Foreword
The Kendo Board and the West Australian Kendo Renmei would
like to welcome all competitors and delegates to the 39th Australian
Kendo Championships.
The Australian Kendo Championships is a Kendo Board event that
is hosted and organised by a different state or territory each year. It
is the one time a year when all the top Kendo players from around
Australia come together to test their skill and resolve.
We all look forward to seeing an excellent display of Kendo skill
and wish all the competitors the best of luck for both competition
and grading.
“In skill opposed, in spirit united.”

Kendo Basics
Kendō 剣 道 , meaning "The Way of the Sword", descended from
many traditional Japanese swordmanship (kenjutsu) styles, and is
now a widely-practised sport and martial art around the world.
The concept of Kendō is to discipline the human character through
the application of the principles of the sword.
Kendō uniform consists of keiko-gi and hakama.
The bamboo sword, shinai, represents the katana.
The padded armour, bōgu, presents four scoring targets:

Men 面 (head)
Kote 小手 (forearm)
Dō 胴 (torso)
Tsuki 突 (throat)
Shiai Basics
Shiai, meaning competition, is fought between two Kendo players.
The player who scores 2 points, or manages to lead by 1 point
when time runs out, will be declared the victor.
The players wear a red or white ribbon on their backs.
Each match is officiated by three referees (shinpan) carrying red
and white flags.

Competition Format
Individual divisions usually begin with pools of three players.
Each player will fight two other players. The player with the most
matches won will be declared the victor and progress through.
If there is a tie, the player with the most scores will be declared the
victor. If there is still a tie between two players, then a sudden
death match (ippon-shobu) will be played.
