for
addressing practical clinical problems. An emphasis on evidence-based scientific research is integrated with practical protocols for the serious clinician.
Surveys and evaluations from previous symposia indicate that there is a desire
for more information about acupuncture techniques that honor the rich history
of Asian medicine as applied to the contemporary, Western medical practice.
The various approaches and styles reviewed will include: Mechanism of
Acupuncture and Moxibustion, Working with Qi, Auricular Medicine, Five
Element Acupuncture, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Korean Hand Acupuncture Therapy, Medical Qigong, Neuroanatomical approach, Japanese
Acupuncture, Spiritual acupuncture, Osteopathic Manipulation, Pulse Diagnosis and Pearls of Medical Acupuncture.
This conference will offer a multi-tiered approach for the understanding and
clinical relevance of acupuncture in daily practice. It will expand our awareness of scientific research into the effects of acupuncture, and provide participants with information about different approaches for the treatment of
common conditions seen in clinical practice. Clinicians will learn multi-faceted
ways to tailor acupuncture treatments for their individual patients. This conference will focus on clinically relevant treatment approaches that can easily be
integrated into clinical practice.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
The Symposium is designed for instruction and training of health care
professionals interested in or already practicing acupuncture. Medical
practitioners with no experience and those with extensive backgrounds in
medical acupuncture will find the program useful in their medical practices.
The Pre-Symposium Workshops are intended to provide a more concentrated
learning experience where the faculty can spend the entire day focused on a
topic in greater depth and with more time for practical examples from clinical
experiences.

PRE-SYMPOSIUM WORKSHOP I
Eight Modalities for Working with Qi
Workshop will be led by Gabriel Stux, MD,
OMD, PhD. This workshop draws on more than
30 years of experience in acupuncture and Chinese medicine and new methods and modalities
of energy medicine. Of these eight modalities, different ways of using qigong and meditation are
the most essential.
Special attention is given to conscious breathing
with regard to different parts of the body, and the
chakras, and to using the hands to help bring increased awareness to these spaces within the
body. This approach facilitates the interconnections between the organs by drawing on their five
sources of energy (qi or prana) and circulating this
in the nourishing Mother–Child (sheng) cycle of
the Five Elements (wuxing). The main intention of
this workshop is to bring soul and body more together and connect the soul with the spaces of
the five zang organs. Additionally, awareness is
directed to the flow of energy, focusing on the
light level of the life force in the chakras. When
the crown chakra has been opened as the first
modality, light and energy can flow from the soul
(the eighth chakra) into the heart space and then
through the whole body. This awareness of light
exemplifies the spiritual application of the different modalities.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this workshop, attendees
will be able to...
• Understand and practice acupuncture in
connection with organ flow qi gong.
• Recognize the energy of the different organs
and functions in relation with chakras.
• Describe the 7 chakras, their location
and functions.
• Practice organ flow qi gong meditation and
chakra acupuncture.
PRE-SYMPOSIUM WORKSHOP II
Pearls of Medical Acupuncture:
From Philosophical, Diagnostic,
and Therapeutic Perspectives
Workshop presented by Steven K.H. Aung,
MD, OMD, PhD. Medical acupuncture is the
application of the ancient art of needling of
specific body points to realign the physiological
and pathological imbalances in the human body.
This presentation focuses on methods in choosing philosophical pearls — the most essential
acupoints — in various TCM approaches of
Yin-Yang, Five Elements, Zang Fu, Qi, Blood and
Essence. Furthermore, the presentation aims to
share a comprehensive knowledge on accurate
TCM diagnosis through visual inspection,
auscultation, olfactory inquiry and palpation.
It also describes the vital importance of inspection of the tongue, ears, hands, and pulse in
medical diagnoses. In properly choosing
acupuncture points, not only is the physical aspect considered but rather a holistic approach
which includes the mental and spiritual perspectives are given key importance. Given that most
chronic patients have symptoms and conditions
that are often associated with spiritual components, it is thus imperative that medical practitioners of the 21st century understand an integrative
approach to effectively provide health and
wellness to our patients.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this workshop, attendees
will be able to...
• Appreciate the value of the philosophical aspect
of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
• Understand the importance of accurate
diagnosis in TCM.
• Properly apply the therapeutic TCM approaches
for various disorders.
PRE-SYMPOSIUM WORKSHOP III
Living the Dao:
Illuminating the Path to Healing
Workshop presented by Jeffrey Yuen, LAc.
Healing is one of the most elusive processes
within the human body. It can infer the absence of
signs and symptoms, the life-changing choices to
be made in efforts to heal, or even the provision
toward death. Many modalities and systems of
medicine have evolved in asserting how to heal
and what needs to occur in the process of healing. Yet none can address why healing occurs.
Within Chinese medicine as a system in modernity, it too had found difficulty in addressing the
“nature” of healing. Yuen, coming from a Daoist
perspective, will demonstrate how this workshop
commits to exploring, provoking, and reflecting
on the themes that are considered fundamental to
understanding and embracing healing.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this workshop, attendees
will be able to...
• Understand the concepts of healing and health.
• Describe the impact of social and religious
influences on health.
• Explain the role of acupuncture and TCM on
individual’s level of awareness in healing.
• Recognize the insights and empowerment
through reflective meditations.
PRE-SYMPOSIUM WORKSHOP IV
Korean Hand Acupuncture,
Intermediate Level
Workshop led by Yue-Pang (Pat) Mok, MD,
FAAMA. Dr. Mok will begin with reviewing the
basic principles of Korean Hand Acupuncture
Therapy (KHT); and then will have more in depth
discussion on constitutional balance through the
Yin-Yang pulse diagnosis. Advanced KHT techniques will be presented which include the explanation of comprehensive KHT strategies and the
application of the Eight Curious Meridian pulse diagnosis and treatments. Ample opportunity will be
provided for extensive hands on practice.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this workshop, attendees
will be able to...
• Understand the theory of KHT.
• Explain corresponding symptomatic therapy.
• Describe constitutional balance.
• Recognize the Extraordinary Meridians approach
through KHT.
• Demonstrate the Meridian therapy in KHT.
