The Australian Kendo Championships is a Kendo Board event that is hosted and organised by a different state or territory each year. It is the one time a year when all the top Kendo players from around Australia come together to test their skill and resolve. We all look forward to seeing an excellent display of Kendo skill and wish all the competitors the best of luck for both competition and grading. “In skill opposed, in spirit united.” Brian Brestovac i Chair of Australian Kendo Board Schedule Friday, 18 April 2014 7:00 am ‒ 11:00 am 11:00 am ‒ 1:00 pm 1:00 pm ‒ 3:00 pm Hall setup Registration and shinai weighing Shinpan seminar Saturday, 19 April 2014 7:00 am 8:00 am 8:30 am 11:00 am 11:30 am 12:00 pm 1:00 pm 4:00 pm 7:00 pm ‒ ‒ ‒ ‒ ‒ ‒ ‒ ‒ ‒ 8:00 am 8:30 am 11:00 am 11:30 am 12:00 pm 1:00 pm 4:00 pm 4:40 pm 10:00 pm Final registration and shinai weighing Opening ceremony Kyu Individuals Women’s Kyu Individuals Women’s Dan Individuals Lunch Open Individuals Jigeiko Championship dinner Sunday, 20 April 2014 7:00 am 8:30 am 10:30 am 11:30 am 1:00 pm 2:00 pm 3:00 pm 5:00 pm 5:30 pm ‒ ‒ ‒ ‒ ‒ ‒ ‒ ‒ ‒ 8:30 am 10:30 am 11:30 am 1:00 pm 2:00 pm 3:00 pm 5:00 pm 5:30 pm 6:10 pm Hall open Kyu Teams Women’s Teams Veterans’ Individuals Lunch Kata Pairs Open Teams Closing ceremony Jigeiko Monday, 21 April 2014 7:00 am ‒ 9:00 am 9:00 am ‒ 12:30 pm 12:30 pm ‒ 1:30 pm 1:30 pm ‒ 4:00 pm 4:00 pm ‒ 5:00 pm Hall open Seminar session 1 / concurrent Australian Squad training at Kent Street Senior High School Lunch Seminar session 2 Goodwill keiko Tuesday, 22 April 2014 7:00 am 9:00 am 12:30 pm 1:30 pm 4:00 pm ‒ ‒ ‒ ‒ ‒ 9:00 am 12:30 pm 1:30 pm 4:00 pm 5:00 pm Hall open Seminar session 3 Lunch Seminar session 4 Goodwill keiko Wednesday, 23 April 2014 7:00 am ‒ 8:30 am 8:30 am ‒ 10:00 am 10:00 am ‒ 12:00 pm 12:00 pm Hall open and grading registration Kendo grading up to 3dan Kendo grading for 4dan and 5dan Close of grading 1 Kyu Individuals 1 2 3 ACT Kevin Pek VIC Jularaj Suthibutr SA Cameron Wheeler WA Kyle Gillam Randy LeBherz QLD Jodic Chan NSW Duncan Pilcher VIC Hae Zhang NSW QLD Ernesto Yucada Aaron Tootell QLD NSW Andrew Bunder Tony Liu NSW WA Mitchell Askew Justin Hoon WA Sigmund Bautista Robert Reid VIC Sergei Segodin SA Bong Suk Song NSW NSW SA Nicholas Evans 1st 2nd 3rd Women’s Kyu Individuals NSW 1 2 Julie Tran WA Catherine McKnight VIC Cassandra O’Mara VIC Kristine Ventura WA Abbie O’Brien Knock-out for 3rd places 2 1st 2nd 3rd 4 5 6 Women’s Dan Individuals 1 2 NSW Julie Feng Jin Yi Jenny Song NSW QLD VIC Alexandra Paukovits Kate Sylvester VIC Katie Marx Michelle Fenn WA ACT Sharyn Wragg Kathleen Macdonald WA VIC Yuko Mayumi Bonnie Lai NSW NSW Sioh Yang Tan Junko Nomura VIC 3 4 1st 2nd 3rd Veterans’ Individuals 1 2 WA Chiharu Fukumoto Brian Brestovac WA VIC Gary Oliver Shoko Bunder NSW NSW David Bunder Ken Okamoto QLD QLD Noriyuki Tamura Kazu Uchino WA ACT Joachim Semmler Toshio Nishimoto SA NSW 3 4 Hayami Aboutaleb 1st 2nd 3rd 3 Open Individuals NSW 1 2 3 5 6 Kai Huang WA Anthony Tilbury VIC Haruki Reid NSW Trent Reeve VIC QLD Michael Henstock Masaya Wada QLD Hidetaka Tani WA Richard T’en VIC WA Orrin O’Brien Nicholas Chan QLD Kazuyasu Komemoto WA Nigel O’Brien Duy Pham Bernard Yehuda WA Martino Ellero ACT Kelvin Tran NSW WA Nelson Chow William Rosenthal SA ACT Brendan Kee Tarl O’Mara VIC NSW Kostadinos Zafirakos Susan Bonar WA NSW Takayuki Suzuki Stan Corrigan VIC VIC Son Nguyen Fabian Chee Fei Yong WA WA Courtney Babb QLD Ryo Atsumi WA Geoff McFadden VIC Kazuya Kimura SA Christopher Wallace 1st 2nd 3rd 4 NSW David Fitzgibbon VIC NSW 4 Taek Yang Luke Lee NSW Ernest Ng WA Jayson Chaplin NSW John Larkin ACT 7 8 9 10 11 12 Kata Pairs 1 2 3 ACT Women’s Teams 1 VIC QLD WA VIC NSW 2 1st SA 2nd WA Fighting Spirit Awards NSW 1st 2nd Kyu Teams QLD 1 SA WA NSW VIC 2 1st 2nd Open Teams 1 QLD SA VIC NSW WA ACT 2 1st 2nd 5 Kendo Basics Kendō 剣 道 , meaning "The Way of the Sword", descended from many traditional Japanese swordmanship (kenjutsu) styles, and is now a widely-practised sport and martial art around the world. The concept of Kendō is to discipline the human character through the application of the principles of the sword. Kendō uniform consists of keiko-gi and hakama. The bamboo sword, shinai, represents the katana. The padded armour, bōgu, presents four scoring targets: 6 Men 面 (head) Kote 小手 (forearm) Dō 胴 (torso) Tsuki 突 (throat) Shiai Basics Shiai, meaning competition, is fought between two Kendo players. The player who scores 2 points, or manages to lead by 1 point when time runs out, will be declared the victor. The players wear a red or white ribbon on their backs. Each match is officiated by three referees (shinpan) carrying red and white flags. Shinpan Table Shiai-jō Match area Fukushin Sub-shinpan 副審 副審 白 赤 主審 Shiro White player Shushin Main shinpan Aka Red player 7 Competition Format Individual divisions usually begin with pools of three players. Each player will fight two other players. The player with the most matches won will be declared the victor and progress through. If there is a tie, the player with the most scores will be declared the victor. If there is still a tie between two players, then a sudden death match (ippon-shobu) will be played.
