Biological effect measurements: tools for a
sustainable product development and
environmental policy!
HOW TO GET THERE
th
November 18 2014 – Technologiehuis Mol, Belgium
Biological effect measurements are – besides the classical
chemical measurements - required by law for a number of
applications and their use as complementary instruments
in environmental risk assessment is becoming more
prominent. The use of biological tests in sustainable
product and process development and in daily care for the
environment are illustrated with practical examples during
this workshop.
In the morning session the European legislation and the
use of biotests for registration dossiers (REACH, CLP,
biocides) are explained. Potential health effects or
hazardous properties of chemical substances and mixtures
need to be identified with specific biological tests
according to EU guidelines. At the EU level the use of
animal-replacing toxicology tests is encouraged.

Workshop
Biological effect measurements:
tools for a sustainable product
development and environmental
policy!
In the afternoon session the use of biological tests to
characterize the hazardous properties of waste water,
waste materials and mixtures is illustrated. These matrices
often consist of a complex mixture of chemicals and
potential hazardous effects cannot simply be predicted
from the chemical data. Applying biotests directly on such
complex materials therefore is a more straightforward way
to characterize the hazardous properties and results can be
used as an important policy instrument to limit waste
water discharges and for classification of hazardous waste.
Biological measurements can help to select the most
environmental friendly alternative during product
development, specific biotests can help to detect
carcinogenic compounds and test batteries of biotests can
be used as a watchdog for activities that can pose a risk of
exposure to chemicals. These applications are illustrated
with case studies.
The ABS team welcomes you to visit the in vitro and
ecotoxicity test facilities, with high concern for quality
assurance (GLP, ISO).
