A recently repositioned not-for-profit Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC)
in Chicago’s western suburbs on a 20-acre campus, serving 300 persons in independent
and assisted living, a skilled nursing home and a unique dementia setting.
Executive Director (2008 – 2009)
Managed day-to-day operations of the community through 7 direct reports (Department
Heads) and a staff of 200. Direct reports included dining services, assisted
living/memory support, plant, human resources, accounting, social programming and
resident services.

Attracted, recruited and built a high performing team that is well respected in the
industry for excellence in senior services.
Achieved resident and family satisfaction scores above national benchmarked
averages.
Developed annual multi-million dollar budget; managed income and expenses.
Minimized Worker’s Compensation and unemployment losses through effective

Supported CEO, Board of Directors and architects through a 5 year repositioning period,
which included operating two building, managing physical and residential moves and
start-up. Worked closely with Marketing during fill-up. Transformed a medical model to

 Applied for and achieved assisted living licensure, skilled nursing licensure and
Medicare certification.
 Supervised the development and implementation of the initial Employee
Handbook.
 Developed and started Plymouth Place’s successful, social-model memory
support neighborhoods.

Operated a licensed intermediate care and sheltered care facility. Stabilized the nursing
workforce and evolved staff from a task-oriented model to a person-centered care model
with high resident and family satisfaction.

Improved financial health by reducing reliance on nursing agency, resulting in
$250,000 saving during FY1999, implemented a fee structure for (previously
unbilled) services provided to Sheltered Care residents, resulting in $40,000 in
revenue during the first year, and doubled the private pay census.

1980 - 1994
A world-class inner-city academic and research medical center located on Chicago’s
south side, Michael Reese Hospital and Medical Center provided inpatient and outpatient
services to diverse socioeconomic populations, and was a Level 3 Trauma Center.
Director, Surgical Services and Medical-Surgical Nursing (1991 – 1994)
Managed 9 Medical - Surgical Nursing units (300+ patients), including a 26-bed freestanding CARF-accredited rehabilitation unit. Responsible for fiscal management of
Surgical Services, including General Surgery, Neurosurgery, ENT, Orthopedics, and
Plastic Surgery and the hospital-funded physicians within those departments. Also
managed 27 direct reports (Nurse Managers, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Administrative
Assistants, clinical staff in Cast Room and Blood Flow Laboratory. Prepared capital and
operating budgets for all areas of responsibility. Member of campus-wide Investigational
Review Board, Ethics Committee, CQI Committee. Shared evening, night, week-end and
holiday Administrator on-call responsibilities.

 Established a Med-Surg Nursing Registry and implemented an every-four-hour
review of staffing to minimize reliance on agency personnel

Clinical Nurse Specialist/Enterostomal Therapy (1980 – 1991)
Responsible for a primary caseload of patients (ostomy, difficult/draining wounds,
pressure ulcers and incontinence). Worked collaboratively and served as resource and
consultant to nursing and medical staff. Managing Editor of Nursing Newsletter, a
monthly publication. Chaired the planning committee for Illinois Nurses’ week 1986 –
1992. Member of Department of Nursing Committees: Clinical Ladder, Quality
Assurance, Nursing Scholarship, Nursing Practice, Partners-in-Practice Design Team,

 Reduced hospital-acquired pressure ulcers to 4% (below published national
average) by writing and implementing house-wide protocols for pressure ulcer
prevention, and the development and management of a house-wide Skin Care
Task Force
 Reduced pressure ulcer-related Emergency Room visits by opening and managing
an outpatient Wound Clinic in collaboration with a Plastic Surgeon
 Saved hospital money by controlling use of rental pressure-reduction equipment
through use of prevention and assessment protocols
 Reduced turnover of new Med-Surg nurse graduate hires by 50% through the
conduct of a Medical-Surgical Nurse Internship Program; many of these nurses
successfully transitioned to nursing specialties within 18-24 months of hire

Authored and taught 8-hour “Creating Home” course to staff biannually 20032008. This course was developed to support a transformed dementia care
environment and was required for all staff working in the dementia care
households
