thought of creating the world. The world
then took shape from his thoughts.

Out of Brahma’s shadow
Kardama Pra-jaa-pati
was born. He married this son to Devahuti.
Au-rat : Ach-chaa.
Woman : Good.
At this time Kardama Prajaapati was
performing intense penance. Devahuti
with matchless devotion served her
husband who was absorbed in deep penance for thousands
of years.
Kardama Prajaapati was very pleased with
Devahuti’s purity and dedicated service.
He created for her marvelous mansions, attendants and a
flying chariot. He also recognized her motherly nature.
Nine daughters were born to that righteous couple. They were
Kalaa, Anasuya, Shraddhaa, Havirbhuva, Gati, Kriya, Vrijya,

EAGLE TEMPLATE
FOR YOU TO TRACE AND CUT OUT
In order to fulfill Lord Brahma’s command to help the
creation Maha rishi Atri
and Anasuya
went to the Nirvindya river and began a very rigorous tapas.
Standing on one leg in Garud-aasana and
controlling his breath according to Praa-na-yaa-ma
and living on air Atri was immersed in deep
meditation (samadhi) for a hundred years.
Anasuya,
the ideal wife undertook similar disciplines.
She vigilantly guarded Atri’s tapas so that no obstacle could
disturb him. Atri’s achievements caused wonder to all the
worlds.
Owing to the unique Praanayaama practiced
by the Maha rishi a mighty fire arose in his
body. That fire burst forth from the invisible
opening in the center of the forehead in
powerful smoke coloured flames.

However, the distress of the

Then the three gods (Trimurthi) blessed

Only such a chaste devotee, someone

HELP THE GODDESSES FIND
SAGE ATRI AND ANASUYA MATA
The boy smiled and said, “Oh
Mother, O Father, I understand
your feelings. I am also eager to
be born as your son and to please
you with my boyish pranks. I am
DATTA. Wait for sometime and I
will give myself to you.”
The saintly couple, filled with joy, returned to their hermitage
near Dandakaaranya. They continued their routine austerities
and lived happily.
One day Saint Narada declared in heaven that Anasuya was
the greatest and purest woman in the world. The Gods
wanted to test Anasuya’s greatness. They sent Narada to Atri
and Anasuya.
Sage Narada came to the hermitage
with Bengal gram made of iron. He
gave Anasuya the grain and requested
Anasuya to cook it for him.
However much she tried the grain would not
cook. It was as hard as iron but when she used
her power of will, the grain became soft and
fragrant. Narada felt very happy and left.
The Devi’s wanted to test the greatness of Anasuya.
The Devis lost their husbands.
What had happened to the trio? Where were they?

Anasuya sprinkled water from the tips of
her fingers on the heads of those young
sages. The next moment the three young
sages became pretty babies.

Such was the greatness of Anasuya!

Thinking they were her babies she
breastfeed them.
She put them in
cradles and singing lullabies put them to
sleep.
On returning from the river Atri
Maharishi was overjoyed to see
the babies. They enjoyed the
frolics of those children and did
not notice time passing.
Lakshmi, Saraswati and Parvati were missing their
husbands, and came to know what had happened. They
now realized Anasuya’s greatness!
The goddesses went to the
hermitage, told the couple the story.
They had sent their husbands to
test Anasuya’s greatness. Their
husbands who had come as young
sages were now babies. They
begged Anasuya to return their
husbands.

Story continued……..
He returned to heaven and when the goddesses heard
about this they wanted to prove Ansuya’s greatness and
purity.
They asked their husbands,
Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva
to test Anasuya’s greatness
once more. They agreed.
Disguised as saints, the three gods
arrived at lunch time and begged
Anasuya to serve them food. Atri was not
at home. Any guest at noon is equal to
Lord Vishnu. So Anasuya was about to
serve them, when they said, “We will only
eat if you serve us without clothes.”
Anasuya thought, ‘My honour will be
reduced if I come out without clothes in
front of men. If I refuse it will be dishonour
to the guests and they can take away all of
Atri’s power. These are not ordinary guests as they are trying
to place me in a tricky situation.”
She quickly meditated on her husband. The three saints had
called her as Mother “Bhavati, Bhiksham Dehi!” (“Oh Mother,
give us some food!”). An idea quickly flashed in her mind.
