Year Two Impact Report of the Quality Enhancement Plan “A Plan to Enhance Student Computer Literacy” Title and Brief Description of the QEP as Initially Presented: Meridian Community College (MCC) is committed to the success of its students, including those who enter the college lacking the appropriate technological skills to successfully complete their education at Meridian Community College, transfer to a four-‐year institution, or enter the workforce. Entitled MCC: Making the Computer Connection, the QEP outlines the process used by MCC to serve the needs of students and meet the intended student learning outcomes of the QEP. Initial Goals: The QEP is consistent with the college’s mission and strategic plan and provides a framework for addressing goals and assessing outcomes through both direct and indirect measures. (1) MCC will create new curricula, practices, and procedures to ensure that a manageable, sustainable, and successful program for developing student technological literacy is in place by 2017. (2) MCC graduates will have the conceptual knowledge and skills to use technology effectively to accomplish their academic and professional goals. Intended Outcomes: (1) Students will demonstrate knowledge of basic computer operations and terminology. (2) Students will demonstrate knowledge of the structure and uses of the Internet, including concepts and terms, security, browsing, settings, navigation, searching and search engines, electronic mail, and operations for Eaglenet and Canvas. (3) Students will demonstrate proficiency in word processing including being able to open, close, save, and edit files in word processing; inserting, selecting, editing, duplicating, searching and replacing information; and formatting tests, paragraphs, and documents. Year Two of Implementation As intended, the Pilot Year provided the College with an opportunity to assess the effectiveness of its QEP implementation plan, discuss the process, and decide upon changes to be made for Year Two of implementation. The Implementation and Monitoring Committee produced an instrument which more precisely tests the skills in which we are interested. This test was piloted in the spring of 2013, and pretest results of the new assessment clearly proved that our cut off score was far too low (see below). The original cut-‐off score of 60% used for the Accuplacer Computer Skills Assessment was raised to 75% for assessment to be used in the fall of 2013. Longer hours were also implemented in the fall of 2013 as the designated lab (The Computer Connection Lab) became fully operational and a full-‐time QEP lab facilitator was hired. One glaring problem is the failure of students who need remediation to go through the remediation process. Pretests thus far prove that about half of the students tested need remediation, but only approximately half of those actually participate in the remediation course and posttest. However, those students who took part in the remediation course show an average gain of over five points on posttest scores. To address the problem of students not remediating, the LLS instructors will set a deadline for taking the pretest, with failure to take the pretest resulting in a failing test grade in LLS 1423. Additionally, for those who do take the pretest, they will receive a pass/fail grade as a test grade in LLS 1423: 75% or above is a passing grade; below 75% is a Webb, Cathy 6/2/14 9:39 AM Formatted: Indent: First line: 0.24" failing grade. All students who remediate will be allowed to count the posttest as their pass/fail test grade. During the spring of 2014, 216 individual students visited Webb, Cathy 6/2/14 9:40 AM Formatted: Right: -0.5" the Computer Connection Lab exclusive of the 176 students who were enrolled in the LLS 1423 classes. In addition, 151 nursing students heard about the Computer Connection Lab and its offerings during a presentation by the QEP facilitator. Implementing the QEP has been a learning process. However, we have benefited from our “lessons,” and the IMC will continue in its efforts to equip students with the appropriate technological skills.
