Yield and Specific Weight by Variety
Dickens has excellent rust resistance which means you don’t have to rush
into the field immediately when there is a local outbreak.
= Brown Rust

With better disease resistance, better
grain qualities and an earlier harvest,
Dickens represents one of the best
new introductions in the winter wheat
market for many years.
A classic of

All this and a yield up with the

Yield
Dickens is one of the highest yielding feed varieties, only marginally behind KWS Santiago and
KWS Kielder, and outyielding KWS Santiago in three of the last four years and JB Diego in each
of the last four years.
On HGCA data Dickens shows little difference in yield between 1st or 2nd wheat situations,
across regions or light or heavy soils, thus showing the consistency of Dickens in a wide
variety of situations. This is confirmed in the breeder’s own trials below.

Resistance to Mildew (7), Yellow Rust (8) and Brown Rust (8) is excellent. Septoria tritici at (5)
is the same as both KWS Santiago, KWS Kielder and JB Diego. It is not Orange Wheat
Blossom Midge resistant.

Dickens also produces white flour so may be suitable for inclusion in some bread grists…

DICKENS
Dickens maturity has provided for more consistent performance than many other varieties over very
different seasons and as it is earlier than most varieties this makes it an excellent choice for growers
with large acreages as part of the variety mix.

DICKENS
In recent years the maturity of the highest yielding wheat varieties has, on average, been getting
later. And although the dry years of 2010 and 2011 favoured the later maturing varieties, 2012
favoured the earlier maturing varieties and 2013 was fairly even handed. Dickens is one of the
earliest feed wheat varieties available, not as late as KWS Santiago, KWS Kielder or Evolution.

Dickens is an (Equinox x Charger) x Defender cross. Why is this important?
Because a large percentage of the feed varieties in the UK market are crosses of Robigus or
Oakley and these varieties contain common genes that contribute to their disease resistance.
Dickens does not have Robigus or Oakley in its parentage and therefore offers different genetic
resistance which should provide better protection against any new races of Yellow or Brown Rust.
