MARKET COMMENT: USDA Market news reports that the apple demand is “fairly good” and that the market is
“about steady”. Nectarines: Two layer tray pack various yellow flesh varieties : Size 30’s $20 to $24, Size 36 $20
to 24, size 40/45’s $18 to 22, Size 48’s $16 to $20, Size 50’s $16 to $20, size 54’s $14 to $18, 25# cartons loose
various yellow varieties 2 3/8’s min. $18 to $20.Peaches: WA. XCY two layer various yellow flesh varieties Size
30/36 $16 to $18, Size 40/44’s $15 to $18, Size 48/50’s $14 to $16, Size 54’s $14 to $15.
NEW CROP SHIPMENTS: New crop pear shipments season-to-date are: 159 cars of Bartlett, 3 cars of d’anjou, 1
car of Bosc pears and 22 other varieties for a total of 185 cars. New crop apples: Gala 532 cars, Honeycrisp 9 cars,
Golden Delicious 3 cars, other varieties 183, for a total of 727 cars.
IS THIS HAPPENING ON YOUR FARM: While I have no proof I have heard the rumor that occasionally the
following happens: Employee tops off a bin of fruit. The supervisor says – “that’s not how it’s done here”. I need two
more bags of pears on top of that bin. Later an employee goes from bin to bin and puts those two bags of extra fruit
from each bin into another bin(s). The rumor is that someone other than who picked those bins may be getting paid
for picking those pears???
GROWERS CONTROL FRUIT SUPPLY: The 2014 Washington fresh apple crop is estimated at 140 million boxes.
The total US apple crop is estimated to be 8% over last year and up 15% from the five year average. Grower
returns and consumer demand can be improved if the marginal & lower grade fruit is kept off the fresh market. In
most cases, it is best for growers to divert marginal, lower grade, hail grade, and smaller size fruit directly
from the orchard to the processor. Growers should check with their warehouse to see what grades and sizes
best fit the marketing program for that warehouse. Growers are also encouraged to watch their fruit being packed
at the warehouse and monitor the quality, grade and size of their fruit.
TREE FRUIT ASSOCIATION MERGERS: The Washington Growers Clearing House Association board met
th
August 19 . At that meeting the WGCHA board of directors recognizing that the vote of membership
overwhelmingly voted to approve/authorize the merger of the WGCHA with the Wenatchee Valley Traffic
Association, Yakima Valley Growers & Shippers Association and the Washington State Horticultural Association
and as such voted 14 to 1 to authorize the board president/Vice President and Secretary of the Association to
execute the Merger Documents and to take such actions necessary to carry out the terms and conditions set forth
in the Merger Documents and any other actions necessary to finalize the transaction. The board also approved
severance packages for any WGCHA employees that are not hired by the new association. The merger agreement
and other related documents will be submitted to the Secretary of State for final approval. The Washington State
Tree Fruit Association plans to begin operations on September 2, 2014. Office locations remain in Wenatchee and
Yakima, Jon DeVaney is President of the new association.
