All requests Teaching: 8:00 - 9:00 Request dancing: 9:00 - 11:00 John Burke has danced in the Bay Area since around 1980. He has been a teacher frequently at Stanford Folk Dancers, specializing in Bulgarian, Macedonian and Romanian dances that are "too complicated to simply pick up." Plovdiv Party Bus combines the talents of seasoned local musicians: Dena Bjornlie (gadulka & vocals); Lisa Ekstrom (accordion & vocals); Greg Jenkins (clarinet & vocals); and Mark Jenkins (percussion & vocals). Jerry Duke has had a long career in dance, with broad interests in many kinds of dance. He has served many different roles including dancer, choreographer, researcher and teacher. He is currently a faculty member at SF State University and teaches folk and social dancing at the University of San Francisco. Gary Breitbard & Jena Rauti have been teaching traditional French country dance music for two decades at Bay Area schools, Lark in the Morning Camp and the SF Free Folk Festival. They studied dance at Grand Bal de l'Europe, Festival de Luthiers at San Chartiers and other dance workshops in France. The Bruno Band are dance musicians and dancers who began with Morris and English Country Dance, and then expanded to include French, Spanish, and Flemish music as well. The members are: Kevin Hughes (hurdy gurdy); Calvaleigh Rasmussen (accordion); Jay Doan (fiddle); Alex Bernstein (whistles); and Jason Adajian (bagpipes, accordion & bass). Lew Smith started folk dancing in 1966 and led folk dancing at UCSB in the late '60's and at SJSU in the early '70's. Lew is also a member of the Balkan band Svirači. Melissa Miller (aka Ghanima Gaditana) has been folkdancing since childhood, and teaches and performs belly dance in the Bay Area and beyond. She also performs regularly with the band Svirači. Dance with us at First Baptist Church, 305 N. California Avenue, Palo Alto, Friday evenings from 8:00 to 11:00. We are located 4 blocks from Alma Street and 1 block "north" of Oregon Expressway, at the corner of Bryant Street. Suggested admission is $7, $10 on live music nights, and $15 for special events and workshops, but noone will be turned away for lack of funds. Students are half price and children are free.
