2013-14 Season M&Y Newsletter No.28 Wed 10th April U9 Tourists - ‘Alien Invasion of Wiltshire Tour’ It was eerily quiet at KGV last Sunday with the bulk of minis away as tourists on their ‘Alien Invasion of Wiltshire Tour’. What goes on tour stays on tour! But the word is, this was another fun packed and outstanding success and the U9’s, pictured above, were quickest off the mark in submitting their tour report. Back at KGV, in our only home game last week, saw the U17&U18 Academy side beat Barnet 37-35 in very close and hard fought league fixture. The U13A’s and U13B’s both travelled over to Ampthill for a friendly fixture. Full match reports later on in the newsletter. With the time fast running out there are still a bunch of games to be played, which are certainly proving to be a real challenge, with mid-week floodlit games and hiring independent venues all in the mix. Initiatives are also currently being undertaken for the re-establishment of an U14 (next season U15) squad. LV= Weekend at HRFC 26th–27th April WANTED There is no training for the Minis at KGV on Easter Sunday (20th April) The U15’s leave for their ‘Zombie Apocalypse’ Holland tour on Friday 18th–22nd April. There is a special mention for Academy players Ruiri Shanahan who got his 25th senior cap last Saturday, not bad for a senior at 17 years old and also for Harry Chater who got the 1st team try. So, from September 2014 we aim to have the bar open from 09:30 to sell hot foods and snacks and generally improve what we are offering our members. This will require volunteer to help make this happen. There was strong defensive work from the start, with Declan leading the way. Ferocious running from Luca, Thomas, and Oliver yielded a good try count. Oscar had an impressive all-round game. Match 2: An excellent performance by the Klingons. The almost unstoppable Daniel caused the hosts all sorts of problems in attack and defence. Theo and Joe tackled hard and ran fast. Gregor played his Fly-Half role very well. William L began his impressive tour with good positioning and determined defence. Match 3: Resolute defence was the name of this game. Really good tackling from all the boys. Some very 3kilful double-tackles on show! Thomas and Luca stood out on that front. A nice spread of try scorers rounded off a great team performance. Match 4: Hitchin The boys had fire in their bellies by now: although Chippenham got four tries, Hitchin defence was solid and the attack was top notch. Harry stepped up and showed his strength in this game. Player of the match was probably William, who held his position and did not let anyone pass him! UNDER 9 – DAY 2 Fixture: Alien Invasion of Wiltshire Tour – Friday 4th – Monday 7th April 2014 Tourists: Declan B, Oscar N-T, Luca J, William L, Thomas K, Oliver S, Theo T, Joe T, Ben W, Daniel B, Harry M-C, Gregor S Team: Hitchin Space Invaders Result: Match 1 Match 2 Hitchin Space Invaders 5-3 Bassett Hitchin Space Invaders 6-2 Bassett TOUR MATCH REPORTS Day 2: Hitchin RFC v Royal Wooton Bassett RFC All the boys were mixed up for the second day’s rugby. The team were renamed the Space Invaders. Match 1: Oliver, Daniel, Luca and Thomas continued the direct approach by charging into the Bassett defence: ouch! Fearsome tackles were rife. Bassett had some strong defenders too. We all felt the Earth shake a bit under some of the contact going on. Declan was the Hitchin Hero, playing with a huge black eye and still tackling and scoring tries! William was great again. Gregor showed his growing maturity with good decision making and positioning. Ben made a great try-saving tackle in the second half. Match 2: More fantastic running play from the visitors. Dogged defence by Bassett at the start could not stop a number of excellent tries coming through. The boys kept their shape very well in this match (the message is getting through – finally!). Moment of the match might have been a simple pass: Theo was running in for a try, but he saw Joe T in close support and passed the ball on. That’s just the sort of rugby that we all love. All the rugby was played in the best traditions of Hitchin. The boys were tough but fair; they were gracious victors and excellent ambassadors. Please join us for this great event – members and non-members welcome.
