HAPPY NEW YEAR!
CONTENTS
2015 kicks off with exciting news as
we launch the Goethe-Kino, a monthly
screening of films in our auditorium.
From popular movies starring German
actors to outstanding German TV
productions shown with English subtitles,
catch a variety of films every last
Wednesday of the month!
2–15
12–13
16–17
18–21
22–23
We also continue our more specialist
film programme with works by acclaimed
directors. A highlight will be a series
of films by the late Harun Farocki.
Having seen a flurry of German art and
artists take centre stage in London’s
museums and galleries, we are pleased
that the trend continues with the famous
Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square, which
will shortly be adorned by Hans Haacke’s
Gift Horse. Adventures of the Black Square
at the Whitechapel Gallery brings together
100 works of modern masters including
Rosemarie Trockel, and we present talks,
readings and performances on the work
of ground-breaking German sculptor and
conceptual artist Reiner Ruthenbeck.

ÜBER-ICH UND DU / SUPEREGOS
WED 28 JAN 7PM
When small-time crook Nick Gutlich needs
a hide-out, a stroke of luck lands him the
job of chaperoning Curt Ledig, a renowned
elderly psychologist left alone in a remote
villa by his holidaying family. Soon Gutlich
is secretly selling Ledig’s antiquarian books
while Ledig is covertly analysing Gutlich’s
psyche. The changing dynamics of this
‘mutually beneficial’ arrangement make for
an unpredictable and charmingly erratic
comedy with two irresistible protagonists.
Followed by refreshments provided by the Embassy
of Switzerland in the UK. In collaboration with the
Austrian Cultural Forum London and the Embassy
of Switzerland in the UK.

DIE VERMESSUNG DER WELT /
MEASURING THE WORLD
WED 25 FEB 7PM
Adapted from Daniel Kehlmann’s
international bestseller, the film tells
the story of two men who set out to
explore the world; one by travelling to
South America, the other by conducting
desk research. The explorer Alexander
von Humboldt and the mathematician
Carl Friedrich Gauß meet in old age.
This film is part of Book Club at the Movies.
Germany 2011/12, colour, 119mins. With English
subtitles. Director: Detlev Buck. With Albrecht
Abraham Schuck, Florian David Fitz, Jérémy Kapone,
Vicky Krips, Karl Markovics, Katharina Thalbach,
Sunnyi Melles, Michael Maertens.

mega-cities of the world’s emerging

Johannes Naber’s sharply scripted and
brilliantly acted satire about the neocolonialist outgrowths of gobal capitalism.

DER VERLORENE ENGEL /
THE LOST ANGEL
THU 22 JAN 7PM
The film title refers to Ernst Barlach’s
sculpture The Hovering Angel, which is part
of the exhibition Germany: memories of
a nation at the British Museum. Following the
removal of Barlach’s sculpture from Güstrow
Cathedral by the Nazis in 1937, the film
shows the artist on a day of critical selfanalysis. His reflective mood is mirrored
by the film’s dreamlike style and poetic
imagery. Considered too ‘mystical’, it was
banned by GDR officials in 1966 and only
released in a shortened version in 1971.
There will be an introductory talk by curator
Clarissa von Spee (British Museum).

HARUN FAROCKI
ZWISCHEN ZWEI KRIEGEN /
BETWEEN TWO WARS
THU 19 FEB 7PM
Dedicated to the late Harun Farocki
(who died in July 2014), there will be a
number of events at Tate Modern, the
Goethe-Institut London and the Showroom.
They include films relating to the Tate
Modern exhibition Conflict, Time,
Photography and the launch of the book
Brave New Work: A Reader on Harun
Farocki’s Film ‘A New Product’.
BILDER DER WELT UND
INSCHRIFT DES KRIEGES /
IMAGES OF THE WORLD AND
THE INSCRIPTION OF WAR
FRI 30 JAN 7PM
At the centre of Farocki’s famous essay
film are aerial photographs of the German
IG Farben industrial works taken by the
Americans in 1944. That these images
had also recorded the Auschwitz
concentration camps was only found out
years later by the CIA. Farocki shows
how interpretations are conditioned by
what people want or don’t want to see,
especially in times of conflict.
This screening launches a dedicated film series
for the exhibition Confict, Time, Photography at
Tate Modern (30 Jan - 15 Feb 2015).
In collaboration with the Goethe-Institut London.

