HAPPY HOLIDAYS! Someone who holds you in very high regard has signed you up for one glorious year of Lucky Peach magazines being delivered straight to your doorstep. Your first issue will arrive in February. In the meantime, please accept and admire this origami candy box that your loved one meticulously assembled for you. Instructions for making an origami gift Box Print out the accompanying Lucky Peach gift subscription PDF, fold it into a candy box, present it to the recipient of a new Lucky Peach subscription. Be sure to explain just how much effort went into this, and lord it over them for the rest of the year. 1 Print out the pattern PDF on a regular 8.5" x 11" piece of paper. Start by trimming the sheet into a square: fold the top left corner of the paper down to line up with the right edge of the sheet. 2 Fold and crease the bottom, rectangular-shaped portion of the paper into the line where your previous fold ended. Unfold. 3 Carefully tear or cut off the rectangular bottom of the paper (with the gift note) along the creased line, and set to the side. This will be used later as your gift note. 4 Now you have a square. 5 Fold the square in half. Unfold. Rotate the paper 90 degrees and fold in half again. Unfold. You should be left with creases that divide the paper into four equal squares. 6 With the printed pattern facing down, fold the bottom of the paper into the center. (It doesn’t matter which way your paper is oriented.) Unfold. Repeat with the top of the paper. 7 Rotate the paper 90 degrees, and repeat the folds from step 6, but do not unfold. Flip the piece of paper over, flap side down. 8 Fold the left edge of the paper in to meet the farthest crease on the other side of the paper. Unfold. Repeat this on the other side. 9 With the paper still flap-side down, fold the bottom edge of the paper in to the center line. Repeat this with the top edge of the paper. You’ve now got something like a hot dog bun, with five vertical creases. Take a breather! 10 Fold the left edge of the paper diagonally, so the bottom edge meets the second crease (as shown) and then unfold. Repeat, folding down this time, to create an X-shaped crease. 11 This part’s a little tricky, but you can do it! With the paper turned horizontally, pinch the top and bottom triangles in the X-shaped crease into one another. With those triangles pinched together, fold the left edge over and flatten. Your paper should look like the Washington monument now. 12 The last tricky part: Unfold the flaps at the top of the monument, and open it into a trapezoid. 13 Repeat Steps 10-12 on the right side to complete the “wrappers” on your candy box. 15 Now it’s time to spruce up the wrappers. Open up the left side of the wrapper, and create a center crease, as shown. Repeat on the other side. 14 16 Flip the paper over. Gently pull the flaps on either side of the middle of the paper, and open up into a square box. Pinch each side of your box to keep it upright. Roll up the gift note tightly, and place it into your candy box. For a decorative touch, fill your box halfway with (lightweight!) candy, and put the note right on top. You’re all done!