SCHNITTSTELLE / INTERFACE
& AUFSCHUB / RESPITE
TUE 17 FEB 7PM
Originally conceived for two monitors and
here shown with two overlapping images
in a single channel projection, Schnittstellte /
Interface shows Harun Farocki at the editing
table, reflecting on his method of work. Using
excerpts from his films, he comments on the
difference between film and video, working
with existing rather than new images and
proceeding from images placed side by
side to putting them into sequence.
Germany / France 1995, colour, 23mins. With English
subtitles. Director: Harun Farocki.
Images of the World and the Inscription of
War includes the analysis of photographs
taken in Auschwitz. In Respite, Farocki
focuses on footage filmed by a Jewish
prisoner in Westbork, Netherlands, a transit
camp for Jews from where they were
transported to the death camps. While
the film is silent, Farocki inserts written
comments and uses repetition and
freezeframes to facilitate a close reading
of the images.
Germany / Netherlands 2007, b/w, video, 40mins.
Silent. Director: Harun Farocki.
In his first full length feature Harun Farocki
inspects the idea of rationalisation by
looking at Germany’s blast furnace industry
between 1917 and 1933. He reconstructs
how the idea was put into practice, became
successful and then failed, eventually
leading to collaboration between the
industry and the National Socialist regime.
It is an analysis of the economic causes of
fascism, which, Farocki said, he pushed to
the extreme to test the limits of his method.
West Germany 1978, b/w, 85mins. With English
subtitles. Director: Harun Farocki.
STILLEBEN / STILL LIFE
MON 23 FEB 7PM
The film analyses 17th century Dutch and
Flemish paintings to explore how objects
have developed into consumer products.
The documentary sections of Still Life,
which observe how products are
photographed for advertising, still show
people carrying out skilled work, while
Farocki’s more recent film A New Product
(2012), screening at the Showroom (see p.6)
focuses on people whose job it is to talk
about work.

colour, 58mins. With English subtitles. Director:

Himmler before 92 SS generals on 4 October

LAGOS – NOTES OF A CITY
THU 5 MARCH 7PM
Lagos comes to life in all its colour and
contradictions in this unimposing,
beautifully shot documentary. Moving
between panoramic views of the city’s
infrastructure and its buzzing streets, the
film brings us close to six of the over 17
million inhabitants, including a single
mother who is HIV-positive and a well-off
businessman who has his own view of
Nigeria’s rapidly growing economy.
Germany 2009 – 2011, colour, 98mins. In English.
Director: Jan Wenkel.
DramaConsult are two Nigerian business
consultants helping a shoe manufacturer,
an auto parts dealer and a real estate
developer from Lagos to set up business
links with Germany. Together they travel
to Germany to meet potential business
partners. It is a real project especially
created for this film that aims to break
through the standard north-south trajectory
of the global economy.

Huillet and Jean-Marie Straub have, since
the 1960s, led an ongoing critical debate

often through the use of literary and
philosophical texts. After the death of
Danièle Huillet in October 2006, Jean-Marie

selection of which will be shown across

As part of SKULPTUR: Contemporary

Norway and Sweden, the Royal British
Society of Sculptors presents immersive
video installations in collaboration with
the Goethe-Institut London. Icelandic artist
Sigurður Guðjónsson interrogates the
interplay of image, sound and space, while
Mariken Kramer (Norway) explores the
‘creation of division’ and scrutinises
complex questions of inclusion in
contemporary society.
Jan St. Werner is one half of the pioneering
German electronic music duo Mouse on
Mars. Based on one of Werner’s short
poems, omöohhhno pahtuuontudonthose
creates an arc of suspense consisting of
several individual compositions oscillating
between dissolution and rigour. Featuring
musical contributions by Tilman Kanitz,
Thomas Mahmoud and Michael Rauter,
Jan St. Werner will perform this excursion
into the complex language of postinterdisciplinarity as abstract theatre.
Diedrich Diederichsen is an author, music
journalist, cultural critic, and professor at
the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. He is
one of Germany’s most renowned intellectual
writers at the intersection of the arts, politics,
and pop culture. A former editor-in-chief of

Über-Pop-Musik proposes ‘pop’ as an aesthetic
category, one constructed by the audience.

HANS HAACKE: GIFT HORSE
ON THE FOURTH PLINTH
THU 5 MAR 2015 – AUTUMN 2016
In March, Hans Haacke’s Gift Horse will be
installed on the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar
Square. In place of the statue of William IV
astride a horse – as was originally planned
for the empty plinth – Haacke proposed a
skeleton of a strutting horse. Tied to its
front leg is an electronic ribbon which
displays live data from the London Stock
Exchange, completing the link between
power, money and history. The piece
attempts to make a number of hidden
substructures visible – tied up with a bow
as a gift to all.
Gift Horse has been commissioned by the Mayor of
London as part of the Fourth Plinth Commissioning
Programme and will be the tenth sculpture to be
unveiled on Trafalgar Square’s Fourth Plinth.

Gift Horse on the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar

on the politics of its site and continues
Hans Haacke’s critical engagement with
British culture, which he began with A

British Leyland’s links with apartheid in
South Africa.
This symposium, co-organised by Jon Bird

A NEW YEAR IS A GOOD TIME
TO START PLANNING FOR
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT.
The Goethe-Institut London kicks off with
Jung Sein in Deutschland, a professional
development day for German teachers
in secondary schools. The workshop offers
recent, authentic material for use in the
classroom, including short films, songs and
music clips. The day also offers a great
networking opportunity to exchange ideas
and projects with other German teachers.
We are also very pleased to present our
Mathematik zum Anfassen exhibition at the
Global Languages Immersion Centre (GLIC)
in Gloucester. Teachers will find the
exhibition very useful for their students
in combining aspects both from CLIL and
STEM teaching in a truly high tech venue.
